Default S&W SD40 VE ammo choices

Hello everyone. New to the forum and since I am now a good ol' American S&W Owner I would join the forum and get the information and knowledge I seek strait from other owners.

So, I got the S&W SD40 VE and I love it so far. Have yet to shoot it, as I just got it today, but I got a box of Winchester White Box FMJs just to start breaking the gun in. Gave it a quick clean and hand cycled a few rounds. Well, since they are flat nose, and the ramp is a bit small, it occurred to me maybe this gun wont be keen on feeding JHPs. I read a few things here and there of some having issues and others having none. Wont fully know until I shoot it but any heads up would be great.

I personally like Hornady Critical Defense as well as good ol' Hydra Shocks. Really hope those end up cycling tho.

Thanks in advance for any information I can get.

I haven't seen any particular problems with the Sigma/SD series using most any American commercial ammunition or my reloads, except for isolated cartridges out of spec.

Tips with a new gun are the same as for any, clean as you did, don't fill the mags full the first few times, don't ride the slide when loading, keep fingers off the slide when shooting, etc. Disassemble, clean and dry the mags periodically, don't get lube in the striker channel.

Thanks for the info. Yea it is still pretty new so I figured I would need to take it out and run a couple hundred rounds through it for a good break-in.
14 round mags but I have only been loading 13 for now to get the mag springs loosened up a touch.

I will keep an eye on it when I finally start firing.
Thanks again!

I don't have any experience with a SD40 but my SW40 has fed everything I have tried flawlessly; flat point, round point, hollow point, etc. I did polish the feed ramp but it was probably unnecessary. The engineering of the feed ramp, magazine, and follower on the SW/SD series is very good.

The feed ramp didn't appear to be that small compared to my old Ruger P95. I had a Star Modelo Super B for a while and the ramp on that was nearly non-existent so I could only use FMJ. From what I hear tho it seems the SD/SD VE/Sigma all feed just about anything and if it doesnt, its probably the gun or mag itself and not the line of guns.
I cant wait to finally try it out.

Have you tried it yet? I just got one yesterday and the C.D rounds will not feed, and my hollow points feed half the time. Im not too happy so far.

I've had my SD now for a year have shot over 1,000 rounds through it easily.

No malfunctions of any kind on my side. The only malfunction the firearm ever had was when I was teaching my friend how to shoot ( he limp wristed and had a FTL ) and again when I was teaching my younger brother to shoot ( same deal, limp wristing ).

I've shot all sorts of rounds through my SD. Including the cheap Russian made ammo. And have never had any malfunction.

yet anouther + for the SW40VE serries (which I am told is pretty sim to the SD's). Had it for a year or so now and over a thousands rounds... no problems with any ammo except the CCI shot shells, they just dont have enough power to cycle.

I even shoot reloads with no problems.

Welcome to the forum. First off, I think you're getting ahead of yourself a bit. Hand cycling ammo is a futile practice. Whether or not a gun will function properly can not be determined by hand cycling ammo, only getting out and sending lead down range will do that.

Secondly, I would opt for a street proven JHP like the Speer Gold Dot, Winchester Ranger, Federal HST, or even the old Hydro Shoks, before I would choose Hornady Critical Defense, which to my knowledge there is no data available on real world shootings with that ammo.

I second this. Personally, I would endorse the HST, DPX, then Gold Dot. I prefer the Ranger Bonded to the Ranger T, but the most important requirement would be reliability, then accuracy. Even the non bonded Golden Saber would be ok, at least in the heavier weights, if that was what the most reliable and accurate load in my pistol.

Default Question

I am a new firearm owner. I purchased the sd40ve a few weeks ago. The issue i am having is it wont feed. I have only used federal ammo so far both fmj and tried the alluminum. Question is is it the ammo or the pistol?
