Default Sigma FAQ

Ok, ladies and gentlemen, this is an attempt to answer and inform everyone of the different questions being asked about the S&W Sigma. I will try to give as much info as possible and cover as much ground as I can.

First off, a little bit of background info.
The Sigma series pistols were created in 1994 and are S&W's successful attempt at producing polymer framed pistols. These pistols are DAO and only available as such. They came chambered in 40S&W, 9MM, and a sub-compact .380 version. There also was a limited number produced that were chambered in .357 SIG. The Sigma series pistols were so similar to the Glock pistols that Glock sued S&W for patent infringement. The case was settled out of court in 1997 with S&W agreeing to make alterations to the Sigma design and pay an undisclosed amount to Glock. In 1999 S&W improved the Sigma by shortening the barrel and slide by .5 inches, made the grip more comfortable and ergonomic, slightly enlarged the ejection port, and added an accessory rail which requires an adapter to mount anything.

Ok on to some questions I have been seeing asked a lot.

#1 Trigger job - This is extremely easy to do, All it requires is a few tools (Hole punch, paper clip) and can be done in a
matter of minutes unless you want to polish the internals. I'd recommend polishing if you have a gritty trigger. Here is a
video that covers the whole process. Link. The video was made by a fellow member here so if he chimes in be sure to thank him for a well explained and informed trigger job.

#2 +P+ ammo - There are mixed reviews on weather or not this "Hot" ammo should be used. I believe it is stated in the owners manual that firing this type of ammo will cause excessive wear and is not recommended by S&W.

#3 Dry firing - Feel Free to dry fire the heck out of it. Obviously if it "Requires" you to dry fire it to field strip it then its not going to hurt anything. I don't recommend this for any other gun though, and if you're really worried about dry firing the sigma then just buy some snap caps. I also hear that dry firing can possibly smooth out the trigger, but i'll let you be the judge of that.

#3 Accessories - There is lots of stuff you can buy for this gun, just look around. Google, Amazon, eBay, etc. If you're
looking for a well made laser then I recommend "The Machinists Crib" on eBay.

#4 Purchase advice - Q: Should I buy a sigma? A: YES!!! If you can handle a D/A trigger (which can be smoothed out and lightened) then this, in my opinion, is one of the best handguns you can buy for the money.

#5 The Plastic piece in the handle - This is actually a secret button that, when pressed, turns your gun into a bullet proof
sports car armed with machine gun turrets.....Just kidding, Its actually just a "space taker upper" so your mag fits in the
handle snugly.

#6 What's the difference in the Allied Forces version? - The slide is black. That's it. Oh, and the price tag. Here is a Link to a video of someone duracoating their non-AF version. Seems like it would work well enough.

#7 What does VE stand for? Someone correct me if im wrong on this but I think it stands for Value Enhanced. Also the F model was the first gen and had the slightly longer barrel and slide.

#8 Are there different sights? Yes, MMC and PTnight sights have some for the sigma. Just do a search on google and something should come up. UPDATE: I was just sent this link from a fellow forum member on here and will leave it up to you to make your own decision on weather or not you still want to do business with them. I won't be.

If there are any other questions please feel free to ask, and if there is anything I missed let me know and I will add it in.

Seems like you hit the high notes.
I think you only missed - what holster fits, (take your choice paddle, IWB, etc).
And what after market sights are avialable, (non laser).

For myself, I liked the TDR911 laser better than the one you mentioned, but that's one of those pay your money take your choice kind of things.

Nice work.

Maybe add an explanation of the code. You know. What does SW9VE stand for? And cover all the variables.

Thanks!

And not everything needs an adapter to fit the rail. The insight M4 fits natively.

i was looking atthis gun pretty seriously but the local shop near me kept pushing me towards a Detriot issued Glock 22 or an M&P. Obviously a big price difference. The Sigma feels much betetr in the hand that's for sure. Any thoughts?

If you want a pistol that goes bang everytime you pull the trigger and puts a hole in whatever you are aiming at then by all means purchase a sigma. Anyone of the faults that the glock guys go on and on about can be corrected quickly while still keeping the warranty intact.

This is a good idea, Joker. You might want to include a section on the Glock lawsuit as well. And as suggested by another poster in another thread, what is the "Stigma with the Sigma" (internet hearsay, etc)?

Welcome to the forum. I was shopping for something else when I picked up my .40VE. The thing just felt right in my hand. Needless to say, it went home with me.
Will it be my last gun - no, was it my first gun - no. But it's a whole lot of fun and a good gun.
I got mine with a $50 and 2 mag rebate. Hard to beat for sure.
The older ones had problems apparantly, but I've got nothing bad to say about mine. Sure it's a lot longer, harder trigger pull than my 1911's etc, but so what. It does what it's supposed to.

