Just back from Orlando. S&W booth very exciting. New products seen: Models 14, 17, 18, 42 (no lock), 57, 58, 9mm 1911, 45 1911 with Commander barrel on officer's frame, and 3 inch 45 1911 on officer's frame, a couple of new Nightguards, M&P 15-22 (dedicated 22 LR M4 type rifle with polymer upper and lower), various other M&P15 rifles, M&P pistols with thumb safeties in full size and compact.

There is also a J frame 3 inch with ported barrel for the .327 Mag cartridge.

I am probably missing something as I am tired, but I think that covers most of it at S&W.

Other SHOT Show items of interest:

Rumors were flying that (1) Beretta bought Glock - NOT TRUE and (2) Cerberus Capital Management bought S&W - also NOT TRUE.

S&W M&Ps in 9, 40 and 45 in all frame sizes and barrel lengths were just approved for individual purchase by DEA agents after very rigorous testing.

Beretta was bragging about a new 450,000 unit pistol order from the army for M9 pistols, but I have the impression that it is through the Tank and Armaments command for procurement for other countries, but not sure about that.

Browning: no new centerfire pistols.

Colt: New 1911 stainless with picatinny rail, Delta Elite shown as new item again this year, basically the same line up as in recent years, although they had an entirely new booth with lots of flat screen TVs with fancy computer simulations and other info playing.

CZ: New versions of the CZ75 called SP01 and SP01 Phantom holding 19 rounds, with decocker or safety. CZ97 .45 new option of decocker in addition to thumb safety model. New P07 duty model with Omega trigger system which can be changed by end user from decocker to thumb safety model without gunsmith. Alice Poluchova, President in booth greeting people, friendly as ever and looking very nice indeed. Referred to by someone in an article about her bear hunt as the "Czech Chick." She is really cool and the only lady pres of a gun company that I know of.

Detonics: There with its line of 1911s, including the old combat master mini 45.

EAA: I have no idea if they had new stuff as I was too busy looking at Heather, the long legged blonde from their ads who was signing autographs. Much thinner in person than she looks in pictures. Very charming and nice person.

FN: Says its new SCAR 16 will not be available to anyone except stocking dealers who purchase a "stocking dealer package of guns" at about $8,000.00 cost. SCAR 17 in .308 is still a year away. FNP 45 in USG version (allows cocked and locked and decocking on same lever). All FNs come with three mags. The 45 with one 15 round mag and two 14 round mags if you get the shooters pack.

Glock: Nothing new except new RTF pistol - a Model 22 with a new "Rough Textured Frame" which has different slide serrations. I found the new frame texture too sharp, but then again, I might have tender hands.

HK: No new pistols. New piston driven ARs in 5.56 and 7.62 still a year away.

Para USA: US plant now open, new GI Expert, basic GI .45 with just a few improvements, and a new AR rifle, with different operating system that allows folding and telescoping stock.

Ruger: Shows its new polymer frame 5 shot revolver in 38 +P. DAO with concealed hammer, with a real radical look. All Model 77 Mark II hunting rifles pretty much replaced by Hawkeye Rifles with similar configurations to the ones they replaced. Mini 14s with flash suppressors and high cap mags are now standard and offered to commercial market.

SIG: Showing its new "Colt Mustang" in .380 (yeah, I said Colt Mustang - it is a little Colt Mustang - 1911 type - but with slide cuts and shape to match the SIG look in the SIG 1911s). Called SIG 238, I think. SIG also ahd the 45 versions of the new 250, but, like all 250s, the trigger pull is long and heavy and the gun has a wide slide and is not conducive to any sort of real concealed carry.

Taurus: As usual, lots of stuff shown in non-working prototypes that will never see the light of day. I do not buy Taurus products.

Vltor (the people who make stocks and accessories for ARs) were showing prototypes of their re-do of the Bren Ten. It goes under the name Fortis and will use EAA Witness 15 round 10mm magazines. It is to be offered in 45 also. Samples looked good, but delivery seems to be months away.

Walther: New PK380, same look as P22 but in .380.

Winchester: Model 70s are back with Controlled round feed, built at FN's plant. Model 94s later this year or early next year.

Savage: New AccuStock 3D aluminum full length bedding for most of its rifles to go along with accutrigger introduced a couple years ago.

Remington: New 887 polymer wrapped shotgun with modern look, supposedly impervious to all moisture and corrosion, but not very user friendly design. Ambi bolt release is located so that you smash your finger when you rack the slide while holding the bolt release. Don't ask how I know that! New rifle ammo called .30 AR for use in AR length magazines. Seems like something the military should look into as it works in the 5.56 length magazine and action of the standard AR/M16/M4 platform.

With ammo prices gone crazy, the latest craze is 22 versions of "assault rifles." Very realistic versions of the HK MP5, Colt M4 (by Umarex, licensed by Colt), and the S&W M&P15/M4 were shown.

The grip on the Model 57, .41 Mag looks thinner. Especially in the speed loader area as well as the bottom of the grip. Am I right or just seeing things? It might be a better after market grip for my Model 657.

..you are not seeing things..it is much slimmer. The grip on the "new" M58 is also slimmer. Would have been nice if they had "re-issued" PC Magnas but it was not to be.

The new M58 looks just like the old one except for the "hole" in the side.

I don't recall the model number they are using but the .327 Federal is going to be housed in the same body as the M60-15 3" full underlug with adjustable sights. This will make a great lower recoiling trail gun but it is too bad S&W also didn't bring the gun out in a 2" Centenial version also...

