my brother came by this morning and told me not to buy any 9mm full metal jacket ammo, he said it will wear the gun barrel out in less than a thousand rounds. is this true?, i use federal 115 grain fmj to target shoot and hollow points for defense. thanks

He probably lies about other things too.
I personally can vouch that a hard steel quality pistol barrel will last through 50,000 rounds Precision Delta FMJ minor power 9mm handloads and still achieve 4" accuracy at 25 yds. I replaced all the springs and some minor bits in the pistol, and sold it for a personal shooter.
Now if you are shooting el cheapo made of recycled who knows what, you are on your own.

Ask your brother why he thinks copper is harder than steel.

Thats really funny....I never heard that one before! Think about this for a minute: The jacket of the FMJ is made of copper (very soft), going down a barrel of hardened stainless steel. In other words the barrel will most likely be the last part to wear out to the point you would even care.

I can tell that, like me, you love your brother; I can also tell that, like my brother, yours is in some respects a dumb***, too!

He is rght. FMJ ammunition will wear out the barrel after 500,000 - 750,000 rounds. However, at an average price of $0.30/round for 9mm ammunition that will cost $150,000 to $225,000. I am not worried.

some bullets are copper plated over steel with lead core which might be a little harder on the barrel but still last over 100,000 rounds
your brother may need his head examined

I had better get some spare barrels before the rest of the world reads this one.....
Just clean the copper fouling after each range day and don't worry.
Shoot the snot out of it.

I agree with all statements made above. I am under the assumption that your brother believes that FMJ's will wear out the barrel, but Hollow points won't. Is this correct, or is it just 9mm all together, and no other caliber will do so?
Here Is another one to tell your misguided brother. Are you ready?? Here it is!!
Hollow Points have the same copper jacket as FMJs.
