Default New SD40

A friend of mine recently purchased a Sigma SW40VE (which he really likes).

I have always been a revolver guy and when I looked at it I was shocked.... auto with no safety!!! Then he let me dry fire it. Seems to be safe as any DA revolver I have used. Never even considered an Auto for my defense pistol but now I was very interested.

I did a little research, went to the store and I ended up with the SD as I liked the sights and trigger a little better.

The only thing that I can complain about so far is the fit of the plastic against the frame by the muzzle is not aligned very well. It's a cosmetic issue only but it does bug me. The Sigma did not have this problem but it does look like the plastic it slightly thicker.

As far as performance is concerned I am very happy with my purchase. I have 250 rds through it now with no problems. I am shooting a little low and slightly to the left but I have a sneaking suspicion that may not be the fault of the SD .

My friend’s Sigma has over 700 rds now with only one hang up as the slide did not catch when the mag was empty. This only happened once and he was using cheap ammo at the time.

Overall... two new very happy S&W owners.

Thumbs up

Welcome to the forum!

I'm glad that you and your friend are happy smith campers.

You'll overcome the low and left thing, it's common until you get use to the gun.

Have fun and post often!

Congrats on the SD purchase!

Low and to the left is a sign of pushing the gun as the trigger is pressed -- I've seen enough posts to think this is pretty typical with M&Ps and SDs. I do it myself, although I've gotten better with the SD by practicing (and/or the pistol has gotten smoother as it wears in).

Thanks for the tip Rover. I think I was also using a little too much finger on the trigger. Still shooting a little low but i seem to have worked out the "to the left" part. I am confident a few more rounds will take care of the problem. It has been quite a while since I have done much shooting with a pistol.

One thing that I really like is how easy it comes to point. When I bring it up It's just right there. When I first got it I wanted to see where my natural point of aim was so I closed my eyes, brought it up, opened my eyes and got a big smile.

I have a little over 500 rounds thru my Sigma and nearly all of them have been low. I assumed it was me until recently when I shot it side by side with my newest gun. With no change in my technique, the other gun is dead on and the Sigma is well low.

I had been thinking it might be the trigger pull, but now I'm seriously thinking it might be the front sight is just a fraction high. I'll have to measure things at the range next time and try firing from a rest to see if my theory is correct.

As far as everything else, my Sigma is 100% reliable. I do plan on taking apart the trigger assembly some day when I have time and buffing it all up. I do not plan on changing springs or removing the "pig tail" spring as some have done.

I will have to try it from a rest and see what it does.

The Trijicon front sight sounded like a cool extra when I bought the SD but now that I have seen it in low light conditions I would like to get the same for the rear.

Anybody know how do you go about adjusting elevation for those sights?

I have the same problem with my SD9, but I'm left handed and mine seem low and right. Glad to hear it's probably me an not the gun! It is my first DA auto.
