Lots of reading here if you search, but overall the SD are fine guns. I own a new one and love it. Triggers are tough, sights are cheap but overall a dang good gun for the $$$

Mike I ordered the APEX trigger modification for mine today. I have some Williams Fire Sights on the way as well, between these two upgrades it should make my SD40VE one FINE FINE firearm.

I don't think so, but as has been mentioned, there are kits to reduce the trigger pull...Apex and Galloway are the two that I know of.

I have several M&Ps (FS & Compact in .45, .40, and 9mm) and a Shield 9mm, as well as a SD9VE. I've previously owned a SD9 (the first version) and a Sigma 9mm. The M&Ps are an upper tier, if you will, in S&W's polymer line...but that isn't to say that the SDVEs are bad guns. They aren't...they do have some "bargain" features compared to the M&P line: polymer rear sight, stamped sheet metal slide release, different triggers, no interchangeable back straps, and a polymer guide rod/recoil spring assembly. The SD line is not available in .45, it only comes in one size (4" barrel), and has a different take down/field strip process than does the M&P line (the SD is like a Glock, in a lot of respects.)

The SDs are very affordable...right now, Academy Sports has them listed for $319. I paid $299 at Academy Sports several months ago for mine. They come with two 16 round magazines. I replaced the polymer guide rod/recoil assembly with a stainless steel one from Galloway Precision (stock weight), added an extended take down lever, and Pachmayr grip sleeve. I also replaced the rear sight with an M&P rear sight.

I like this gun...it fits very well (ergonomics) in my small hands, it's reliable, and for the money (even with the extras I put into it) it's a very good bargain. A lot of people complain about the trigger pull (mine seems to be getting a little lighter with lots of dry fire, but it's smooth - no gritty feel, which most M&Ps do have) but I don't mind it...it's not as heavy as the DA pull on the revolvers I own, and on a gun with no external safety, I like a heavier trigger. It's not a target pistol, but it is a very good home defense and car gun, IMO.
