I bought mine back in 98 because it fit my hand better, was cheaper, and other than the trigger shot very well. Still have it and still love it, just not the trigger. Once you get used to it, it's not that bad.

Sigma frame is longer... no dice.

This guy does and interesting test, but its hard to take seriously since he admits to running the gun dry and trying to shoot 1000 rounds. I've never heard of a pistol that can run 1k rounds completely dry.

This is post #153. Duh, lots of us like the Sigma! I would bet Plaxico wished he had been strapped with a Sigma! I sure wish they would come up with a "S&W45VE". May be a 12 or 13+1. I'm there, I'll take two!

I darn near bought a Sigma over a Glock just last year. Ultimately I like the Glock better, but Sigmas can be had on sale for under $300 at times and I think they're a great gun at that price.

Wildcard - be that as it may I still think S&W took most of the idea for the Sigma from a Glock.

Yes, that has been well established. A Glock is still an amalgamation of features from existing pistol designs despite that. I don't really understand where you are trying to go with this ?

And the beat goes on and on and on and on, and the wheel goes round and round and round and round! HA HA!

And where it all stops, there we are. Back where we started and what have we learned?

I think it can all be summed up as: Glock People like Glocks! Sigma People like Sigmas! Personally, I like Hi-Powers, but, wait a minute, that wasn't part of this "discussion", was it!

Very true. There is very little in the Glock design that is original. Since there was just no internet forums for it's predecessors (in the late 80s), there was no one to complain. If there was I am certain they would be ranting how those junk Glocks were just a rip off and that someone should sue!

My 9VE Sigma cost $269. It was made in America. It goes "bang" every time with good accuracy. It fires EVERY kind of ammo, including very slow lead rounds. The trigger fix was easy. If I was ever to have a problem with my Sigma, I wouldn't have to stand in a long, LONG Glock armorer's line. The Sigma fits my hand better than a Glock. I will admit, I like the extra-power Glock recoil spring in my Sigma for +P ammo. (Smith and Wesson doesn't offer one.) Also, if Glocks are great guns, AND if Sigmas are copies of Glocks, why don't the Glock snobs recognize that knocking a Sigma is the same thing as knocking a Glock? Frankly, I'm glad Smith and Wesson came along and improved the very few short-comings of these fine Glock pistols.

If the Sigma was a Glock clone the parts from a Glock would be interchangeable would they not? That simply isn't the case. They look the same and that's about it.

The designs are so similar that glock sued S&W and S&W agreed to "an undisclosed settlement" Early sigma's like mine can use glock barrels. I know this for sure because I have done it and fired it.

My personal take:

Glock
- non USA company
- horrible ergonomics (my opinion)

Sigma
- USA Company
- Amazing ergonomics

Thats about as simple as it gets for me.

Why resurrect a 5 year old thread? Well, I wanted to provide my personal testimony. I promise that I have read ALL of the previous postings on this thread, before going thru a pile of paper/receipts to find the timeline for my testimony.

I read a couple of statements saying that Glock parts do not fit in a Sigma. Well, at least one does.

I own a SW40F. Serial PAC2XXX. Trijicon sights were stamped '94.
The Gunbroker seller said it was a LEO trade-in, but there are no stamps/markings and it was shipped in a S&W paper box with homemade labels over whatever was originally in that box (Sigmas had the new plastic cases), I'm not certain. It did have wear on the slide & was shipped with 5 magazines. Definitely used.

In March 2011, I attended a show over at Will Rogers Center in Fort Worth-over by the Kimball. A gunsmith named TR Graham "the glocksmith" sold me what he calls a Match Grade Slide Lock.

This part, on page 24-25 of the owner's manual is part #10 - barrel stop.

He took time to compare it with a Glock 22 that he had at his table. He took measurements....I wish I remembered more of what he said, but the fact that he quickly fieldstripped both without looking down/away from me while he was talking had me distracted. He told me there was no warranty for me as this part was not designed/tested for this application. I agreed.