Thanks! Im going to call the S&W corporate store today and see how much they are selling them for there. If cheaper than my local store I'll take the short ride. Thanks for the input.

I'm glad to see this was made a "sticky". S&W has sold a tremendous quantity of Sigma's. Enough that Crimson Trace is taking a chance and making a Sigma specific laser for them. Imagine a company willing to bet $300. gun owners will part with $200. for a laser. I have two 9VE's and would buy a 45VE in a New York second if they made one.

I am new to the forum and was just about to post a new thread when i saw this one so it was good timing. i own a few S&W revolvers and was looking to purchase my first 9mm semi-auto. I've looked at a lot and found that i like the feel of the sigma sm9ve and the glock 19. I tried the M&P but it just didn't seem to fit my hand well.....just felt to wide.

Sigma reviews are all the map (good vs. bad) and the fact that they are lower cost causes folks to think that maybe the quality is not comparable.

I wouldn't mind adding another S&W to my collection but can someone speak to the lower cost.....the 19 and sigma seem comparable but am i missing something on features, reliability, quality of parts used to manufacture the product, etc.

Any feedback is appreciated.

thanks
Dennis

I just bought the SW40VE last week and I'm extremely pleased. I opted for the .40 over the 9mm for a little more stopping power. The Sigma feels like it was made for my hand, has a lifetime warranty and most importantly goes "bang" every time I pull the trigger. The trigger feel is very subjective of course. Mine is very smooth, but a little on the heavy side. I don't find this to be an issue.

I was at my local dealer's again today and he had SW9VEs for $303 with (2) mags. He allowed $260 on my used LCP so it would have been about $46 after taxes plus I'd get the rebate or the (2) extra magazines (at least he still had the coupons out). I chose something else but man I was really kicking that one around.

Is that a fairly good price on these?

Yes, $303 is a good price! Currently, about $299 is the lowest price I have seen anywhere.

The bad reviews I've read seemed to be mostly for early models.

Default Great Gun.

I've had my 40VE for 6 years and have put over 2000 rounds through it with not one failure to fire. It points dead-on and the trigger will smooth out in time without monkeying with the springs. I have nothing but good things to say about this gun. It is the unsung hero, the black sheep, the red-headed step-child of the S&W line, but it does it's job and it does it very well.

My son in law got a 40VE I tried but they were out said they would have more the next week. Well they did but, all they got in was the 9VE'S but, I'm like my grand kids and couldn't wait any longer. But I'm happy with the 9mm.

What holster do you use with your Sigma and your light?

I've never been able to find a holster for my Sigma and the Streamlight M4 Tactical Illuminator It's snapped on when it's in my nightstand. Fumbling around for my pistol and my Maglight is asking too much of me at 4 a.m.

In the winter with an overcoat I use a Blackhawk Serpa CQC paddle and when wearing anything lighter a Don Hume IWB Model H715.

You might be able to get away with a very large generic nylon holster, but I'd imagine it would be too large for concealed carry.

I tried a generic nylon holster and didn't care for it too much. I guess I will never get to carry a light on my gun :sigh:

Marcus, why don't you try your hand at making a kydex holster? It ain't rocket science. Kydex on e bay, about $5. A rivet, chicago screw or a simple nut and bolt and your in business. Kydex is very easy to work with. Toaster oven about 300 or even a hair dryer will do it. Just heat and mold it to fit. It's very forgiving. I use .80 for 1 piece holsters and it's heavy enough for a strong clip. Lots of stuff on YouTube or forums like this.

I just bought a sigma sw9f from my dad which he had bought and put in a box since the 90's, so it is brand new . i was wondering if anyone has any of these firearms and if they are the same as the new sw9ve, or is there any glitches because they were the first generation of polymer pistols made by S&W. Usually first generations of anything has glitches or problems. Took it to the range a couple days ago and i feed 150 rounds of ball ammo with one failure to eject( maybe it was the one box of PMC ammo that the range sold me, cause it shot Remington and Magtech just fine). Also, does anyone know if i can find a 17 round magazine anywhere. i can only find 16 round ones for the sw9ve, and even then they are kind of pricey $45.00. Well, hope to get some replies. THX

Default Holster

I bought a Hume JIT Slide for a G19 to fit my SW40VE. I had to stretch it a little. It fits now just a little too snug which assures it won't just fall out.

