Thumbs up My SW9VE Review

My SW9VE Review:

Just a little background first: I am an experienced shooter & gun owner of 40 years. I consider myself a revolver person. I have shot revolvers exclusively for the past several years, until today.

My daughter wanted a 9MM polymer gun. We looked at several of the most popular ones, and chose the sigma because of its superb ergonomics. Price was also a consideration because of college expenses. I thought about purchasing this gun before, but was a little leery after reading so many negative reviews. Finally, I came across the best article ever written on the gun, which was posted in the blue forum some time ago. This article put it all in perspective for me, and pushed me over the edge. I decided to give the sigma a try. I paid $319 - $50 for the gun.

This review is based on my opinion on the design and function of this gun, and not a copy of the many opinions that I’ve read both good and bad. I respect the opinions of others, and hopefully will receive the same courtesy.

I familiarized myself with the gun by reading the manual, disassembling, cleaning, lube and reassembling several times. I also practiced dry fire for a couple of weeks at home. I asked a few questions from a knowledgeable friend or two who graciously gave me some good tips on the gun.

First, I’ll cover the ergonomics: In my hand, this is one of the most comfortable guns that I have ever held. The size and weight of the gun seem perfect to me. The magazine release is perfectly located and very easy to use; same with the slide stop. The 3 dot sights are fine; I was accustomed to these back in my auto days. Best of all, the sigma is a natural pointer in my hand. It feels like an extension of my arm. As far as polymer guns go, I think it is a good looking gun, also.

Next, the trigger design: I was fully aware that I was getting a DAO trigger system. I didn’t expect it to feel like a SA trigger at all. I have extensive experience with DA revolvers. I believe this design is not only safe to carry, but ideal for a home defense gun. This is my intended purpose for the gun. I think that an accidental discharge is highly unlikely. I can’t speak to the earlier sigma designs, but the trigger on my 9VE pulls back smoothly all the way. There is no grit. Getting use to the DA pull was easy. I quickly developed a good feel on when it was going to light off.

Off to the outdoor range: It was sunny, cool and extremely windy this morning in San Antone. I chose a 7 yard target to get in my comfort zone with this new gun. Remember, it’s been several years since my last auto. Unfortunately, my daughter wasn’t able to go today; but she’s stocking up on ammo, and will go soon.

I sent over 200 rounds down range; mostly Remington ShurShot 115 GR and a box of Golden Sabres. The felt recoil was mild for a 9mm, again a tribute to the comfortable design of the gun. The Golden Sabres did have more snap than the ShurShots did. The gun was easy to hold on target and POA/POI met or exceeded my expectations. There were no stovepipes or failures to feed. The gun shot very well indeed. It didn’t take long to get comfy at all. I quickly remembered the fun I had in the 90’s shooting 9mm. You can sure throw money quickly with two, 16 round magazines. Loading them was as I expected. The 16th round was tough to get in; it got a little easier as I got use to the loading process.

I did experience one minor quirk: On two occasions, the slide did not stay back after the last shot. Both times, it was with the same magazine. I talked to the range master, who I have a lot of respect for, to get his opinion. We looked things over and saw nothing wrong. He thought it might be a minor magazine break in issue, and thinks it will go away. I’d like to hear from you sigma owners on this subject. Please chime in. I have not taken the magazine down to clean or lube. It is new, remember.

Other than that my experience on this first trip was totally awesome. The gun is easy and fun to shoot. For a gun that’s not supposed to be a “range gun”, I certainly had a great time hitting the target, and can’t wait to go again.

My plan for the trigger: My plan is to take the sigma to the range and pull the trigger as many times as I possibly can, for years to come!

Best wishes to all,
Lee

But, but, but all the internet commandos say that Sigmas suck!

Thanks for your report. I recently put a Sigma 9VE on layaway because I wanted to experience for myself how the gun was, not base my opinion on internet rumors from people who have never owned or shot one. I've had personal bad experience with the 1st generation .40 S&W version, but I've heard mostly good about the current 9VE, so I wanted to see for myself. I can't wait to pick the gun up.

Great review!

Thanks

I have not had any issues like you described with the slide not staying open by the way. It does sound like a break in issue.

I am with you. My experience with the Sigma SW9VE has been totally positive.

Thanks guys!

I just cleaned and lubed the gun. I tried just a tiiiny drop of oil on the inside of the mag walls; I'll keep you all posted.

Yes indeed, this gun is a blast to shoot. There is simply, no trigger issue at all. At this point, I'm very excitied about the gun!

