Default SW9VE slide doesn't want to go back on

I just bought my SW9VE used a couple of weeks ago and just got to the range today. Against my better judgment I used some left over reloads from the previous owner. On the seventh shot I had a bulged case that ended my session.

We brought it into the maintenance shed and had to tap the case deeper into the barrel some to remove the barrel, then firmly tap the empty case out of the barrel. Not good, but a lesson learned on unknown reloads.

I tried a little bit to put the slide back on the frame with no luck. I had field stripped it when I bought it and it was a piece of cake. I put the thing away so I could calm down if you will.

It seems like something is binding in the last inch. Is it safe to pull the trigger with the slide off? It almost seems like something isn't setting right.

I will give it a look in the AM when I can look at it with fresh eyes.

Mike, when you put slide back on, make sure not to use any force downward. If this make any sense.

I don't know what the problem is but let me say this:

Make sure, sure that the guide rod is seated properly. If it isn't seated all the down in the rear, it can be a disaster. If it's on that little ledge you may not be able to get the slide on or off. Others have reported this problem. I don't see any reason you cant pull trigger with the slide off.

Also, do a thorough visual inspection to make sure there aren't any burrs that may be restricting the slide movement. Hopefully, nothing was bent or damaged while tapping in the maintenance shed.

In forum after forum I read of problems with re-loads, FWIW.

Good luck!

I'd say guide rod isn't seated properly. Make sure it lays flat along the barrel and is on the shorter notch not the longer one.

That is exactly what it was, I did have the magazine in. I took it out and it went right together.

I did something stupid like that with my Ruger Mark II pistol. I was field stripping and putting back together many times in a row....and was getting the process down pretty good, when suddenly things would not go together by the smallest of margins. It was the magazine too. I would never field strip to clean my pistol with the magazine in, but put it back in for whatever reason at the shed.

Leejack, I will take it back apart and check again for burrs. Small brass rods were used so I am thinking I should be OK there. Thanks for the replies!

I just field stripped and cleaned it well and it seems all is ready to rock and roll at the range. I will report later how it went with factory fresh loads.

Glad it worked out, Mike. Now load your Sigma up and head to the range. I'm headed to the range Saturday.

Just got back from the range and fired off 50 rounds of Federal 115 grain FMJRP without a hiccup. I had to rush because rain was on the way, but only had a couple of low fliers, the other 45 were not to bad at 15 yards.

Some of the brass got black and sooty on the outside, but was flung all over the place. Not too dirty to clean up at all either.

Thanks for the replies!

Welcome to the forum.

I would have bet on the guide rod not installed properly. Never would have guessed that it was the mag - not many people leave it there for the field strip.

Oh well, all's well that comes out safely.
