Default Brownells has rear M&P sight in stock...S&W tells me it's a restricted part...

Neither Brownells or Midway had the factory rear M&P sight in stock when I checked the other day, so I decided to call S&W. The CS person told me over the phone in the most serious way that the rear sight is a restricted part that only an armorer can buy. When I mean in a serious way, you would of thought I asked him if they could sell the blueprints to up-coming projects.

Luckily I checked Brownells again last night and saw they had it in stock again which seems anyone can buy.

That is a dandy idea on S&W's part given the number of slides damaged or ruined because people cannot get it through their heads that (1) the little set screw is NOT what holds the sight in place, (2) the sights are held in place by an "interference fit," (3) S&W uses a hydraulic machine to install both the front and rear sights, (4) even with a "sight pusher," moving the sights is next to impossible most of the time unless you have the strength of Hercules to turn the cork screw on those tools - and if it is too easy, shooting will result in your sight "drifting" on its own because that tiny set screw will not hold them in place, even with Loctite, (5) use of a pin punch will leave ugly marks on the sight or, if you "miss," on the slide, or such use will crack or break night sight vials causing all sorts of other problems, (6) after market sight makers tell you otherwise so you will buy their sights thinking all it takes to install them is to loosen the little set screw, (7) too many replacements and all of the friction or interference is gone requiring an oversize sight or a new slide to really hold; and, (8) aftermarket sights really don't help you become a better shot - they only add to the cost of your pistol and their installation usually detracts from its value.

I took the rear sight off my M&P when I had it using B & J Machine sight pusher http://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-to...prod54823.aspx to get to the striker block with no problem. I've taken off quite a few friction fit front and rear sights that have/don't have a set screw from many brands of guns and I can buy sights straight from the factory as well.

Most of the time, my simple delrin punch will do for rear sight removal. http://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-to...h-prod512.aspx I know people are looking to replace the plastic rear VE sight for an M&P one like on the SD9/40, so I'm not sure why after market sights making for a better shot was mentioned.

If the vials are broken, other than the sight not glowing in low light, what "all sorts of other problems" will result?

While aftermarket sights won't help you overcome poor technique, they can help you with better visibility. As for value, if properly installed, they do add value.

I was thinking of night sites, but I just wanted to keep it simple. I could of lived with the plastic sight if the dots were indented a little and not painted on the surface.

Alright now you say I can go to Brownells where you indicated and that sight will fit right on my SD9VE and SD40VE. What is involved in taking it off and installing?

Not necessarily. The set screw on my M&P came loose and the rear sight simply fell out of the slot on to the floor.

Well I drifted the plastic sight on my SD9VE with a simple delrin punch, but any punch should do and it will come off that way. I'll have to wait and see when my sight comes in, but it should be a simple punch to put it back on. I have a sight pusher, but have only needed to use it for certain guns. If you want to wait until I receive mine, I'll post back up on what was needed to install the M&P sight.

This guy explains a little: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvqnAJQD27E and here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIigiRCHovY

Would the M&P rear sights fit on a Sigma? I've been looking for night sights but the choices are fairly limited. Mainly Meprolight and Trijicon (not the HD). I really like the TFO's, none are listed for the Sigma, SW9VE

Got the M&P rear sight today, old one came off with the delrin punch and the M&P sight went on the same way. I used my sight pusher to slightly adjust it and check with my laser bore sighter only. It didn't have the set screw, but I have a ton of those sitting around and had the perfect size that sits flush with the top when tightened. The set screw can be had at any hardware store in size 5/40 3/16"L or from S&W direct.

I've seen the M&P rear sights listed as fitting the SD on the manufacturer websites. But they all say that the SW9VE requires a different rear sight. From your picture, it looks like you have the SD which proves them right for that part of it. But will that fit the SW?
