Default Just bought a new BodyGuard 380

Brand new in the box. was going to carry the SD9 or M&P 40, but this is super small. Have a model 442 also, but thinking this may be my everyday no matter what carry. Looks pretty good and well built. anyone have any experience with this piece?

I'm pretty satisfied with mine, I carry it occasionally. It's everything you said, just know that the laser is pretty useless. It works and functions on mine, but I don't see it as ever being used in a SD situation. The trigger is long and stiff, but knowing that going in, a little training and it's ok. I don't shoot it much, occasionally a box of 50 rds just to keep my feel for it. I like it, works for me.

I have the Ruger LCP but have shot both extensively. From what I've read if you get a good one hang onto it, they tend to run hot and cold. I carry my LCP as wardrobe needs dictate, preferring my M&P 340 for EDC.

Turbo, what is the problem with the laser? I've been considering this model for my wife and she works a lot at night. We thought the laser would be a good item for night use.

My limited range experience tells me we will be using our SD weapon in a life and death situation. I really don't see having the opportunity to push the button, but that's not saying we can't. I sighted mine in when I 1st bought the gun about 8-9 months ago. I was practicing this past week and found that I may need to resight it in. I was able to hit my POA much closer through the open sights. So to sum it up, I think I may need to readjust it, but it may be because I handle the gun diferently than I handled it in the beginning. Not neccessarily because the sight lost it's POA.. Most of my defensive practice, training involves me simply pointing and shooting with double taps and such.. If I get the laser on, it makes that training more effective.

I pocket carry my Bodyguard 380 everyday and love it. It serves primarily as my BUG to my Glock 27, but on the hot days when I can't conceal the 27 the Bodyguard is perfect. Very satisfied thus far.

I like mine, but don't carry it that often. I have grown more fond of my M60 and typically carry that IWB in a Remora no-clip holster. I keep the BG380 around for when I need to throw something in my pocket.

BTW, I agree with Turbo on the laser. It's a great concept, but I'm not sure it is totally practical in a SD situation. I practice most of the time with mine using only the fixed sights.

I had an LCP and currently have a Bodyguard. The bodyguard proved to be the better of the two for me.

It has real sights which is nice. I find I'm quicker and more accurate getting off shots with the BG than I was with the LCP. Despite having the real, larger sights, I haven't had any snag issues, and I do carry it in a pocket holster on a somewhat regular basis.

I find that the grip on the BG is slightly larger, which allows for a more secure grip. The safety is a nice option for those who care, and the laser is what it is. Not necessarily essential for many people, but there if you want it.

Despite the complaints I have read about pushing the button, I find that my laser is very easy to activate. I don't know if I have a magic index finger length and strength combo or if my button is just easier, but I have no issues with it. It was dead on when I first tried it, as well as the most recent time. I started training with the BG without the laser to get the hang of it, and not until recently have I started putting the laser into play. I'm getting to the point where I can un-holster, turn on the laser, and fire a shot in just about the same amount of time as without the laser. Still, I cannot say whether or not I'd use the laser in a real life situation. I think that depends on me and whether or not I decide to train using it one way exclusively.

As far as how it operates, I find it's tamer than the LCP. Again, I think that's due to the grip. I have put many rounds through (lost count) without a single hiccup. The trigger is a tad long but I got used to it quick.

I carry it very often and it is by far the most comfortable gun I carry. Appendix carry is so comfortable I honestly have to pat myself to make sure it's there, and a pocket holster works very well in a few of my pants.

Bottom line: I give it a solid A.

The Body Guards have had an issue with an internal trigger spring breaking, rendering the pistol useless. I know an LE who bought one for BUG use. Brought it out to the range to test it and was going to let me shoot it after he ran a couple of mags through it. It never made it through the second mag. We brought it inside and I did a little web research and found thetrigger problem to be a common issue. I contacted S&W and advised them, no questions asked, just ship it!. After getting a shipping label and marking the label/box to advise them it was a back up to duty weapon, I shipped it off. It was back in 2 weeks, up and operational. I and the owner put 100 or so rounds through it, ran like champ. That was 3 months ago. It has returned to the range three times since, still going strong. The laser is a bit dim for daytime use outdoors.

CQ, where are you finding this info, I can't find much anything.. I heard it maybe once someone broke one.... you're making it sound like it's very common and I really don't see any benefit to cry wolf if it's just another internet myth blown out of proportion. It's not like the Glock history of going Kaboom... that's pretty well documented and easy to find...

