Default Sigma barrel defect

Just wondering what to expect from S&W.

Brought home a new Sigma 9 today and as I was cleaning it noticed 2 rough patches or gouges in 2 of the grooves in the barrel. I filled out the form at S&W website and waiting for their reply.

Anyone have any idea what to expect in terms of time and trouble to get a new barrel?

Thanks,
'heel

You'll soon be a better judge of that than we are. Please let us know how it works out.

It's off to MA tonight. Here's a pic. Those two dark spots are rough and pitted, like a bad rug burn except on metal instead of skin.

Yep, not normal. Did you send in the whole gun or just the barrel? I would expect a barrel swap to be a fast and easy procedure.

They wanted the whole gun. I didn't send the mags since the instructions only said to include them for FTF problems.

Thanks.

Credit goes to my 12 year old. For lighting he used an LED flashlight with a piece of white paper between the barrel and the light. Only took two tries.

Yep... that one is hosed. Bad button or cutter, I'm guessing.

I filled out the online form last Sat. Got the email with instructions and label on Tues. If I remember right the web site said 1 - 3 business days. So for me it was on the 2nd business day. Made for a long weekend waiting tho'.

It's gone as well as it could so far. Hope it goes well for you too.

Got the email this morning. Wow I didn't know we weren't suppose to drop our guns off at a Kinko's type store. That's what I did the last time. Anyway thanks, I hope it goes well for you as well.

Red face Small flat spots on barrel

Does any on here have small flat spots on their barrel? I noticed my barrel has two small flat spots on the end of my barrel right at the end of my muzzle where the muzzle and the slide meet when the slide moves back into battery. I had field stripped my SW40VE for a thorough cleaning when these caught my eye. I will try to post pictures when I get home from work. They are shaped like two small triangles one at 3'o clock and the other at 9'o clock with the large end of the triangle facing towards the crown of the muzzle and the small ends tapering down into small scratches that run down the barrel for a ways. Also when my barrel locks up it is tight at the bottom of the opening on muzzle end of the slide with a small gap at the to of the opening. I can push my barrel up with my finger when the slide is in battery. Sorry if some of my terminology is incorrect, I tried to be as descriptive as I could..seems like that little bit of play would affect my accuracy. I noticed as I was cleaning up and packing for shipping. Just fedeed my Sigma out yesterday to S&W but not for that reason. Have been having problems feeding since it was new, terrible when it was brand new but now it still "jams" a couple times at least every trip to the range, the slide has been locking back on half full mags during live fire to where I shoot a couple rounds, it locks back, I release it and fire a few more rounds, it locks back and I repeat until the mag is empty. Also the slide slams forward when I insert a fresh mag, which is not uncommon with many autos from what I understand but hadn't been happening to my Sigma until lately. Also my rear sights were too loose and could rattle out of alignment just by firing, so my accuracy would get progressively worse until I noticed and would try to re align them with my thumb and continue until they moved again. Should be in Mass. @ S&W by tomorrow hopefully and I'll see how things go. I hope they contact me during service and not just give it a once over and send it back. Any thoughts on my barrel anyone? Seems like there's some experienced folk in this thread so thought I'd ask. Also I can replicate my misfeeds by manualy feeding rounds through the gun so it can't all be attributed to "limp wristing" although the carpal tunnel probably doesn't help..thanks guys, I'm still learning..

Talked to them yesterday and they said it was in the mailroom. Got an email overnight with a tracking number for 2 day delivery. Should be back tomorrow.

Got a letter today from S&W informing me they had received it and would be 2 to 3 weeks for repair.

Wow man. Now that's fast. Did you contact them first, or did they contact you? I'm thinking i'll be getting mine back pretty fast too. I don't think there's anything wrong with my Sigma.

I called them.

I figure it shouldn't have taken too long. One look at the barrel and they would know it's no good. I envision it going something like this, "Yep, he's right, it's no good. He needs a new barrel. Hey Joe, get this guy a new barrel, throw in a new mag for his trouble too."

I should know today.

Good for you for looking over everything. Safety is involved. Kudos to the 12 year old. The gun is not safe. Send it back.
But it's a good choice for a gun. Mine is fine now.

Thumbs up

Got it back today.

There was a new barrel with no defects. It had obviously been test fired. There was a magazine in it but it's well used. I bet they forgot to take it out.

Overall, I'd give them an A-. They get points for communication, ease, speed and zero cost of getting the gun to Springfield and back. A new mag or token discount voucher would have given them an A+. I don't expect perfection but bad quality did slip through and I didn't have use of the firearm for two weeks.

My big lesson learned is that just like used, ALL future NEW purchases will get a frame, slide and barrel inspection.

Looking forward to getting to the range soon.

QUOTE: TARHEEL LET US KNOW WHAT S&W DOES ABOUT THIS BEEN HAVING A LITTLE TROUBLE WITH THEM ON A MATTER I just sent a sigma 357V with a broken striker assembly on 6/10/2011 and received it back today before noon. They sent a prepaid fed-ex mailer. The sigma now works fine. No I do not know how it broke, I purchased it from an auction and it was broken when I received, never fired it till today. So from my perspective they were outstanding this time. I had a 629 15 yrs ago that I bought new and could not hit a target backing board ( 2' X 3' ) from a rest at 25 yds with target ammo proven in my 29. It went back 3 times before the frame ( gun) was replaced due to the frame being drilled off center. I pd the shipping out 1 time. They initially put the sights back to center and shipped it, replaced the barrel and shipped, replaced cylinder , trigger etc till they finally checked the frame- this took MONTHS!!!! I wish you the best of luck, I have seen both sides.

Damn I shouldn't have included my magazine with the gun. I'll probably not get one now. I think my mag is bad because the slide never locks back after the last shot.