I can safely say that since then, I've taken it out every 3 months, running one/two 50 or 100 round box of Winchester USA and have had NO issues. Not one single problem. His part works. I have no objective way of knowing if its really an improvement, as I never switch back to the original part, and I think "more practice" is the biggest improvement I can make.

I've been hesitant to change rod/springs or make recommended adjustments, as I do not wish to undermine it's reliability. But I might, as I am curious and stupid about leaving things alone.

So I'd say the reasons are: 1) cost. I found a clipping from an old Cheaper than Dirt ad listing trade-ins: Sigma $219, Glock 22 $389, S&W 5906 $369, Beretta 92FS $399, S&W M&P $379. Not sure the date, but the other side of the page says "Romo needs to learn more from his teammates..." and he'd had 81 career starts. $150 savings is significant.

2) supported barrel -Buffalo Bore states: " The issue of Glock pistols not having a fully supported chamber is with the 40 S&W cartridge only, not 45 acp, 10mm, 9mm or 380 auto. While Glocks chambers are not fully supported in any of those calibers, only the 40 S&W brass is weak enough in the web for it to be a safety issue".

And, the only part on the gun that S&W actually made - (S&W Handguns '95, page 24 "Only the barrel is made at Springfield. Every other part is supplied by a vendor who won the contract, sometimes over S&W, on the basis of quality, cost, and delivery.....the assembly line is "U" shaped with a conveyor system that takes the guns to two assemblers, into a self-contained test range, and out for shipping. Four people run the show. They are assisted by some pretty clever machinery such as the one that assembles the striker. The assembly process is completely automated by a machine designed and built by S&W and turns what would be a fiendishly difficult manual task into a piece of cake"). Who made the rest of this?

As others mentioned, 3) the carbon steel magazines are very good. The 14 rd V/VE mags work and offer a cleaner fit. The downside is that there appear to be NO aftermarket magazines available. Nor are there any aftermarket barrels. And no one thinks you're cool.

The lawsuit?
Ironic, as S&W says in a 1995 brochure: "....the product of this effort is a series of pistols so innovative they resulted in 12 patent applications."

"The S&W Sigma pistols contain several safety features including a trigger safety designed to prevent the pistol from firing in the event that the pistol is dropped. Only when the trigger is fully depressed, and an internal safety striker safety plunger is lifted, can the pistol be fired. The internal safety is designed for immediate firing access, a vital feature to the professional who relies on the sure support of a sidearm. A patent is pending for this unique assembly".

Unique? Hmmm. seems there were two different opinions about that!

If anyone has or can point me to the actual court documents or how to determine if any of these "12 pending patents" were actually approved, I am very interested in reading them. Other than S&W literature, I've had no luck finding actual articles, etc. on the first generation Sigmas.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

TexasDog: I guess I do not understand why you put a " match grade slide lock" in?? was yours broken? Performance?? As for S&W 40 brass being weaker?? Than what?? Stainless Steel? I only ask since 9mm and 40 have the same saami specs, and the 357 sig has higher pressure than 9/40 Same? case as 40? Is the web of 357 sig brass that much stronger?? Never heard of a 357 sig going kaboom, not that they have not happened, I just have not seen it. As for patents, suits, I could care less, I can take my SigmaF40 and put 2-16 rds on target faster more accurately than I can with g1,g2,g3- 22's since I hit 6" higher with the glock 22"s than the Sigma ( head vs center mass/ X) I use the sigma. Some parts are compatible, with a touch here and there, but "I do not recall which ones", it was a long time ago. If you know of a source that tested 40/357 sig brass, I would love to read it. I was told that there was some 40 SW brass "cleaned" incorrectly and over time resulted in head separation. The first rd ejected, as a piece of the frame hit my finger, the second rd finished the kaboom. Ironically the same ammo was being used in a M&P, and 4006. It blew the mag out of M&P, case was stuck in chamber, and did nothing to the 4006, except case was also stuck in chamber. The ammo had been used ( 1000 rd box) and this last group got separated and was shot ~ 5yrs later when the above occurred. I can NOT verify the "cleaning", but I pulled some bullets, weighed powder, brass and bullets, all were in spec and had I not just seen what happened I would have loaded and shot them, no way to tell by gross examination. So I would love to read any good studies in regards to the brass. I will continue to enjoy my other Sigmas. Be Safe,

