What are some holster options for the sd9ve?

I'm looking for an OWB holster for my friend he has an sd9ve for concealed carry. He is a big dude at 6'6" 300+ lbs he said wants to carry concealed OWB because of his gut. He doesn't think he could carry IWB comfortably. So he is looking for something that rides high on the waistband and preferably kydex. He said he would wear it around the 3:00 position. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks God bless

I found these at Midway. SD9 | Smith & Wesson Semi-Automatics | Smith & Wesson
There are custom kydex holster makers on the forum, maybe one of them can help ya. I make leather holsters but I don't have a mold for a sd9ve.

CatFanInTn 01-14-2013 09:12 PM

Check out foxx holsters. Home. I believe they're all iwb but its worth the look.

Yeah I've thought about Foxx and as far as I've seen they only have IWB, but thank you though.

guitarzNgunz 01-15-2013 10:33 PM

Seriously nobody knows of one holster for an sd9ve?

stringpicker 01-15-2013 10:40 PM

Blackhawk SERPA...great OWB holster with adjustable cant, and two options on height off of the belt. You can also adjust it for thinner belts.

If he decides to go IWB, look at Kholster...$45 with a lifetime warranty, even if you trim the leather to fit better.

Would you happen to know the model of the correct Blackhawk holster for the SD9VE? It looks like the number 25 is the correct one but I can't find any in stock locally to try it out. Looks like Amazon will be my best bet, but I want to be sure that I get the correct one the first time. Thanks.

Prince86 01-20-2013 10:37 PM

Model number 410525bk-r. Your right about the 25 on the box. It will say s&w m&p 9/40 sigma. I own a sd40ve and it fits perfect.

Most M&P9/40 holsters will fit the SD series of firearms.
I use a M&P40 Galco Doubletime holster for my SD40 VE. The straps can be reversed or OWB carry. Here it is as an IWB
http://i430.photobucket.com/albums/q...3/IMG_2145.jpg

For OWB carry only this is a good holster
http://www.cdnninvestments.com/mp9resedeho2.html

Ofc.JL 01-22-2013 12:14 PM

Yep, what EBK said. The SD is very much the same as an M&P FS, size and shape wise. S&W did that for a reason, I believe. Trying to let the good reputation of the M&P line rub off on the new SD line,
Anyway, my SD's fit right into all of M&P holsters perfectly. I wear a Blackhack SERPA daily and the SD snaps in just like my M&P. Perfect fit. Neat deal, huh?

a62rambler 01-24-2013 10:27 PM

Here's a couple suggestions for your friend:
Multi Holsters ~ Quality Custom KYDEX Gun Holsters for Inside, Outside, Multi 2-in-1 Inside/Outside Waistband, Pocket & Mag Holders
Crossfire Holsters L.L.C.

The links might not be to the OWB holsters as they were in my stored links but both makers offer OWB for SD series.

MGMorden 01-24-2013 11:33 PM

I wouldn't get the Serpa (unless its their Serpa Sportster) with a gun with no safety. The button release is right by the trigger and people have shot themselves drawing. Don't get me wrong I've got one and use it, but it's for a safety-equipped P-95. Also to be frank, concealing a kydex belt holster ain't exactly easy.

Look for a "pancake" style leather holster.

Densantis makes them in both thumbreak and open-top models:

DeSantis Thumb Break Scabbard Belt Holster Right Hand S&W SD9 SD40

DeSantis Speed Scabbard Belt Holster Right Hand S&W SD 9mm 40 S&W

Better than a story, I've got a video :)

SD holster

S&W uses a Bladetech OWB included with M&P kits.

That holster fits SD 9&40 very well.

On Bladetech's website is a holster called "Phantom".

It is IWB and works well.

I have one for a Glock 19, if they make one for the SD series I think that would be an option.

Good Luck

I just got a holster for my Glock 22 and it fits my Sigma SW9VE well so I am sure it will fit the SD.

Bianchi Evader Model 4584 part #23892 and is an auto retention holster

What are some holster options for the sd9ve?

oldtexan,
that seems to be a dead link. it wouldn't open for me from tapatalk...but link or no link...I have a Blackhawk! CQC Serpa holster that is a stage 2 retention and it functions flawlessly. I've heard about the concerns of some shooters, but honestly...someone would have to exhibit EMENSE firearms negligence to shoot themselves or others while deploying their weapon from this holster. I will admit that I bought my first sidearm(SD40 VE) about 7 weeks ago...growing up in southern Alabama I am no stranger to firearms, but I had only handled a few pistols in my life...however...I have been obsessive about firearms safety...as i believe we all should be...and i constantly read on here and have been trying to learn every aspect of my pistol...the more information the better. I do not remotely know all there is to know about pistols or firearms for that matter, but I do know that all firearms are only as safe as the operator of that firearm. I would recommend the Blackhawk! Serpa to anyone! it is extremely comfortable and very easy to quickly and safely deploy my sidearm. for me, it was the perfect solution to open carry my SD. I love my Serpa and my SD!

