Question magazine rattle fix?

I bought a sd40ve in June. I've noticed that the magazines make a rattling noise when loaded. Is there any type of fix for this? Do I need to call Smith & Wesson for replacement magazines? I'm open to suggestions. Its very annoying carrying NY sd40ve cuz when I walk I Can hear it rattling.

The fix is to switch to a gun that uses a single-stack mag. A slight rattle in some double-stack mags is quite common -- you might well find one rattles while another apparently identical one does not. It is all dependent upon slightly varying tolerances between mag parts, which sometimes combine to create a mag with a rattle. As long as your mags function there is no problem to be addressed.

There's no reason to call S&W. It's just the way the mags are. My Browning Hi Power 9mm mags rattle when fully loaded too. If I reduce the number of rounds in the mag they quit rattling. Some ammo rattles more too. Longer bullets (usually this equates to heavier bullets) reduce rattle some.

Best Regards,
ADP3

Wasn't a couple of posters saying they tried the SW series mags in the SD and reported no rattling?

I know my SW mags do not rattle at all, I don't have an SD, but it i on the list.

Don't know about the SW mags.

Somebody posted about switching out to a glock spring, for a fix.

My SD9VE mags rattle sometimes when cartridges aren't seated as far back to the rear after loading them, I don't know if it might be the same with the 40 but I just slap the back of the magazine into my palm once or twice while I fill them. I haven't noticed any rattling from any of my 5 different model and age magazine collection: the two originals, a new ice scraper Sigma and two used SW9Fs. None of them make a tic afterward, after a round has been chambered the whole gun is rock solid silent as a crypt. These are all 9mm of grains 115-158.

Buy some SW mags they dont rattle for me.
I took the SD floor plate and swapped them. You dont have to though base plate has nothing to do with the rattle.

The spring in the SW mags is slightly longer thus providing more upwards pressure than the SD mags reducing the rattle and in some cases like mine eliminating it all together.

I just fixed mine tonight with a Glock part.... I replaced the follower with one from a G22(Lone Wolf Distributors - Product Detail - Glock Follower M/22-24,27,35 - $3.48). No more rattle. I plan on making a video of the fix for youtube later.

Default How I fixed my SD40 magazine rattle

This is an old post, but I'll add to it anyway.

After studying the magazine without the spring and follower in it, with and without ammo, I decided that the reason it was rattling was because the follower "ramp" side wasn't long enough to reach the loose side of the ammo when in the magazine. When one round was removed, the positions changed and the magazine didn't rattle. I am OCD and want to hold all the ammo it was designed for without the rattle.

I took out the spring and follower and then, using a dremel with a sanding drum, I ground down the area where the shell casing rests which effectively "raised" the pointed ramp side on the other side of the follower. It didn't take much, and after reassembly, my magazine doesn't rattle now at all...no matter how many rounds are in it.

I am no gunsmith, and I haven't shot the gun yet, but I feel like it is a good fix. Would love to hear feedback if anyone else tries it. I figured worse case I would have to go out and buy the Glock follower if I messed it up.

Attached are a couple of pictures to illustrate....

I may just pick up a couple of those Glock mag followers. My 14 round mags rattle after loading them no matter how much I try to seat the rounds. They keep rattling until I download them to 9 rounds. $10 and change for both shipped is pretty decent.

My guess is that the tapered casing used on the 9mm Parabellum round could cause the nose to rattle in some instances.

Well I pretty much fixed mine. Now they only rattle with all 14 rounds in them. But as soon as one round it out, they are both quiet as church mice. Before they rattled constantly until I had them down to 9rounds. I just sanded about 1/16" from the bottom tabs of both follower. This allowed me to have just enough room to press the rounds up and down a few times after loading them to get them settled...

Joshua,

There is a slight amount of "play" between your slide and frame.

If you look closely, when you insert a magazine you will see that it pushes up the slide release lever a little which then comes into contact with the slide which is stopping your rattle.

When you eject the magazine, the lever spring pushes the lever back down and your gun will rattle again.

Doc

I hope this Glock part fixes the rattle and they function perfectly in the SD40VE because I just ordered these Glock G22 followers to try out due to your input here on the forum.

