I am unsure if i like it or not. Definitely haven't seen another like it, its not horrible just not something i want done to my pistol. Even though its stainless, will it be more prone to rust now that its etched like that?

You asked for it:
This is has to rank in the top 5 for the stupidest things that anyone has ever done to a Smith & Wesson, at least that I can think of right now.
It looks like it has been damaged in the hottest part of a house fire. But for the fact that the frame seems not to have melted, the slide assembly could easily pass for fire damage.
Not to mention that your "acid" etch may have damaged the surface pacification of the stainless steel slide resulting in every little microscopic spec of carbon steel embedding itself and rusting, turning things brown or starting a base coat of rust, or that your "acid" may have damaged the hardening of the metal, thereby causing some type of catastrophic problem in the making (only a metallurgist would know for sure), you have the more practical fact that the warranty is probably now gone forever, the value of this pistol has gone from decent for an entry level gun to less than zero as it may be an unknown liability, and many dealers would not even want to trade for it and thus would not want to re-sell it. Not to mention that it is just plain ugly, poorly done and looks like amateur night at Bubba's kitchen table refinishing company - after Bubba had himself a little too much of granny's acetone based moonshine.
In summary, butt ugly - shockingly so, stupid looking, amateurish, and probably has voided the warranty. Just the most insane thing I have ever seen. It is contemptible and anyone who would ruin a perfectly good firearm in this manner should only be allowed to buy products made by RG or Rohm or one of the other horrible little pot metal companies. This makes me want to have a registry of people who are not eligible to buy any quality firearm because they do this stuff to perfectly good weapons. The best firearms should be reserved for people who will not just destroy them in this fashion.
What did it do to you that you had to abuse it like that?
Sorry, but you asked and you said you could take it.

Its not that bad! ^ Although I'd like to know what look you were trying to achieve, each to their own! I wouldn't say its destroyed, If this were a collectable it be a sin!

Definitely not my cup of tea. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If you like it, that's all that matters. Personalized guns are great. Not everybody who buys a gun is considering selling it at some point down the road, so I say customize away!

Thanks for the feedback guys that's what I was after, laughed at some of the comments.
cthunder I like and then I'm unsure sometimes also.
I put Johnsons paste wax on it and it hasn't rusted in 3 months carrying it in a leather Don Hume holster daily.
The lettering was eaten by the acid and I have since fixed it.
Thank you sir
007 I was trying to go for a camo pattern with the acid.
Yes it is not a collectable.
Thanks 007
Jyezahn I like the way you think sir.
Thanks man
And now Mr. Mccarver I don't agree with most of your post's on here, kind of like the oil water saying.
Anyhow you called me stupid,a bubba,an amature, insane, and said I was drunk at the time I did this.
In the end you apologized so I accept.
It does look like it was in a house fire lol.
It's not ruined by any means.
The acid etching comes off with fine steel wool or scotch brite pad if desired.
My holster wears most of it off after a month and a half so it's not permanent.
I put Johnsons paste wax on it as mentioned earlier and have not had a problem with rust at all.
I agree best or fine weapons shouldn't be screwed with, but this is a $300.00 firearm.
The barrel hasn't been shortened or receiver drilled and tapped or whatever.
It's temporary, but I did polish the whole slide before doing this.
I will probably give it away before trying to sell it, you know because it's so ugly and all.
I don't think I abused it, abuse would be like watching one of those
High Point videos where they pound a bolt down the barrel and shoot the
gun.
Shawn what state do you live in if I may ask ?
Personally I think we would be good not great but good friends.
Thank you sir, 3

I would have posted sooner, but was unsure if i liked it or not, lol. If it comes off that easy, there was probably no damage done to the slide. Seems it may have just "stained" the slide as opposed to etching

Ya I was surprised how easy it came off, but I didn't leave it on there that long either.
I know the longer I left it on the darker it got.
Maybe I should change the title of this thread to stained not etched ?
Good one chevy good one.

One would think if it was "etched" it would be permanent and not come off so easy

Well, you asked for a straight forward response, and you said you could take it, so I gave it to you!
I am glad you read it without sending out a "hit man."
To be honest, personalization of firearms in almost any manner is just not my cup of tea. I used to cringe when I would see St. Louis Police Officers back in the 60s who would put these butt-ugly brass grip plates or stag grips on their Model 10s. I have a terrible distaste for stag grips!
I freely admit my shortcomings in this matter of personalizing one's firearms, but just so you know the background, I have found that customization rarely does anything but reduce the value of the gun. If you are not selling, then no problem, but in my experience, even professional custom work by well-known gunsmiths does not pay off on later sale or trade.
If you had not asked for input, I would have only privately cringed.
Since you asked, I felt like I could not let it go unsaid!!!!
I have one friend here who is always doing stuff to brand new S&W's and I refer to him as the "Butcher," so you are not alone in my criticism. I give equal treatment - I usually dislike most of this kind of thing.
The Butcher and I are friends despite that difference however, and if you are as good natured as you seem in your post, then I am quite certain we would be good friends - we would rib each other about stuff, but we would be friends.
I am happy to make your acquaintance.
If I can ever be of service to you about any kind of questions you may have, I will help you as much as I can - as will almost everyone on this excellent forum.
Welcome to you and your acid etch gun!!!!!!!
Best regards,
Shawn

So, I would guess that black buffalo horn grips and a polished aluminum Tyler T-Grip on my nickel-plated S&W Model 37 would really crank you up!

I recognize my own limitations in this regard. In your case, at least the aluminum grip adapter is the same color (sort of) as the revolver, so I can live with that.
Black Buffalo Horn? Not so much!