This is a very compact holster. It holds the gun very closely to your body.

All the Best,
D. White

I bought a SW9VE locally, I was looking for a 9mm and the price was right, it seemed cheap, with the slide release being cheaper than the 1911 slide release (not fair to compare) and it had the $50 rebate, which I haven't gotten yet.
Yes the trigger is harder then my 1971 M-18, in fact after putting 50 rounds through the 9 the other day at the range when I picked up the M18 it felt like a hair trigger.

But since using the SW9VE I have fallen in love with it!

I was breaking clay pigeons I put on the range backstop 50 YARDS away, although for the life of me I couldn't hit a baseball I also put at 50 yards, but that is not bad for a short barreled 9mm!

I was thinking of a M&P 9mm but now wonder if another 9VE would be just as good?

poch Gun broker # 158786216 2 NIB SS 17 rd for 68$ also CDNN 16 rd new SS 28.18$ 800-588-9500 As for the guns themselves I have 40F's and 40C's with night sights the early ones. I have"heard" about problems but the 2 F's and 2 C's have more than 5K through each- I had to replace a striker spring on the one F- 2.50$ and 15 min. I shoot them better than glocks, sights are still bright, and they are more accurate than they have any right to be. I have sold many and have many personal ones. I even had Blackhills leather make a dual gun shoulder holster, and attached DBL mag pouch- Excellent. Enjoy!!!!

Ladies and Gents I added an update to the night sights part of the faqs. Please take a look and give us your views on the company. I cannot speak for them as I have never done business with them.

MMC used to be a great company with great sights but they seem to have gone out of business in the last six months or so which seems to be why people are reporting bad customer service...

Just got back from the range with my new Sigma and new M&P9C

The 9c has a light trigger but it was scattering shots, the felt recoil was about the same.

I am not a great shot but I have fun.

The top target is the Sigma the bottom the M&P9c

Prime Winner...this point might be worth a new thread? I was told by Gander Mt when I purchased my Sigma that it has a S&W lifetime warranty as well as a one year warranty and a free cleaning by Gander MT.

I thought you were wrong....page 27 is page 27, eh!
Was suprised you were right.

So then the lifetime warranty only, applies to the original purchaser when new? if so, I hope I can find a new striker if mine ever breaks. From what I saw for parts list order, the striker assemblies have to be installed by smith & Wesson.

Nope....there is no lifetime warranty....not even for the original owner.

That was my point!

Straight from SW website:

Warranty Information - Smith & Wesson

I don't know exactly what this means; if you shoot it a lot, and things wear out, is this a defect in materials or workmanship? I guess it depends on whether you or SW is the one to define the term.

The book I got with my SW40VE last week also says 1 year.

What do you use to clean the polymer?

Anybody use something to shine it up on the outside? grip, frame trigger guard, etc...?

40 cal is correct. They only made the .357 sig for one year. They also made a .380 model SW380M. This was all stated at the beginning of this thread.

When did the lifetime warranty come into being? I bought a used Sigma originally purchased in 1997 and the manual shows it had only a one year warranty. And yes, it's broken. Seems the striker assembly is bad. It will not cock.

Thumbs up

Here's my experience...

I bought a used 1st generation SW40 for about $200. A couple of months later I had a case head separation on the range. The ejector was blown off, the slide retention lever was sheared in two, the slide was jammed partially open, half of the shell casing was stuck in the chamber, and the mag was blown out onto the ground. Later, I discovered the bullet lodged in the barrel. I contacted S&W about getting it repaired and they sent me a a prepaid shipping label. I sent tham the gun and about 10 days later I got the gun back. It had been repaired and test fired; cost=$00.00. But as I gave the gun a careful inspection, I noticed a crack in the frame that wrapped up around the trigger guard. So I called S&W and told them what I had found. They sent me a new prepaid shipping label and I returned the gun to them. A few days later I got a call from the service department and was told that the gun was not repairable. So, they offered me the choice of a new 2nd generation SW40VE or credit toward another gun. I took the new SW40VE and got to take advantage of a promotion to get a free range bag.

I still have that Sigma. I used it in IDPA competition for a while with good results. The trigger has smoothed out AND I have gotten used to it. Above all, it is reliable. If only it had a standard sized equipment rail!

BTW, Crimson Trace has a new product coming out shortly for the Sigma. It is a really cool looking laser that fits into the shape of the Sigma's frame, just ahead of the trigger guard. And no, it doesn't use the Sigma's rail. Check it out at S&W Sigma Laserguard Coming Soon | Crimson Trace Laser Grips