I just "Googeled" it and got numerous hits about the trigger problem. I think it has even been addressed on this forum. I don't think it is myth, I have seen it. When I contacted S&W customer service the rep also stated it was something that they have corrected in newer production, so I think it happened more than once. Hey, I am not knocking the Bodyguard, I think it is a fine BUG. Like all "new" model guns these days, regardless of the maker, early models often have bugs to be worked out that are not identified until they are fielded.

"i've had my bodyguard for less than a month and the spring that tensions the safety lever has broken in half. the safety won't stay in the up position anymore. lot of teething problems with this gun from what i've read. i hope smith wesson gets them all worked out because i like the ergonomics and accuracy of this gun. kahr p380 is the best .380 out there in my opinion but it's quite a bit more expensive so i took a chance on the bodyguard.....you get what you pay for i guess."

"I received a replacement for the pistol that failed after the first shot and proceeded to the range for testing. Unfortunately, this replacement also failed with exactly the same failure mode as the first one after only 15 rounds. Disappointed again, I returned it for yet a third replacement (yes, I am determined). This time the trigger remained in tact for 100+ rounds. However, the takedown pin came loose on two occasions (one of which resulted in a smoke stack) and the left side laser button requires superhuman force to activate. It should be noted that the third replacement was selected based on a serial number approximately 2000 digits removed from the first two. I love the feel and features of this gun and will return the third replacement to the factory to get the laser button repaired and to tighten the takedown pin. I know that S&W will eventually "make it right". Oh, I should also mention that this gun shoots low (off hand and benched)."

"Amen! After having my BG 380 for a year and shooting over a thousand rounds thru it with no problems it flew apart at the range last month. I packed it up and sent it to S&W. They have had it for 5 weeks now. I just e-mailed them to find out whats up with it. I have shot many, many guns this is the only one I had fly into pieces. S&W should be ashamed ! When I get it back its gone. I will never buy another S&W!"

"I liked the gun for the few rounds I shot before the trigger failed to reset. It was accurate and controllable. The trigger is very long, but it is a DAO pocket pistol, so I don't have a problem with that. Also, the laser adjustment screws did not function properly to sight it in, and the activation buttons were way too difficult to click--hoping they replace the laser unit as well."

took all of 30 seconds to find that, just saying. I will repeat that S&W has fine CS and will fix any problem that belongs to them. A fixed BG is a fine BUG.

I didn't say it didn't have teeething problems, but You have shown examples of a few of them. I'm sure if you look long and hard enough you will find a few of the trigger fails, the problem is you made it sound like a large number and that just isn't so.

The main problem with the BG is the Firing pin. Trust me it WILL break! I got mine early last year, cleaned it, and only did dry fires with snap caps on and off for like 3 months and low and behold half of the firing pin fell in my hand. I sent it back to S&W and they replaced it with the same pot metal type pin. I then surfed the net and found a BG forum and others who found this to be an issue. The other issue is the little allen screw for the laser will work itself loose and cause your slide to jamb if you don't secure it with some type of removable lock tight.

They have fixed the spring on the take down pin for slide removal in the newer models. Not sure I heard internal trigger spring. May have to look into that one.

I brought mine to the range today for the first time since owning it and put 100 rounds through it without a problem. Good accuracy and just a very smooth shooting gun. I had a friend with me who has thousands of shooting hours logged with the Army and he was also very impressed with it.

I own a BG 380 and haven't had any problems. To be honest I really don't use it much like I thought I would. Maybe in the summer I'll carry it more.

Hi I'm interested in knowing how everyone with a BG380 feels about a 380 for sd I have a M&P9c and a ppk 380. I tell people that and they all laugh at the PPK.. Thoughts or experiences in actual circumstances. 380 Hornady critical defense is what I use for sd in it

I prefer the larger calibers, but carry my BG occassionally, ask the naysayers if they'd like to guinnie pig it and take a few rounds of that 380..

My BG380 takes turns with my BG38 for pocket carry. I also have a Crossbreed for the .380 that makes it a very comfortable IWB carry. I do have single stack 9s for IWB but for the pocket the .380 is best. I must have one of the good ones, laser's fine if anemic in daylight, the 38's laser seems stronger. No breakage of the safety spring although I am LH so I carry it with safety off. No FTE or FTF so far.

I think the new gen Bodyguards were a real stretch for S&W, took them out of their comfort zone, so some issues were had. Maybe I'm lucky I got two good 'uns, and I'm keeping them.

I primarily carry my Glock 27 which is a .40, with my Bodyguard 380 as my BUG, but there are times when I can't carry my G27 due to clothing, weather, etc and I'll only carry my Bodyguard loaded with Hornady Critical defense. The way I see it the .380 is still better than throwing a rock, and with enough practice with shot placement I have no doubt it's an effective SD weapon.