I have a 915 with 4 magazines, one of which rattles when there's a full 15 rounds in it. It still feeds fine and is good for range time. I keep a piece of duct tape on the base plate to identify it. The other 3 magazines are fine. When I carry I use one of them. Problem solved.

I suppose one could try to replace the follower or something in order to correct the issue.

Incidentally, the Mec-Gar magazines for this 9mm frame are superb!

I do not believe this is violating the rules to say:

Mec-Gar magazines are just plain awesome!

So smooth, so reliable. I slowly am replacing every magazine with Mec-Gar.

My Kel-Tec P11 uses a S&W Mdl 59-patterned magazine ( 10 round). When I first got it, both magazines rattled a great deal. After researching the issue a extensively, I learned that this was common and correctable by placing the magazine lengthwise in a vise and squeezing it just a very small amount. In my case, this worked brilliantly. I have used these magazines with nary a rattle or a mag-related malfunction for 18 years. I might add that I also bought a Safariland stainless steel 15 rounder that does not rattle at all...really nice QC.

Default The Lonewolf Glock G22 follower fail!

As previously stated in this thread, I went ahead and ordered the Glock G22 .40 followers that were posted here in this thread with the link as well to them, so as to make sure I did order the correct ones that the individual was suggesting to get, that would fix the rattle of the SD40VE magazines. Well here is what happened when installing them in my SD40VE magazines, they go in easily and seem to fit but one thing I noticed was they do not sit up high enough in the SD40VE magazines to hold the slide lock up on the last round and also your bullet will sit in a slightly different position on the last round as well, so long story short if they even do function properly in the gun, on every last round the slide will close and not lock back like it normally should with the factory followers. So this fix is a fail in my opinion, but they did take away the rattle with a fully loaded magazine with the gun loaded, the funny thing is they still rattle when they are out of the gun but not when loaded and put in the gun lol! I'm not sure I even want to take the chance of firing the gun with the Glock G22 followers in lol. I may put one in and give it a try and see if it functions properly in the gun in just one of my magazines later, if they do function and fire fine with no ftf or fte, the down fall is your gonna have to be ok with the slide not locking back after every last round. I'll let you all know if I try it out.

Joshua,

slide/frame play is perfectly normal and essential.

After all the slide has to "slide" freely.

The difference is in how much.

On some guns it is so slight as to not be noticeable, on some it can feel like quite a bit.

That it shoots awesome is a good indicator that the amount in yours is fine.

My SD40VE has the most play of my autoloaders, but shoots and feels and size is so nice, it is my carry.

Yea there was no more rattle when I just replaced the followers with the Glock G22 ones posted in this thread but in my SD40VE magazines those followers do not sit up high enough to lock the slide back on the last round and the last round sits low in the magazine due to that as well so its not a good fix in my opinion. Has your gun functioned perfectly with the glock followers in your magazines?? Is it loading your rounds like normal everytime even on the last round?

Some double stacks rattle, some don't, and not all of them do it all the time. Depends on the angle of the follower as it takes on the rounds and the torque of the spring as it is depressed, along with the way the loaded rounds line up against each other. No worries. It happens . . .

Its just a annoyance more than anything else in the SD40VE mags, and if their was or is a fix to stop the rattle with the gun functioning flawlessly still, well that would be great. Like I said before I bought the glock followers and they do stop the rattle but they sit in a completely different position in the mags and will not lock the slide back on the last round. It annoys me most of all because out of all my double stack mags they are the only ones that rattle lol! I want to know if the people here who have done this so called fix have fired their guns with the glock followers and what were the results, if the only issue is the slide not locking back on the last rnd then thats not that huge of a deal. Im more concerned with feeding issues.

I picked up my SD9VE last night, never shot it yet, and both the slide and the mag rattles. This is not common for other double-stacks, at least not for Glock and Beretta. It is just the way the gun is built, I assume...

Interesting. My side doesn't rattle and none of my 4 magazines has ever rattled.

earthtone31, has pretty well sized up the situation. It is normal
for this double stack mag. and you should just learn to live with it! "If it ain't broke......."
