Default Boy do I stink

I thought the IDPA match was last week but it was this evening. They turned it into a classifier since a Masters is coming up.

I really stunk it up. Didn't even make Marksman.

Got any NRA classes in your area, or perhaps someone teaching competition pistol?
Shooting novice is no crime, but it usually means fundamental problems that can be cured.

All you can do is show up with a pistol. Just keep working on mastering the fundamentals and soon you will be a pistolero. Fifteen minutes of dry firing, draws, and mag changes each day will go a long way. Just be quadruple sure your gun and mags are empty.

I wouldn't say it's a fundamentals problem as much as it's one of forgetting them when that stupid buzzer goes off.

Just shooting in the back yard I do OK

Ah, but it is a fundamentals problem: no time stress in your practice, so you don't know how to operate at speed without losing accuracy, right? Common problem.

If you don't want to pay an instructor, here's another way.
Buy a timer you can clip on your pocket with a delay. Practice with an IDPA target, not a bullseye target. Draw and fire one shot as fast as you can hit the zero down; anything else is a miss. If that gets boring, try the 7-yd part of the classifier (2 to body, one to head, reholster).
From 10yd, try the IDPA El Presidente: 3 targets, 2,2,2, reload, 2,2,2.

If you work from the holster and use a timer, you will learn how to work with speed from the holster--amazing!

And it's nothing unique: everybody is Mr Cool until the timer goes off!

Shot timers aren't cheap from what I've seen. $75-$150.

I use the PACT Club timer: about $125 and last a lifetime.
Classes are from $80 to $300 for the basics, going up to $75/hr for advanced one-on-one instruction.

Then there's the cost of several thousand rounds of ammo for practice and club matches.

If you catch the competition bug and do sanctioned matches, then there's the travel, motels, $100 entry fees, another gun or two (need a spare) and much more ammo. And a nice plaque if you finally win a class (no money prizes in IDPA.)

Well, the way I see it, as long as I can have an engrossing hobby like shooting, I'll never complain about having nothing to do and won't spend it on counseling trying to "find myself."
Life is full of choices, isn't it?

It looks like you can execute the fundamentals so that is very good. Now you just have to master applying them no matter what is going on.

Fast is fine but accuracy is everything.

Yeah. Not bragging but I've been shooting since 1992. I think I have the fundamentals. It's just that this transition to action shooting is proving more difficult than I expected.

10 yards

10 yards out of the 66 as I was chronoing loads

7 yards. Some single some double

2 7 yard groups and 25 on the lower-right

Couldn't agree more here. I know serveral folks who take anti-depressants and pay money to shrinks.

My hobbies and my family keep me from ever needing that sort of thing.

Well, I don't know how accurate internet quote boards are. I was really looking for the interview with Earp where he talked about how often men emptied their revolvers at him missing every time. He would respond by carefully aiming and firing. Earp stated he deliberately aimed at every man he ever shot and that was his secret. I think he did the interview in the early 1920's. I couldn't find it though.