Lee,
I to just purchased the SW9VE as a home defence weapon. I took it to the range yesterday for the first time and after about 100 rounds put down range I am pleased. The trigger was nothing like I expected. I expected it to be very gritty and hard to pull, but after about the first 10 shots it was very pleaseing to know when to expect it to fire. I do have one concern. It seams that when the action is closed you can actually move the barrel (top portion) and I was wondering how this would impact a laser since it is mounted on the lower polimer portion and will be seperate from the action area. My range is a dirt birm about 20 feet high that is located in my hunting lease. No targets were used as I was just getting a feel for the gun. It seems that when I have the sight dots ligned up the shots are hitting about 3 inches lower at 7 to 8 yards. There is no elivation adjustment so I guess you are suppose to compinsate for this on your own. I purchased this gun at a local gun show and I also recieved a $50 rebate for a total price after rebate on $249. This is IMO a very well built gun, extreemly well ballanced and the grip as you said is one of the best I have ever help. For all those 9VE bashers that have never owned and are going by the word of mouth from other non-owners, go buy one yourself and I bet your oppinion will change. Happy shooting.

Rodney, congratulations on your purchase!

I don't have any experience with lasers, so I can't help there. I'm sure we have many members that do; and they will be happy to answer your question.

As far as the sights go, I found mine pretty much on the mark. I did notice that if I pulled the gun down ever so slightly, it did hit a bit low. I know that I will need plenty of practice to get really good with it. Also, as with any gun, I would say to experiment with different types, brands and weights of ammo. That's what I plan to do.

Happy shooting,

Lee

Leejack -

Nice work on the review. I have owned mine since Nov. of 09 and put about 300-400 rounds and have come to many of the same conclusions as you have.

This is my first hand gun so the trigger isn't an issue OTHER then realizing it was the cause of shooting low (Note HUNTER1958). The more I focused on slow squeeze the more "on" the target I am at 25 yds. Its a blast to shoot.

I found failure to load (jams) when I was "limp wristing". I was nervous I got a lemon but the truth is, once you firm up that grip you are good to go...

...that said...I do have an issue that you seem to have as well I would love some input on:

At the end of my clip my slide does not open? I have had this happen a couple times. Not sure if its one of my 2 magizines or something else.

Is there a way to clean and lube a clip that is included? Anyone have a suggestion? Is this also the result of limp wristing?

Thoughts anyone?

Thx!

Hi guys, this is my first gun in over 10 years. I took my 14 year old son the first time out and we were both able to hit in the red from about 15 yards. My second time I took my 18 year old daughter who had never shot a gun before and she hit the red on her first shot! I love this gun!

Hi, all

I just finished cleaning my SW40VE tonite, so I thought this thread was timely.
I have owned mine long enough I bought it before the AWB sunsetted (10 years old?), and it has always been perfectly reliable.
I said I just finished cleaning it, I should add for the first time in 2 years or so. I have just been shooting and lubing it, the carbon was rock hard inside the slide, and it was running like a charm when I fired it last.
These are good guns, I only wish mine had a black slide.
The worst thing about these guns? You will never get your money back out of it, so you better plan on keeping it.
The best thing is, you can buy a Sigma, holster, etc, and still be under the price of any other quality auto.

Andy

P.S. Don't put oil in the magazines. Disassemble the magazines and make sure they are clean, there may be some protectant oil/grease inside the magazines from the factory. Oil or grease in the mags will just attract dirt.

same problem here with the slide not staying back after the last round is fired. Have sent 300 rounds through it and I keep getting the same problem. IMHO break in is not the solution

Thumbs up

Lee,
Shooting up all the kitchen appliances paid off, huh?
Nice write-up!
I have no mag issues with my .40. Don't oil them. Some folks use silicone. I've not had the occasion yet to take mine apart.
You're right about burning up the ammo and such with the mag. capacity as it is.
I got a mag loading tool for mine, but didn't get a Uplula(spelling). A lot of good reports on the Uplula. I'll get one eventually as well as a Fobus, HK 1, paddleback holster.

Charlie, I'm going to attempt another range trip shortly, I'll keep you posted. I will mark the mags so I can monitor this. I see that 9miliman has this issue also. If it doesn't quickly go away I'll call Smith to see what they say. Maybe they'll send me a new mag.

I stocked up on some Winchester White Box last night. I called 7 places before I found one that had any 9mm in stock.

Seems like ammo is getting hard to find for some reason... go figure. However I have found that at Sportsmansguide.com and cheaperthandirt.com they have plenty on hand if you don't mind paying a little extra for shipping. I shot the winchester white box in mine at the range (dirt birm) and had no FTF or FTE and both my magazines hold the slide open after the last round is fired. I tried taking it slower when shooting and the dots seem to hold true on the target as well so thanks for that advice. I will be putting a laser on later just to see how the accuracy is with the barrel and slide moving just a bit up front. I am curious just to see if this will be an accuracy problem or not, no big issue for now. Happy shooting and be safe.

