Default SW9VE shipping in cardboard boxes?

just out of curiosity what happened at smith & wesson to make them change from the blue hard case to cardboard boxes to ship the sigma in?

I keep seeing people posting pictures of theirs in a hard case, but mine shipped in blue and white cardboard

They ran an email poll right after I got my Sigma asking if I would prefer to keep the plastic hard case, or go back to the old cardboard box. I voted for the cardboard box. I don't know what the results of the poll were, but I wouldn't be surprised if most people didn't agree with me.

I suppose if you only have a gun or two the plastic boxes are nice, but if you're like me, what do you do with them? I think I've got a dozen of them (not all S&W). They take up space, but they're too nice to just throw away. I'm sure they cost more than a cardboard box too.

Mostly I suspect it was to reduce costs.

I didn't hear about the poll before. I thought the hard case was a plus. I would of voted for the hard case myself.

This is the first I hear of this.

Count me in for the hard case too.

Going to cardboard is all about profit, nothing more, just profit!

Poll, what poll?

That is very very surprising!! Personally I never use the box after I get the gun home but I still like having a nice plastic case sitting at the bottom of the closet.

Didn't know about a poll, but cardboard is fine with me. I have a variety of the plastic boxes around, but never use them unless I am disposing of the gun. Until that time they just take up space and have no real alternative use. Same with Ruger's boxes.

Some day I will probably just toss them.

Well of course it is. That's why they're in business.

Maybe "poll" wasn't the right word. I get emails from Smith & Wesson all the time. Probably got my email from the Sigma warranty card, or I might have given it to them years ago.

One of those emails, not too long ago, asked my opinion of the plastic box and asked how I would feel about going back to a cardboard one. I replied that I wouldn't care one way or the other. I'd just as soon have cardboard.

I use the plastic boxes to store my spare parts. If I had the card board box, I would still keep it, because eventually I usually sell the pistol to replace it with a new one that might catch my fancy and like to have the box and manual with it. I am sure that S&W have gone to paper vs plastic in an attempt to keep their cost down on these pistols.

I think the cardboard box is a crock. The blue case have to only cost them a 2-3 dollars. Cutting costs is one thing but come on.

I've thrown out every case I've ever got with the purchase of a handgun. I have a 3 cases that can hold multiple guns and don't use the originals. Mainly becuase the original case is typically designed to carry one gun and/or shaped for a certain gun. Way too many handguns to carry each in an individual case to the range. I can put 3 or 4 in an aftermarket case if I fit them in just right.

Was at the gun shop today and over heard a man complaining about his gun being shipped in a cardboard box. Clerk said he has no control how S&W ships them. Man was not happy.

I'm a dealer and while Yes, S&W just got a raise, giving out cheaper boxes & charging the same rates (or higher) I am sick of the room storing all those plastic boxes take up. Have you seen the M&P auto plastic boxes? They are big as a briefcase!!!

I think it shows a companies willingness to go a bit farther than the opposition. For the price of some of these guns it should come in a gold case. I think cardboard makes it look cheap, I vote for the case. If they stop using the cases I want an extra mag!

All my older revolvers came in cardboard boxes. Some are collectible themselves now. I keep all my boxes and associated paperwork for my own enjoyment and for possible use at resale. My first handgun, a Ruger Super Single Six, came in a cardboard box with the spare magnum cylinder in a red felt bag. I even have the original hang tag from the gun shop. $141.00 !!!

I got my SD40ve new a little over five years ago, and it came in a cardboard box. However, I believe my two inexpensive new J frames, purchased more recently, came in a hard plastic factory case. I'm not sure of the rhyme or reason for these things.

I'm just glad to know that switching from the more expensive plastic boxes to the cardboard allowed the CEO at S&W to get that huge bonus he is accustomed to--Hurrah Corporate Greed!

Personally I like my SD9VE that came I a cardboard box. I don’t think getting it ina plastic box with a handle or not would make me like it more. If I had received it in a plastic box it would, have ended up in the same place the cardboard box went. That was in the township dump. I don’t evaluate packaging when it comes to guns. I just evaluate the guns.

I don't mind a cardboard box versus a plastic box. Now, if they shipped in a beautifully finished wood presentation box, that would be different...

I'd much rather a gun company economize on the package the gun comes in, rather than the parts that make up the gun. Some gun makers only include one mag...and some of these guns are a lot more expensive than the SDVE or M&P series guns (the last time I bought a Kimber, it came in a nice plastic box, but only came with one mag.)

Ruger used to include a huge "boat anchor" padlock with their guns...when I bought my SR1911 a while back, it had the same cheesy nothing lock that you get with all other guns. I don't use those trigger locks on my guns anyway, but the Ruger padlocks were handy to have around the house!

Default To me the answer.......

Have a universal gun case and put the guns in it when you need them. I got my mod 10 in a box many years ago and thought it was pretty cool for a box. Just make sure that they are sturdy.

I don't know, but when I buy a firearm, that's what I purchased. A firearm. I didn't buy a box, paper or otherwise.