I hope this eases the mind of someone considering the Serpa...and I hope I didn't sound like a douche...cause that was not my intention...

thanks,
Daniel

ricwest 02-27-2013 11:27 PM

from what I have read on people shooting themselves or having accidental discharges with a Blackhawk Serpa holster, they have been pushing the release button incorrectly. Instead of applying slight pressure while sliding the index finger across the release which aligns the index finger in the correct location on the slide. they have been pressing with the finger tip. This allows the finger to slip inside the trigger guard and onto the trigger. result is BANG.

cavegeo 02-28-2013 09:37 AM

IMHO any holster that could allow a ND is not a holster that I would wish to use. Under stress of a situation where one needs to deploy a handgun is going to be stressfull. The holster just needs to cover the trigger and the user should not need to operate anything to get there handgun in to use. Just KISS if retention is need due to job requirements then they are other manufactors that have holsters that do not present issues of NDing while deploying the handgun.

ricwest 02-28-2013 11:50 AM

That's just it.. the holster isn't causing the ND, it's the person drawing the weapon and putting their finger on the trigger before acquiring the target. A proper draw will not have you placing the finger on the trigger.

It really comes down to building muscle memory. Luckily I work from home and I can practice drawing 50-100 times a day. I practice both concealed draw with a t-shirt or jacket covering my weapon (unloaded) and I practice as if I were open carrying. Just to build the muscle memory that will take over in a crisis situation. It was the same reason we practiced over and over in the military.

Just for the record, this is not true more often than not. I have about 15 holsters for the M&P and only about 3-4 of them will fit my SD9 or SD9VE. Anything molded like custom kydex will not fit and even some leather holsters won't. The best holster I have for the SD9 under the guise of being an M&P holster is the Bianchi 75 Venom.

As far as the Serpa holsters go, there is also the issue of debris blocking the release mechanism. It was because of this that the military and some law enforcement agencies dumped them.

I'd like to get a leather one eventually but the ones I have found are a bit out of my pricerange, and i'm worried about them being kinda sticky.

I'm still looking at -http://shop.blade-tech.com/revolution-94045-p-384.html but idk since it says m&p if it'll fit my sdve.
(EBK- if i went with this one, you think it'll be ok?)

hmbiohazard 02-19-2014 02:43 PM

M&P 4.25 inch barrel holsters fit the SD9/40 just fine. my blackhawk is made for a M&P and works like a charm.

i love my serpa. never had a ND, my finger never comes close to the trigger. people who have ND while using a serpa do so because of operator error, not the holsters fault the operator is a idiot

dajogejr 02-19-2014 04:00 PM

I like the Serpa myself.
I can't blame a holster of any kind for improper use or training.

I have 2 guns I carry often and I use the same holster and love it. I carry either a SD40VE and a Stoeger Cougar Compact and both fit perfectly as do many other similar sized guns. This is by far the most comfortable holster I have ever had. I carry the Original Tuckable model.

Your friend and I have the same problem carrying IWB. If he doesn't mind leather instead of Kydex, have him look at the DeSantis Speed Scabbard. It rides high, has adjustable retention, two cant positions, and fits the gun perfectly.

I have the same problem of having a big gut and not wanting to carry my sd9ve and my sd40ve IWB. I purchased the fobus evolution paddle holster and I am happy with it. I still want to try carrying IWB so I just ordered a Alien Gear holster yesterday. Price was about $36 shipped. They seem like nice holsters. Will post some pictures when it comes.

-I'm right there with you. I'm looking at something like the DeSantis Speed Scabbard too. Or the Tagua PD2 paddle holster. At 5'11" and 252 lbs, I'm not exactly svelte! I don't exactly have a big gut, I'm built more like a tree trunk/stump. People don't think I weigh what I do, but yeah, I do. That's the farm boy in me, I guess! Will this work for the sd9ve if it's got a laser on it?

RickyRoadKing 12-30-2014 01:59 AM

Hey y'all,

I came to this thread because I pretty much had the same question as the original poster. Looking for a decent holster for a SD9VE. There are a couple of other threads on the forum on this topic, but this thread seems the most comprehensive. I see a few options here, but what I guess I'm learning is there are very few thumb break options out there for this pistol. Am I right about that? It appears the DeSantis Speed Scabbard Surly posted does have a thumb break model, but that's the only one I've found.

The other options I've come across so far are this Forbus model:
Academy - Fobus Smith & Wesson Evolution Paddle Holster

Or, just have a custom one made from either of these two places:
The Original | 1441 Gear
IWB Holster w/Adjustable Belt Clip - Cook's Holsters, LLC

However, like I said, not many thumb break options out there. Can anyone confirm that?
