Default TruGlo TFO sights on an SD9 VE

Decided to throw on a set of yellow/green TFO's that I had originally purchased for an M&P. The old sights came out easily with a brass hammer and punch. The front sight went into the parts bin, the rear sight went into the trash can (on a side note, don't use a brass punch of you want to keep your plastic rear sight). I used an MGW M&P Sight Tool to install the rear TFO just to see if it would work. I was surprised at how well it fit the SD9 and the rear sight went on with almost no effort. The MGW tool does not appear to work with the front sight, so 5-6 taps with a plastic hammer and punch and the the sight was in. About as easy of sight installation as I have ever done (and I have a lot). The TFO's are visible at night but shine brightly in the sunlight. The sight picture is clean and they are fast on target. I normally go for a plain black rear and tritium dot front, but since I had these already I am going to stick with them.

And yes, that is a melonite coated barrel from an SD9. I swapped barrels between my SD9 and my SD9 VE. I actually prefer the new look on both guns. Stainless slide with a black barrel and a black slide with a stainless barrel.

Dam...I wish I dared do that. I am worried I will tear something up. I ended up buying a laser for mine.

Nope, it's the barrel from an SD9 (which is all black). See my 2nd post.

Installing sights on the SD series is really easy with only a punch and a hammer. Especially after installing new sights on a couple 3rd gens.

Nice job and a definite enhancement to the pistol.

Any chance you could post up a profile pic? I'd like to see it from the side.

Thanks,

PS, have you already installed an Apex spring kit? I was trying to order another spring kit last night in anticipation of adding a SD9VE to my kit. I could not get the order in - I think Apex is down while they move to new facilities.

Here you go; side profile of the TFO's along with a shot of it's newest accessory, the streamlight TLR-4 LED flashlight + Laser. I do have an Apex kit installed but only because I had bought 2 of them back when I first picked up my SD9. I checked with Midway USA and they say they are backordered until June 21st, but there are a number of places that sell them.

Thanks for the side view! That really does look nice. I may have to pop for a set of these sights the next time Botac is blowing them out.

I spotted an SD9VE marked at $299 two weekends ago at a local gunshow. There's another this weekend and if I see it again at that price, I am buying one.

The TFO's are both tritium and fiber optic. The light pipes butt up against a tritium vile inside of the sight. Plus the top is partially open to let light in.

And to contradict my original post, the MGW sight tool will work on the SD series front sight if you remove the shim (doh). I didn't even consider that when I installed the TFO's. So it seems like they should call it the MGW M&P and SD sight tool.

Default TFO's

I've read some complaints about the fiber rods coming out.

To be on the safe side I put a drop of clear epoxy on each rod.

Can't see it and it doesn't affect performance.

Cheap insurance.

Good Luck

I'm digging the look of the barrel swap! Kind of makes me look at mine like there's something missing, hah!

The truglo sights are great but I feel like they lose their effectiveness in changing light.I also noticed that when you're in a moderately lit room and you aim at something bright, the sights black out like anything else. However, on a bright sunny day or pitch black darkness, these babies rock!

Love the modifications. The light/laser combo looks great and it looks like the sights turned out perfectly. Gives me something to look into doing with my SD40 VE. I also like the look of the swapped barrels between the two pistols. Really made for a unique and beautiful gun.

Some of the SD40's shoot low and left out of the box. Not sure if the SD9 had the same issue or not. Are these sights adjustable at all,or similar to the stock SW ones?

What was the TFO model #'s
that you used? I have NEW, 40VE that I am converting to the similar specs that you used for your 9VE. Yes the stock sights are plastic junk. Have added a Arma Laser to date, it's very small and fits close to the rails, VERY..VERY bright.

My SD shot low left when i first shot it and i couldnt beleive i didnt notice it but my rear sight was almost completly to the right, the left dot was on the right slide edge. A couple taps of a hammer and drill bit and it was centered and now shoots dead on.

I love the sight set you have on above, i am ordering it for myself as i never liked matching dots as they blur and i wonder if Im sighted or something crazy. Its just easier to differ front and rear sights quickly

The sights I used on my SD9 VE are the same models for the M&P 9/40. Even my M&P sight tool works perfectly on the SD.

Do you remember which direction these get driven in and out? Thinking of getting a set.

Default Challenges Replacing Front Sight on SD9VE

I am quite curious in the way that you removed the OEM front sight from the SD9VE -- the rear sight was very simple, a couple of taps with a punch and brass hammer; however, the front sight is proving to be a bit of a bear! Any thoughts or videos, to which you could point me, as I'm afraid I may just cause some damage ...

Default TruGlo TFX fit the SD9VE

The TruGlo TFX TG13MP1A does fit the SD9VE, just oil it up punch it off and tap back in the TFX, yes I know it says it won't fit, it does. Was more of challenge to get original front site to move/remove than it was to install TFX. The TFX is well built, all metal, encapsulated, and bright 24/7. Now off to the range to sight her in.