I think it's a value decision for many. Look, the Glock is an excellent pistol, reliable, well-proven, and well-supported by both Glock, Inc. and the after-market. But the SD guns are much less expensive...(generally about $300 +/- vs. $450 +/-)...and are also reliable. So, people do the math and many opt for the S&W.

I carry a glock 19 frequently. That being said the 9ve/sigma/sd9 or whatever they are calling them these days, actually fit my hand better. No finger grooves for one, but something about the grip on one just feels better in my hand. Why don't I own one? I couldn't hit anything with the sw40 I had. The trigger was so incredibly heavy and "catchy" that I would throw ever shot.

I've contemplated picking up a 9mm and dropping an apex kit in it. I'm just not sure if it's worth the investment at this point.

Indeed, I honestly can't tell the difference between the two in quality....I just figured you payed for the name.

My father has a Glock 19 and I carry my SD9VE and I personally love mine more but I have a bigger hand and a 19 is smaller.

I had a Sigma .40 for a short time, because a friend needed cash and offered it to me for very little. I field stripped it, and was very impressed with the workmanship of the thing. The ergonomics were first rate, and the trigger didn't bother me at all. Shooting it, I didn't have the annoying pinch I always get shooting a GLOCK.

Someone offered me more than I paid for it after I'd owned it less than a month, and I didn't really want to start stocking .40, so I let it go. If it had been a 9mm, it would still be here. One day, I will probably get one in 9mm.

Default Why would anyone buy a 4th Gen Glock?

Since the Sigma was replaced by the SD VE series years ago, I don't think that anyone is buying a Sigma for anything more than sentimental value. The Sigma was stigmatized by having the absolute worst trigger on a handgun. There were other issues, to be sure, but the long-traveling, heavy-pulling, gritty feeling trigger is what killed the Sigma - not Glock's lawsuit.

The SD addressed and fixed the problems that the Sigma had but did not do enough to improve upon the trigger for most owners tastes. Enter the 3rd-party innovators like Apex and Galloway who lightened up the trigger and shortened its travel so that now it pulls like the Go pedal on a smooth riding, double-action revolver.

Keep in mind that the trigger travel and pull weight ARE the safeties in most small, light-weight, self-defense guns. The SD stands for Self-Defense and the idea behind it is to counteract the rush of adrenalin when you're awakened in the middle of the night by someone you don't immediately recognize. To make sure you don't shoot your roommate or family member, the SD won't fire unless you really want it too.

They say that about a Glock, but a 4lb trigger pull on a bladed trigger is a lot easier to let one fly when you least want it to leave your gun.

Reliability-wise, the SD has built up that reputation as well.

The Glock used to be the King of the Block in poly pistols. Now it is just an overpriced Block.

What will an SD VE give you that a Glock can't?

$200 in your pocket.
No fear of accidental discharges
No fear of slide bite or slide slice
An easier to rack semi

What will a Glock give you that an SD VE can't?

A gun for every American pistol caliber made
A gun in every size for every caliber
Cheap poly magazines in a wide variety of capacities, including 50 and 100 round drums.
Interchangeable front and rear night sights
and, in deference to its decades on the market, lots and lots of 3rd-party add-ons.

I'm curious are the APEX trigger mods any good? I kinda like the fact the SD9VE has a heavier trigger to prevent accidents but I always wondered about it.

I almost wish I could have a snappier trigger but with the same pressure (best of both worlds for me)

This is the longest thread I've read on this great site where there were no pictures. Maybe I missed them?

Back in 2009 when I bought my first pistol, I chose a Taurus because I had read "so-so" things about the Sigma and it's reliability. I quickly decided I wanted to upgrade. Handled every type of pistol they had at my LGS and went with my G19 RTF2 because of it's simplicity.

