Galloway stainless steel guide rods
My sd9ve comes from the factory with a 17 pound polymer guide rod. Galloway offers stainless steel guide rods at 15, 17 and 20 pounds. They tell you the 15 pound is for light loads only. I presume that would be for something like the 50 grain aluminum hollow points my LGS sells. What would the 20 pound be for, since I can't shoot +P in my sd? And what good in general would a stainless steel guide be? I know I am gonna drive y'all crazy with all my newbie questions.

Not a chance. I answer newbie questions all the time.
1. You can shoot +P in your SD. RTFM.
2. The 20# would be for a 147gr loaded hot with, say, HS6, for example. I don' shoot such in an SD.
3. There is no need to use anything other than the stock recoil rod/spring assembly for any commercial 115/124 gr load that meets SAAMI standards, and that includes +P. (not +P+, which has NO SAAMI standard). Galloway makes fine products, but you don't "need" theirs for stock applications.
Buy a spare stock assembly for $8 and relax. You have to look at the rod/spring every time you clean it anyway.

Thanks for your input. The last thing I want to do is waste money on something I don't really need, but having said that, I like to know all my options.

There's a lot of debate about polymer vs steel guide rods, and while there have been some instances in which polymer guide rods have broken or shown wear, by and large it comes down to personal preference. I for one don't care for polymer guide rods, so if possible, I replace them with steel guide rods on any pistols I own, and use the stock recoil spring.
I put a Galloway stainless steel recoil spring assembly in my SD9VE, using the stock spring weight.

Obviously, you don't NEED it, otherwise it'd be stock. But if you like the look, and the fact that it's stainless steel, knock yourself out. I got one and I like it a lot.

Ok, I thought for sure I was gonna prove you wrong on this, but sure enough, it only says that more frequent servicing would be likely using +P I thought it had said not to use +P. Now I am gonna re-read the whole thing and see if I missed anything else. Thanks again for the straight scoop.

I hear you. This is my first handgun. I have been criticized for buying the sd9ve instead of a Glock. Comments saying that if I had gotten a glock, i would not have to do these upgrades. But I disagree. It's fun to shoot the weapon. But it's just as fun to me to personalize it and learn about what it out there for mods, maybe choosing some and rejecting others.

I think I will get the stock spring weight as well should I buy one. Thanks.

Let me guess...the people making these comments either own Glocks (or no guns at all.)
If you check on the internet, there are trigger/spring kits for Glocks too...as well as a bunch of other accessories. You will also pay about $200 more for a Glock.
You could always tell the Glock fanboys that you spent some of the $200 you saved on some OPTIONAL accessories, but you didn't have to spend money on extractors, ejectors, and recoil assemblies to solve cycling and ejection problems and BTF (brass to face.)

Yeah, a LOT of Glock shooters customize. Check out Glockworx, ZEV Technologies. They do full customizations.

Gallowway SS replacement Rod
I just purchased a few days ago the new S&W SD40VE.. I ordered the Galloway replace SS steel Rod w/20# spring. When I installed it the spring sticks out past the barrel about 1/8 to 1/4 in.. looks stupid.. Has anybody had issues like this ?

What do you mean the spring sticks out past the barrel? A pic may help here. And why would you go from the factory 18# to the 20# spring? I ask because you may encounter issues.

Mine does too, on my SD9VE...just the button head (or whatever it's called) but not any part of the spring/assembly itself.

Ok so the rod sticks out. I would say it should not be like that. Maybe Galloway has a reason for this or they cut it to proper length. Sometimes aftermarket parts aren't the best and there is nothing wrong with the factory guide rod.

Galloway Guide Rods
Let me tell you, I been having the best customer service from Debbie at Galloway. I been working with them on the Rod size for the lastest S&W SD40VE .
AS commented above, the one they sent was too long and the button end stuck out of the slide.
The stock factory was 2in & 940/1000th.... the one they sent was 2in & 975/1000th.
They made one and sent it out same day. There is a difference with the older SD's .

Galloway say's their guide rod fit's SD VE models and the factory weight is 17#'s.
Sounds like Galloway has taken measurements off the older models,
both in rod length and spring weight, see below compared to Wolff.
Now Wolff has 2 different guide rods, 1 fit's Sigma full size
models disc. in 99 and the other 1 is for current 4 inch models.
Wolff spring rates are different also between the older and newer models.
Seems like Wolff got it right and Galloway didn't.

I think Galloway got it wrong in more ways than that. Their so-called 17# recoil spring that I had in my SD40VE felt more like the Wolff 14# spring that I once put in my M&P9FS.

Eric from Galloway
FYI.. Eric just called me to talk about the Guide Rods being a tat to long on the new S&W SD-VE's..
He recognized the issue and will be making new Rods 30/1000 shorter. He asked that anyone with one sticking out to far , to get with him for a free replacement & free mailer to send the other back..
Peace
