NO! I can finally say SD9VE/SD40VE barrels do not swap!
I finally have both SD9VE and SD40VE guns. There has been alot of discussion on here about barrel swapping the two. I pulled the slides off both last night and tried it first hand. Its a no go gents. The front of the barrel is a perfect fit, but the back of the barrel where the little sight hole is is wider on the 40 than the 9. If i have time later tonight i will post pics of the difference. You would have to purchase the slide assembly and barrel to make this work which i can only guess would be close to the price of just buying another SDVE. And heres a pic of the two just for the hell of it

Ya what's wrong with you.
I know S&W quoted me $85.00 + tax for a 9 barrel.

The 9 barrel in the 40 slide is too loose and the 40 barrel in the 9 slide wont even fit. Also the mags wont even interchange. There is a keyway cutout on the side of the mags. The 9 fits in the 40 frame but will pull out with out hitting the mag release and the 40 mag won't even fit in the 9 frame. To put it simply. It dont fing work at all!!!

Not a problem, i know it has been discussed ALOT and i finally had the chance to try it first hand and show why it doesn't work. The guns are so similar yet so different. I know more peeps will post and ask the question again so just send them the link to this thread

The keyway in the mag. pic. has nothing to do with fitting to the gun.
They look like their the same length but the .40 rounds are bigger so it throws off the numbers on the mag.
Measure the mag. catch on the other side of the mag. from the top down.

The 3rd Gen guns also had features preventing insertion of the wrong magazines.
The sooner S&W does this to the M&P line, the better off we will be.

The SD9VE is my fathers gun now, so it will be a little while before i can mic the mags. The mag release opening may be different, but there is also something else preventing the mag from inserting. Either that key way i pointed out or the mag may be just physically bigger in size as well. The 40 mag was tight going into the 9 frame. May be a couple weeks before i can check that out. Plus i got a new bike so I've been out late putting miles on that

Hello Gents
I've been reading this forum anonymously, have finally registered.
I have a SD40VE, wife has a SD9VE. I just bought a 9mm de-mill weapon to shoot cheaper ammo. Received in the package was everything but the frame. I found the slide, barrel, ejector and mag release are the four differences between the .40 & 9mm. I tested this by completely swapping the frames. Within the magazines the followers are different, but that's it.
With the ejector & mag release being different, its more difficult than I expected to switch from .40cal carry to 9mm training. http://smith-wessonforum.com/images/smilies/frown.gif
Thanks

So are the barrels different widths or are the slides different widths.
Maybe they are both different ?

It's the barrel hood that is different.
