SW9F Broken spring?
OK I bought this gun used and only have 150 rounds through it and took it apart to clean it today (after about 70-80 rounds) and the recoil spring under the barrel broke, it sits on a plastic rod to keep it compressed and there is a plastic cap that goes over this rod, it stays together when I press it back but it will not hold the spring under tension, so I just got off the phone with S&W and they are sending a new one ($6?), any one else have this break, how common is this, should I get more than one or two?
thanks
James

I always keep a spare, since I use Sigmas for loaners and trainers, and I have used exactly one in 15 years due to breakage. When I sell one of my well-used Sigmas, I always put a new recoil spring in it just because. S&W recommends replacement after 5,000 rounds.

The problem with the aftermarket steel rods for the Sigmas is that they require the non-captive piano wire springs, which are far inferior to the stock flat-wound recoil springs. So while the steel rod will lat forever, you have to change the piano wire springs MORE often.
So you can spend $30 for an aftermarket setup that is LESS reliable, or just buy a spare stock assembly for $8 and find something else to worry about!

In my experience, this is exceedingly rare. Were it me, at that price, I would order and extra, just in case. "Wasting" money on an extra usually guarantees that I never have that problem again.

the rod came apart, there is a plastic rod and plastic cap (they fit together with a snap lock) but it will not hold the tension of the spring any more it firs together perfectly with out the spring and I see nothing wrong with it, but when I compress the spring on that rod and then put the cap on it it just "springs apart" I ordered a new one from S&W just not here yet, I have only had my permit a month or so and this is my 1st hand gun, now that is it out of commission, I don't like not having a "working " gun in the house, never needed it before....but...so I will be looking into a 22L semi for a back up (I have lots of ammo for that and my wife can handle it with more confidences) so is that an Arsenal?

Galloway Precision sells complete recoil spring assemblies for $30. The guide rod is made of stainless steel.

According to the government and police I would say yes.
Ya never have enough guns or ammo unless your swimming or on fire.
That's my belief on the subject.

http://www.smith-wesson.com/wcsstore...ist_Retail.pdf
S&W home page under parts list (pistol).
Scroll down till you find your model.
It's about 3/4's of the way down the page.
I think it's # 27 on the list under your model.
They sent you one for a .40 or the compact version of 9mm, I believe.

Ok S&W sent the wrong spring (to short, they are sending another 3-6 weeks), so I tried Wolf and they sent a spring and rod but how do I compress it to fit?

The small end of the spring goes against the guide rod flange. The big end goes on the slide recoil spring counterbore. Now slowly push the guide rod into the spring, coil by coil. You can do it. It's not hard.

You need to get a piece of "Dowel" or some other type of rod. With the guide rod in the spring the dowel needs to be slightly less diameter than the guide rod and stick out the other end of the spring about a 1/2". Now with the dowel, rod, and spring insert it as you would the factory assembly. The guide rod will push the dowel out with out getting caught on the coils.
If you know how a P22 goes back together it is the same concept.

Take down spring sd9ve.
I was at the range a little while ago. Having replaced springs with ones purchased from Apex, aiming with the extended take down plate I experienced the issue of spent casings not ejecting properly. Trouble shooting, I went to put the original take down plate back in. The spring however sprung lol. Unable to find. Two questions if anyone could assist. 1. My manual has no part number, so if anyone knows where I could find it would you share that info? 2. Would taking a large magnet in the area I was be any use? Is the spring magnetic i guess is my question.