Thanks Hunter!

I'll bet that the little movement up front doesn't mean anything.

Here's an old trick to practice, it's been posted many times before.

Put a dime or a penny on top the slide and practice some very focused shots at home (unloaded, of course). Keep the coin from moving. It seems to help develop a steady hand. It's fun too!

Thanks so much for all your help, Erich!

I may be able to go to the range this afternoon. I want to keep a close eye on these 2 magazines.

Remember amigo, the best TexMex food in Texas is on me if you ever get to SA!

Remember. The pistol gets lighter every time you shoot from a full mag. This is especially true with my .40. Will less weight affect accuracy? I think so for rapid fire drills. You have to apply a little more concentration to follow up shots.

Thanks for the tip Charlie!

Yep, they did have .40. Just about everybody was out of 9mm.

I found a WalMart that had just got stocked. $20.97 for a box of 100 9 mm. I picked up 3 boxes.

Look for my post this afternoon. I'm going back for some more shootin!

Went back for another round today with my daughter. She loves the gun!

100 rounds WWB, 50 rounds Rem green box.

The mags behaved just fine.

In regards to the slide not staying back after the last round. I had the same problem with one of my magazines. When I examined it I found that the follower still had some flashing from the moulding process. This prevented the follower from moving as far up toward the top of the magazine (compared to my other magazines). I removed the follower from the magazine and rubbed it on a piece of sandpaper following the tapered contour of the follower. I went slow and reassembled the magazine several times untill the follower extended as far up in the magazine body as the others. When it matched the others I put it in the gun, pulled the slide back, and insured it would lock the slide when empty. It is now my main magazine and works fine.

I have the SW9VE and I couldn't be happier. I also have a glock 17 and to be honest, my S & W feels better and shoots just as good as my glock. I use my S&W for my carry gun. Great gun.

Thanks for the tip on the magazine, Tslepebull!

I smoothed it out and it's perfect.

I've put about 500 rounds through it (different types of ammo) and it is indeed perfect! It just keeps getting sweeter! Runs like a well oiled sewing machine. No failures, just keeps going bang!

I love the sigma.

Default My 2 cents on the Sigma series

I own a few older guns and had been carrying a 9mm Norinco which has proven to be extremely accurate at the range but suffers from an occasional blocking of the hammer just short of the firirng pin(unacceptable in a defense situation) so I started looking for the ideal carry gun. I've always been a fan of S&W and being limited in funds I started researching the Sigma Series. After reading hundreds of reviews about the only complaint I saw from people who actually owned and shot these guns was that some had an issue with the length and weight of the trigger pull. The thought of this did bother me some because my other autos are SA with very light triggers and even though I do pretty well with my revolver I find myself cocking the hammer back when I want to be sure to hit the bullseye. I decided at that point to keep my mind open to other guns as well. A couple friends let me shoot their Glocks. The triggers on those felt good but still didn't shoot as accurately as my old Norinco. Also I could see scenarios with the light trigger and no external safety. In a comfortable soft shell concealment holster if you're involved in a scuffle with someone grabbing at you it wouldn't be hard for a finger to inadvertantly find it's way into the trigger guard and that would cause a Glock to fire. Or if you set it on the table and the cat stepped on it and his paw went inside the trigger guard you're gonna have a hole hopefully just in the wall and a very scared cat. I wasn't sure what I wanted until yesterday at a gunshow when I saw a brand new SW9VE with two 16 round mags on display. I asked the dealer to cut the tie because I just had to feel this trigger for myself. I racked the slide, took aim at a light switch and squeezed the trigger. After doing this several times I realized I was able to keep the sights on target throughout. I bought it and went right to the range. At first I was pulling slightly off aim but by the end of the first mag I was shooting tight groups in the center of the target so I ran a new target out to 50 feet and obliterated the bullseye. I ran 200 rounds of Independance 115 gr FMJ throught it flawlessly and I'm very happy that I bought this gun. The trigger is long and heavy but very smooth and if you aim and shoot instead of trying to feel for the sear break you should be quite pleased. At least I am. The weight and feel of the gun is unrivaled in my oppinion. The trigger is light enough to manage with just a little practice and just heavy enough to prevent accidental firings. Great job S&W. I'll be carrying this gun for a long time.

Welcome to the forum, friend!

Nice reply. I've been shooting mine quite a bit. I definately love this gun.

Runs like a Timex watch or a Singer sewing machine!

Thanks for the welcome leejack.

