Default Pitting on slide breech face

I have noticeable pitting right under my firing pin hole on my slide breech face.

The pistol is a SD40VE I purchased brand new in Dec. 2012.

I've shot maybe 5 boxes of factory rounds through it either speer or federal only brass cased.

Can anybody check their slide for pitting in this area for me cause I can't believe this is from shooting just 500 rounds.

I never noticed this before so I don't know if it came this way or not.

Might try to polish this a little not sure yet it looks kind of deep.

I clean this thing every time I shoot it .

It's across the whole bottom of the slide not in a circular pattern or anything.

Can't post a pic. yet son has my camera.

Thanks 3

I polished it up some but really don't want to go too deep.

The pitting is on the whole breech face from just under the firing pin hole.

It's all across the slide and under the extractor also.

Nobody has this, am I special ?

Mine is not pitted. I wouldn't polish it any more than you already have though, could cause issues. I don't see how pitting on the breech face would cause any problems, so I'd think it to be purely cosmetic, and not something to worry about.

The problem is I'm getting a lot of brass build up inside the gun.

When the round comes out of the mag it drags on the breech face and goes under the extractor.

With these pits on the breach the gun gets brass all inside of it and the mag.

Also had some FTfeed on the last outing, never had that before.

Well since I polished it some the brass build up pretty much stopped.

Shot 2 boxes, looks much better and ran flawless.

Still don't understand where the pitting came from.

Interesting, I guess the pitting is worse that I thought. Sounds like you have a temp fix for a relatively minor issue, depending on how well you clean it. Might be worth a call to S&W to see if the pitting might be a result of a bad batch of steel... surface pitting could be a sign of internal air pockets maybe?