I still have my G19--I'll never sell it. Love, love, love that gun. I also own (5) 2nd/3rd gens, (1) XD-40 and (2) revolvers. But I've never again looked at the Sigma or have any plans on ever owning one.

Was the Glock more expensive? Oh God yes. But I would stake my life on that thing, and that's worth at least the 200 extra dollars in my eyes.

1-I have three reasons for why I purchased one.
I brought it from an individual w/o paper work since it was his wife's and due to the terrible trigger she could not shoot it well. She wanted a 1911.
2-It was $200 used.
3-The heavy trigger pull makes accidental discharges unlikely. I carry if when working about my place.

Relative to the heavy trigger pull what is the latest on fixes for it; can someone refer me to a good post on that?

The glock is after you have purchased it has more advantages. Parts of all sorts over the internet, qualified armorers all over the place, and is the choice of multiple agencies. What US agency carries a sigma? I do also have glocks.

I own both a Glock 17 and an S&W SD9, both great guns but like many have said the SD9 feels better in the hand. I find both guns equally accurate but the SD9 is certainly easier to conceal. I keep the Glock in a quick access safe under the bed but I prefer to target shoot with the SD9.

I did install the Apex spring kit in my SD9 and the trigger is just as smooth now as the Glock but still just a bit stiffer which I like for the reasons mentioned.

ive owned more glocks than sigmas, and if i had to have an "extra" pistol to just have around i would rather pickup a used sigma than buy another glock, i liked the aftermarket support for the glcoks but i gave up on modding a gun that i dont like to shoot as much as other guns i had that cost less. ive moved away from polymer completely just because i enjoy shooting metal guns, and double/single action.

but if i needed one to have. i would get another sigma, i had the 9 and 40. sold the 40 for 250 bucks and regret it sometimes, just because it was cheap(price wise not quality wise) and felt really good in the hand. the angle and shape of the grip feels great.

polymer double action does not compare to the shooting experience of a solid metal gun. there are other things id rather shoot by far, but if i had to have one, side by side glock vs sigma? id pickup a sigma and keep the extra cash

I like my Glock 17. The quality, workmanship and reliability are 2nd to none. The 1st time I shot one I knew that I liked the weapon. It can be very accurate and consistent but has one flaw that I think in more recent times needs to be addressed. Ergonomics. I've since purchased a Ruger SR9 and S&W SD9VE both of which have a much better grip design than my Glock. I still like the 17 but the Ruger and especially the Smith have greatly improved grip angle and ergonomics. Easier to shoot and both have better triggers out of the box although my Glock has improved with use.

Default Three Things....Grip, Grip, & Grip

I bought the original Sigma 21 years ago partly because the assault weapons and high capacity ban was about to start, but mainly because of the Sigma's ergonomics. High capacity poly automatics have been in rapid evolution since the Glocks first came out, and the Sigma was an important step in that path. For many people, myself included, the Sigma grip felt better than Glock, but everyone has a personal "feel" preference. For me, the Glock grip was not a significant improvement over a Walther P-38 or a Browning High Power, both extremely "comfortable" pistols. Back in '94 it was hard to find Glocks as police departments were sucking them up and Sigmas were somewhat cheaper because of lower acceptance. Quality level is identical in my view. Isn't it swell that "adjustable" grips and aftermarket add-ons are beginning to proliferate to otherwise un-alterable poly pistols.