I love this gun. It was the first one I considered when I started looking for a new one. I'm glad I came back around to it. I can hardly wait to get back to the range next weekend.

Question; is your name short for stratocaster?

Yeah it is short for stratocaster but don't read too much into it. I never got any good on the guitar and haven't tried to play in 20 years. I wanted to use my name but it was already taken.

Default a natural

It is interesting to read all of the posts that feel that Ruger makes a great product, but that the P95 just felt huge in the hand. I felt the same way, although I almost bought one. I went for the 9VE because it felt so great in the hand. I said this on another thread, but it bears repeating that the more I visit this site, the more I like my 9VE! I want a black one now...

Glad to hear all the good reviews. I bought mine about a week ago, but haven't had time to get to the range. Hopefully Tuesday or Wednesday I will make it out.

The only oddity of the Sigma that I got from the guys at the range is the disconector (this caused the gun not to be approved by the Dept.) On contact shots, most semi's if you push the slide back and the disconector engages, then pull the trigger nothing happens . You then can push the slide forward and the pull the trigger and it will fire. On the Sigma if the disconecter engages and you pull the trigger it De-cocks. So to fire you have to rack the slide to fire. Just something to keep in mind.

On the sigma what happens is that the striker is still allowed to be released, but since the slide and barrel has begun to unlock the firing pin safety is engaged thus not allowing the firing pin to strike the primer.

This happens on most glock type striker designs.

Default gunsmithing

WildCard ZX6R, I find this facinating. I would like to operate a gunsmithing shop when I retire (light IS at the end of the tunnel) and would like to know more concerning this. Any good leads?

More concerning the operation of firearms ? Couldn't really help you there. I have learned from simply taking things apart and observing how they work.

Default taking things apart

Well, that is how I have been doing it so far. I had not done this yet. These forums have been my sources for a lot of info like this...

Made it back to the range and put 200 more rounds through my new SW9VE. This gun is so sweet. Not even a hint of any reliability issues. The only thing I have to say that's even remotely negative is that the first trigger pull after a week of being holstered was a little stiffer than the rest. Not enough difference to matter in normal defense situations but just something to keep in mind if that first shot needs to be a pinpoint shot. Bottom line is I still love this gun.

You still love this gun? Are you crazy?? Just joking. You are now part of a silent majority of satisfied Sigma owners that just have to endure the criticisms of people who don't share our love and appreciation for a great gun.

200 more rounds through the sigma this morning.

It just keeps getting sweeter! Just gave her a bath; she's resting comfortably in the nightstand.

Just got back from the range with my new Sigma and new M&P9C

The 9c has a light trigger but it was scattering shots, the felt recoil was about the same.

I am not a great shot but I have fun.

The top target is the Sigma the bottom the M&P9c

Looks like you had fun today, Ben!

Did you prefer one gun over the other?

Jumping in here. Great comments guys. i have had my 9VE for two weeks and 600 rounds thru it with no problems. Trigger is better or I am getting stronger, either one is OK! I have owned and shot numerous DAO semi autos (92D, 96D, 5946, 5944, 2 Kahrs) and admittedly this one is the heaviest trigger so far. I am getting good groups both slow and rapid fire. Can't believe I'll be in to a brand new hi cap, polymer 9mm with four mags for $300! Plus $20 for a Glock belt slide holster and done!

I prefer the Sigma over the M&P 9C but not by much, it shoots more accurately than the shorter M&P but the M&P feels slightly tighter

Finally got to take my new SW9VE to the range Saturday. Put 350 rounds through it without a single failure of any kind. When I first got it I fired 150 rounds in an indoor range just to see if it would really go bang, which it did, but this was the first time I had a chance to shoot it outdoors.

This last outing I used factory 115 gr. fmj Winchester, 115 gr. fmj Federal, and 124 gr. fmj RWS, and 124 gr. cast loads. The Sigma didn't care what it was fed, it digested them all.

I did find that the inexpensive Wal-Mart 115 gr. Federals and my cast loads shoot pretty much the same. Makes my life easier as the cast bullets are a lot easier on my wallet than the factory stuff.

Now, I personally do not mind the Sigma's infamous hard trigger pull, although I will admit it takes some getting used to. Well o.k., it takes a lot of getting used to. But I didn't buy this Sigma for a target pistol, but for a carry pistol. And if that hard trigger keeps it from being fired unintentionally, then I'm all for it. It is the Sigma's reliability that comforts me much more than its hard trigger bothers me.

I never was, nor ever claimed, to be a great, or even good, pistol shot. As you can see from the targets, I have a long way to go. But the Sigma is such a pleasure to shoot that it makes getting there half the fun.

Yep, definitely need more practice!!

Cast bullet loads
