Default Transporting my SD40VE

I am confused about the law re: transporting my S&W. I know i can legally take it to the range w/o a cc permit. My question is, if traveling thru LA to TX, can I legally carry the handgun in my vehicle (unloaded of course) and not concealed? If so, does that mean it cannot be in the glovebox but must be visible in the console? I've read the MS law and, as I understand it, the vehicle is an extension of my home but I wanted to get a second opinion. Other than for travel, I have no need for a CC permit.

Thanks

You have to look at each state's laws. Rules about vehicle storage vary by state, city and county and you need to know before traveling.

The site handgunlaw.us provides summaries and links to individual state law. READ the state provided information.
You absolutely have to comply with the law of the state you are in, and there is NO universal rule.
What is good in Oklahoma can get you arrested in Kansas, for example.

I don't know about Louisiana, but in Texas you don't have to have a CHL to carry a handgun in your car (at least for Texas residents.) The gun doesn't have to be unloaded, but it does have to be concealed, which means the gun is not visible or in plain sight. A holster is not considered concealment, since part of the gun would be visible. (I don't know if a pistol rug that fully encloses the gun would be considered concealed.) You can have a loaded handgun in your console, glove box, under the seat, or anywhere it is not readily visible to someone outside the vehicle. When I am in my car, my gun is in the console right beside my seat. If I have to leave my gun in the car, like to go inside somewhere that carry is prohibited, then it goes into a gun safe in my car.

As others have mentioned, check the laws in your state, and the states you are traveling through and to.