I own both. Both are reliable, but if I know I will be in a gunfight I will choose the glock over the sigma 9 mm that I now own. My Sigma was purchased second hand for 200 bucks. Man's wife did not like it for her personal gun due to the trigger which is the only downside of this gun. She wanted a 1911 just like what her husband had. Trigger pull is about 50% of hitting something. A heavy pull also slows down the speed that you can accurately fire any gun. These all count against my particular sigma. I understand that trigger pulls have gotten better. Then you might ask why am I packing a sigma in an open carry holster as I type. When doing outside work on my little estate i want the gun in a soft holster rather than a hard holster to prevent bruising when my hip strikes something. Even in a soft holster with that long 12 lb plus trigger pull that gun is not going off. Sometimes the magazine button does get push and I have had to search for dropped magazine. I carry it mainly for dealing wild creatures and if needed for a trespasser. Most of these are not packing guns. On the street I currently carry a G33 (.357 sig subcompact glock). The glock trigger is a wonderful combat trigger, especially if you learn trigger reset for it. The grip of both guns is fine for me, I just find the Sigma trigger to a handicap.

I had a nightmare experience with my Sigma years ago that left me cursing S&W up until just a few months ago. I swore up and down I would never purchase another S&W firearm. I purchased a .40 Sigma in the late 90's and it jammed on literally every kind of ammo I put through it. I sent it in to S&W to get checked out and they said they tested it and everything was fine. I brought it home after it came back to the dealer, took it out and same thing again. Back it went to S&W. This time they said they had polished the feed ramp. Well, when it came back, you could tell they never touched it. My dealer agreed. That pistol was immediately sold at a loss to me. I understand that every manufacturer makes a lemon now and then, but the service I received cemented my decision, until I broke down and bought a new Model 66 .357 earlier this year which I am selling, because I now look at it and go, "Why the hell did I buy that." even though it is a gorgeous revolver. That was just my experience with S&W and the Sigma. I have owned 5 different Glocks and have never had a single issue, not even a jam. My EDC is a Glock 21 in .45acp. Nowadays, it simply comes down to personal preference as all the major manufacturers are making quality pieces.

Yes, no question of it for me.
Not that there is anything wrong with a Glock. They are excellent guns.
It's just that the Sigma works better for me.
Full disclosure: It's a moot point for me. I bought two SW40F pistols waaay back when. I did not like the trigger or the sights. Relatively recently I change out the triggers for Apex kits. That made a huge difference for me.
It just feel better in my hand than the Glock, it's my choice.
One or our sons is a LEO for a department that issues and approves various Glocks. He used to hate them. I "raised" him on the Sigs I was issued. Like me, he initially preferred the S&W M&P to the Glock. After a couple years using the Glocks, he's fine with them. He can outshoot me, easily. Even when I cheat.

One exception to the Glock's utility. Like many departments, his requires the use of a light on the rail under the barrel.
He says there is a huge, undiscussed problem with lights on Glocks. He says there are too many malfunctions to list, and they are intolerable. He says it is a problem Glock will not acknowledge and it is serious. So far, he says, no solution. He says Glock blames the shooters. Of course they do.
For those who might ask, he is talking about the Gen Three and earlier with rails, and the Gen4.

As I age, I find I want a gun-mounted light on my home defense gun. Emulating our professional military son, I hung a Streamlight on a Safariland mount to attach to my S&W M&P357Sig and fired 200 rounds through it, thoroughly blackening the light. No hiccups.

It's still a personal decision.

I have one of the early ones I love it have never had a malfunction in all the time I have owned it, 10 years at least. It was a rebate deal for 99 bucks, from my 460, really has been perfect with all ammo and thousands of rounds. Oh yea its a 9mm. I can only expect the newer ones are at least as good. Maybe a better question why buy a 51r.

I will have a SW40VE coming in about a week or so. Can I put the extended slide lock lever for Glocks in this pistol? I know I'm gonna need one, so I hope so. I know I am gonna take out the pigtail spring and get the outside spring replacement from the sigmatrigger dude. Some people are just taking the outside spring off and leaving it like that but I can't do that. I saw one dude who put a ball point pen spring on as the outer spring, if you can believe that.

The only Sigma I have ever owned was the SW9M and it soured me on Sigmas. To Smith and Wesson's credit when I sent it back to them they gave me credit on the full purchase price towards a CS9D (great gun). I have since acquired several Glocks (and several S&W autos - to include a FS M&P40) but I'm done with the Sigma.