As soon as my trip to the show is paid off I'm having my dealer order one of the M357 Night Guards before they get discontinued like the 357 Airlite did...

Benelli USA: having the most stupid display of the show...their new Vinci.

Actually, it was hype, without a gun displayed.

Just some college age kids in suits with black sunglasses around a funky looking case, (that I think would be impossible to stack) trying to look like high-security.

If it was something so great, why didn't they just announce it?!?!

Uberti (through various US importers): The new Colt Burgess rifle...lever action version of the Lightning rifle. I have to have one.

Traditions Firearms: A couple of new scale version kits of cannons from the War of Northern Aggression, and some new black powder revolvers which are replicas of some historical handguns attributed to men like Jesse James, etc.,- including an silver-plated 1851 Navy with a steel frame! (I want one of these too )

Taurus: a small frame version of the Judge, which is on a stretched model 85 frame with a semi-bobbed hammer. It's about half the size of my current Judge, and the one that interests me is the alloy-frame with the titanium cylinder.

They also had out a neat little .380, and although I'm not particularly into that caliber, their titanium one peeks my interest also. I waited and didn't buy a Ruger- so perhaps I'll see how this little piece does and get one of them.

S&W: I really like the 58, and the engraved stuff that was displayed, but they are going crazy on their prices.

Federal: They had some neat stuff, like their new .410 buckshot with the extra pellet...but I commented on their high prices, which didn't seem to get a rouse out of poor gentlemen manning their booth- their people were friendly, and so was I, but they looked beat- so I was nice and even offered to get those guys a drink.

I didn't bother stopping at any "tacticool" displays- they don't interest me- at least I admit I'm slanted.

The sandwiches were too much, parking was too high, and I even saw some people sporting badges with "lawn service" and "Avon" on them. One guy was wanting to buy a gun off a display and giving the manufacturer a hard time because he didn't realize that this wasn't a gun show. Go figure.

Duke: I know it sounds crazy, but SHOT has rules against cameras if you are not press, and the rule is violated more than it is enforced, but I just was not interested in carrying alot of catalogs and a camera!

Panama: I did not include the SF 20 and 29 as those were technically not new introductions, both having been introduced earlier in 2008 in conjunction with another trade show. But, you are correct, this is the first SHOT Show for those two models.

Yes. One of the guys there said the polymer upper and lowers were being done by the same subcontractor that makes M&P pistol frames. In any event, it is called M&P15-22 or something like that, and at a distance is looks exactly like an M4. Only when you get up close do you realize the ejction port is not quite "right" and the magazine, although resembling a 30 round AR mag is also not quite "right." Then the lights go on and you realize what you are seeing! Very cool. It is said to have a very favorable price point.

That will get ordered tomorrow. So far this shot show has cost me three guns. In addition to this one, a PC 327 federal and the new Ruger LCR. Thanks!

Incidentally what is the correct name for the 327? Is it the 327 Federal or the 327 Magnum? I've seen it both ways.

I never would have mistreated any revolver as much as I did that Taurus, but it was such a piece of junk, I just could not resist. The sights would not hold their zero even before I started throwing it to the next shooting station (unloaded of course). Amazingly, it was not the first and was not the last Taurus as I wanted to give them another chance. unfortunately, every single "chance" I gave Taurus resulted in money poorly spent and a gun that was nothing more than a really bad "fishing weight." And, as you know, every one was brand new straight from a distributor. I know some have had good luck with Taurus and I wish them all the best, but my experience with Taurus, including a brand new one last year, has been uniformly negative, with each one not working as it came brand new out of the box straight from a distributor. A Taurus is really a gun for people who don't value their lives very highly, at least in my experience!

I have two Taurus revolvers and a friend has one of their semi-automatics. All three work just fine BUT that's just luck. Most I've been around were, well, junk!

I also spent the weekend there. The show seemed very different this year. While previous posters comments are accurate, the crowd seemed way down in numbers, no problems navigating the aisles. By noon Sunday, many booths were packing up. I purchased the remains of one, optics, shelves, everything !! I was most disturbed by the lack of knowledge and sales skills of several vendors. More than once I walked in and out of booths without being approached by an attendee ( yes, I showered ). Often they never looked up from their table, one woman was knitting, a man was on his computer, in full view of attendees, trying to score a date for the night, The State of Idaho rep was seated in his stool, sound asleep !!!! Even many of the large companies had nice displays, but were staffed by outsource reps that were there to collect info, so sales guys could contact you after the show.....


OK, enough of the critique...

HIGH POINTS - I spent a good 20-30 minutes with a guy I did not expect to be there, Tommy Milner, CEO of Remington !! He is an absolutely wonderful, candid and down to earth individual.
Made the trip worthwhile on its own !!

Was in the S&W booth, looking at a very nice, brand new ( although no internal lock ) engraved revolver ( model 40 I believe ) that was on a podium in an open, glass topped presentation case. A man came up, asked if I would like to hold it. He introduced himself ( for the life of me I cannot remember his name - something like Huntington ?? ). He is some big gun journalist I guess, the gun was just being presented to him by S&W. Came home with lots of info and a load of new books also.

The technical name is .327 Federal Magnum, but it is most often going to be called '.327 Magnum', just as one would normally call a .44 Remington Magnum just '.44 Magnum'.

Not a Smith, but I thought it interesting that the Charter Rimless Revolver did NOT show up. Something about "patent papers." Riiight.

They did have a picture big enough to show the piano wire around the star, presumably shaped to snap into the extractor grooves. Ruger tried such a deal with the 9mm Speed Six but reverted to half moon clips on the production guns.
