Sigma / IDPA and similiar question

Hi,

Based on the reviews on this forum and my own handling of the sw9ve i am considering purchasing one.....i know the trigger issue but i am used to shooting revolvers so i don't anticipate that being a problem. They feel good and based on what i've read here they are very reliable and the S&W warranty is great.

This will be used for target shooting and HD, however, in the back of my mind i think about getting involved in IDPA or similiar organization....not to be a world champion but just to have some fun and improve shooting skills.

My question is do you / would you use a sw9ve in IDPA or would i be laughed at (LOL) as being an inappropriate firearm for that purpose?

Your Sigma is a great choice for all that you are asking it to do. I would also wholeheartedly encourage you to get involved in the IDPA/USPSA action shooting game. It is a lot of fun and good training as well. You will need a good holster, at least 3 magazines, most of us have a minimum of 4, a magazine pouch and the mandatory eye and ear protection.
Most shooters also have a range bag and sometimes a folding camp chair as well.
Do a search on their respective websites and locate a nearby club and then have a blast. NOBODY will EVER laugh at anyone coming out to join them. I shot last summer with my S&W 25-2 revolver and a whole bunch of moon clips with .45 hardball ammo. Wasn't the fastest guy on the range but was REALLY deadly and had a hoot doing so. You will to!!!

I use Sigmas for trainers and loaners, and am an IDPA match director.
Anyone at my matches who makes fun of another shooter who is legal and safe gets a serious talking to.
Sure, I prefer my $1000 Paraord Tac Five for sanctioned matches, but I sometimes shoot a Sigma in club matches SSP. Shoots just fine and handles very well.

There are some "outlaw" clubs that are using the IDPA name and who-knows-what rules, and I have heard some horror stories about their "equipment experts."

I have shot both IDPA as well as IPSC, had a 1911 then. You will have a ball doing it and as "growr" said, no body will laugh at you, maybe laugh with you.Most certain you will get a nick name.(hence my log-in name)It made me as well as our children, more knowledgeable and confident with a firearm.Never shot my 40ve in one? could be interesting to try though.

My experiences shooting IDPA and USPSA has been some shooters enjoy the time outdoors having fun, comparing guns and equipment, putting lead down range. Others are all tense and stressed to shoot for speed and accuracy. Being new with whatever sidearm you select will be fun. Relax, watch, observe, ask questions. If you do not know any other shooters, the best person to ask is a RO (Range Officer) or the Match Director. Follow the safety rules. If you forget some things no problem, it's a gun game. Just remember this: KEEP THE BARREL POINTED DOWN RANGE AT ALL TIMES, when not holstered.

You will like IDPA. It is addicting. My thoughts on gun choice would be to look for a M&P instead of the Sigma. JMO

I agree about the MP. I have a SW9VE that I really like but there is no comparison to the S & W MP, especially the MP 9 Pro. I don't shoot in competition but my Pro is my favorite range pistol. If price is a consideration stick with the Sigma. Great pistol for the money!

If you can afford the difference, the M&P is certainly great choice and is getting to be very popular in USPSA/IDPA. I would never feel under-gunned or outclassed with a Sigma, extra magazines, pouch and a good holster. Sometimes you can get all of the accessories for the Sigma for the difference in price! Well worth it then...
The biggest thing is go and have fun with whatever it is that you decide to own.
If possible, try to live fire both and decide from that which works best for YOU.

Went with the sigma 9mm. It just fit my hand....felt better and the price, rebate/extra mags just helped make my decision. After shooting a S&W 642 the trigger on the sigma is a non-issue (lol)....at least when dry firing it. Since this is my first semi-auto it seemed like a good choice although i understand the M&P is an upgrade it just didn't feel comfortable in my hand.

Now i have to get out to the range and gain some proficiency with the sigma before giving IDPA a try. I'll probably get out and try to watch one first.
