Thumbs up SD40 thoughts, review, and the rattle

The good-I really love this SD40! Picked it up yesterday morning. Went to the range, I had results that made me smile, and I'm a horrible shot with a pistol! Haven't been in the pistol game for long, and with my other (Bersa Thunder .380) I'm terrible! With the SD, I was making head and centermass shots all day.(no groups to post pics and brag about though). I just need more practice and will get much better.
The M&P Trijicon sights are awesome. Not a single FTF or FTE. The Winchester PDX1 180gr JHP's are great, and the recoil is easier managed than with the 165gr FMJ Blazers, but those have some screaming velocity on them! This gun was definately the answer to my problem with the Sigma. I only wish it came in a stainless slide version.

The negative- Like a few of the other guys that have posted, my magazines rattle like a can of marbles. If there's less than 8 it's fine, 9-14 it rattles like crazy. I read one other member who had the same problem and they sent him mags that no longer rattled. Maybe it was the same batch, idk...my gun was made 6/24/10. I'm going to give them a call first thing tomorrow morning. Hopefully they'll take care of it like they did for the other guy!

Let me know if they do, when I asked about it I was told there's nothing they can do. That's my only complaint about the gun.

will do Ron. some call it being over-picky, but when it's your firearm you have every right to be. is yours the same way with the more than 8 less than 8?

My M&P40 mags rattle as well when filled with at least 14rds. Each Mag I have holds 15rds. of 40S&W or 357Sig. Oddly enough when filled with 357Sig, they don't rattle.

That rattle could definitely be a put-off, if the gun is to be used in serious applications.

just got off the phone with SW, his first answer was "they're double stack, they're going to rattle"
then i said my sigma double stack mags didn't rattle, and he said "send them back, one at a time if you prefer" so we'll see what happens...

I know this is a Smith forum, but I would still love to see an SD40 vs. SR40 review done. I like the price point of each and am in the market for a new .40SW to buy. I like that Ruger made the slide with extra beef to slow down the recoil. I’m told it is one of the softest shooting .40SW’s on the market. But I wonder if that makes it at all ammo sensitive. But I loved my Sigma’s grip feel and the SD is clearly from the Sigma design. So I think it would feel stellar in the hand. And I find most of my double stack magazines to have at least some rattle. Unless the complaint is that these rattle like maracas then that would just be strange. I know AR mags rattle pretty bad sometimes. I used to stretch out the springs just a touch and I think it helped. But then there was also a lot of heat over there also. It may have affected the brains some…

SIG Sauer mags tend to rattle a lot too. It doesn't affect anything. And the argument that it is a liability with noise in a tactical application is nonsense. Unless of course you are in a completely noiseless environment and you are silently doing jumping jacks then possibly the mag rattle may give away your position LOL!!!

i really was considering an SR40 but the ones I looked at were scratched/scuffed like crazy. even new! the finish isn't tough by any means. the fit/feel is a lot tighter than the SD for sure, but the SD just feels so right in my hand! from a draw, you can get on target quick! i just really hope this mag situation gets remedied. yes the rattle is that bad, i can hear them whilst walking while it's holstered. i don't think this is the case for all SD models otherwise we would definatley see more complaints than the few on the board. if it doesn't bug you bob, i'd say get the SD! you'll love it.

Or there are people who realize mag rattle is a part of it and don't make a big deal out of it.

well aren't you witty
this is a forum. the purpose of a forum is to share advice, info, learn, etc. apparently other people have the issue as well, some it bothers and some it doesn't. no one is making a big deal out of it but for those people that may be in the market to get an SD, now they know one slight con to the great list of pros to the gun.

I have yet to see any double stack mags that don't rattle to some degree. It is a side effect from the way the mag has to feed rounds in order for them to feed properly. The rattle comes from the space between the lips and the taper. I have shot just about every make out there and they all do it. I stronger mag spring may or may not reduce the rattle but it comes with increased risk of jams and failure to feeds due to the increased tension. Glock, Sig, HK, Ruger, etc they all do it. The larger the round the more likely it is to have these issues. Like I said you are making a problem (calling it a con) out of a non issue. Also the OAL of your ammo can cause rattle. I reload my 9mm and 40 and use shorter OAL for higher velocity and I still am not bothered by the rattle. Like I said to most people it isn't an issue.

i really don't feel like arguing with you. yes im very well aware that all double stacks rattle, however it is well within tolerance. the mags that i have rattle far worse than any glock, sig, or hk. sigs tend to be loud rattlers, but these far surpass it. im getting new ones from SW so obviously there was a known problem that they remedied with the other sd owners who had the problem. i've yet to see where you have shot, handled, owned an SD40 therefore it's easy for you to pop off about it when you know nothing of it.

Apparently you don't know how to use a search function or are too new to know. I was one of the very first owners of a SD40, own several other S&W's (SD9, SD40, Sigma, M&P). I also own a kimber, American Classic II, Remington 870, Remington 870 tactical, several AR15's, a couple of Mosin's, a Ted Williams lever action 30-30, a couple of 22's, and a handful of misc pistols and long guns. I know about the SD40 quite well and carry mine daily and shoot it weekly. So next time you want to run your mouth about me do a search first and you will see I know what I'm talking about. Oh and there are pictures to boot. I'm not trying to be a jerk or "internet bully". But, to me it seems like you are making a mountain out of a mole hill.

Also do I think there was a problem with your mags, no. Is smith willing to replace them anyway, yes. Why because the last thing they need is people bashing a fine product when it is easier to replace "the bad mag" with a new one. Smith and Wesson has top notch customer service, no doubt. I have seen them do things I would never have imagined. They have always stood behind their products 100%.
