I know that this has been talked about before on here, I searched but still didn't find exactly what I was looking for. I just recently got an original SW9M, I know it's an original because I got it from my grandfather and he still had the original receipt from 95'. Anyways he never shot it to my knowledge, so I take it to the range as I just received my CCW in Ohio and wanted this to be my carry weapon. I couldn't even get the gun to load the first bullet into the chamber on a full magazine. Finally when I got one of the bullets to load every 3rd or 4th bullet would stove-pipe or not chamber. Did a little research and found that people who were sending them back 5-6 years ago to S&W were getting back either full size sigma's (don't want) or were receiving 908's because S&W wanted them off the streets. Thing is that they don't sell the 908's or the full sized sigma's on there website anymore. Now I want to know if anyone recently has sent one in, what are they saying? I tried calling and the representative just gave me the run around about every gun being on a case by case basis. I love the size and feel of this little 9, feels great in my hand, but I'm not going to carry a gun that is unreliable that could get me killed.

tl;dr What is S&W currently offering as replacement when you send in your SW9M for "repair"?

Did you try a diffrent magazine? Did you take it apart and clean it before you shot it? Even though its never been shot its been in the box for 17 years. Worse case call them back up and tell them to send you a shipping label they will fix it theyve got great customer service. If not they will replace it with a new SD.

I wouldn't count on the replacement coming from Smith. I contacted them today with the same problems described by several other posts (poor quality, unreliable, etc). I emailed Smith Customer Service to arrange for a potential replacement. I was told that the warranty only extends to the original purchaser. They did offer that I could send the pistol to their gunsmiths, at my cost to have it worked on (also at my cost). I expected more from Smith and Wesson.

I just purchased the SD9VE and was reading through the information given with the gun and it states the warranty is only guaranteed for the original owner of the weapon.

Depending on how much it was cost for potential repairs, you may be better off buying a new SD9VE. $299 at Academy Sports.

What exactly do you expect S&W to do? Their warranty is to the original purchaser and they have the best warranty service in the gun industry. Frequently, the will go above and beyond even though they are not required to do so.

You should have just told them you needed service and then sent it in and let them decide what to offer you. When you start out "trying to arrange a replacement" that just never goes over well.

So I thought everyone would like to know that I ended up sending it to S&W and they sent me back a M&P 9 shield. I am very happy with it so far, haven't had a chance to take it to the range yet but I have a feeling it will become my new carry weapon. So any of you have an old sigma laying around that is a doorstop, send it in and you might be able to get yourself a shield as well.

If I might, Gentlemen? I too always liked the idea of a small, flat pocket 9mm. With the Advent of the SW9M, I thought that while ugly, what a neat "pocket rocket". At the time S&W offered them, I unfortunately was unable to purchase from lack of funds. 12/14 years later, I stumbled into a SW9M new in the box at a decent price. I purchased it, took it home, gave it a fast once over, and proceeded to the range for break-in and familiarization. Oh Boy! The 9M was a complete Dud! Even with several different loads and 3 mags, I could not keep this little pistol running. The failure to fire rounds out numbered the rounds that actually fired. I was very disappointed in this little pistol.
Being a S&W armorer, I contact S&W to discuss solutions for the 9M. I was told at that time(and this was about 8-10 years ago.) that the SW9M had been obsoleted by S&W about 3-4 years after they were introduced, due to many, many problems the small little gun had incurred. The S&W rep informed me that no parts existed for the gun and repairs were not conducted on any 9M's that were returned for that reason. The S&W rep asked me if I liked the 908 9mm that S&W was manufacturing at that time, and I replied I did indeed. Subsequently, about 3 weeks after I sent my 9M to S&W, a brand new 908 arrived at my doorstep. Good old S&W, they do take care of their customers.
Now, will they do the same for anyone with a malfunctioning SW9M today? I have no idea. But, considering that the 9M is not repairable, and after what mOstwanted has informed us, it looks like they will.

I do know if you have an original Sigma, and the frame cracks, S&W will make that good, as well. What they will do to do so is up to them, but S&W does take care of it's customer base. Of course recently, given that the Socialists in Washington are trying to disarm the American populace for control issues(Anyone who thinks otherwise is a naive fool!!), the current demand for firearms in this country is huge! I know S&W is running 3 shifts full tilt, 7 days a week. They are overwhelmed and overworked trying to keep up with demand. Please keep that in mind when dealing with customer service. You may be talking to someone that knows almost nothing about the product line and problems. He(she) may be just a body answering the phone. Just saying...

I know the issue has been resolved and my question is a little late but to all who say "warranty is for the first owner". How would S&W know? Unless someone actually sent in the silly little registration card i could be the 15th owner and as far as S&W knows im the first

All 3 of the SW9VEs that I own came with all papers, including the original receipt...and the warranty cards as well. All of these were pre owned prior to my purchasing them.

So the question remains...how would S&W know I wasn't the original owner if I have the original receipts??

I just bought a sw9m from a old friend his dad gave it to him 10 years ago. I have no papers or anything on the gun. It has the same thing wrong with it misfires. Will Smith and Wesson still send me a new one in its place or is that just for the first owner of the gun.

You can call S&W and tell them what you got. Their warranty says for the original purchaser of the weapon only, but they may still warranty it. They have very good customer service

I had a used SW9M with a cracked frame, I was not the original purchaser. When I called S&W I simply told them the truth, my gun had a cracked frame. They didn't ask me any questions at all, just sent me a shipping label.

Several weeks went by and I have a brand new SD9VE. Couldn't be happier with it.

Glad you scored a Shield as those are by all accounts sweet guns.

Glad we BOTH scored a Company that stands behind their Warranties from what I've seen above and beyond.

I will always go S&W before other brands due to this positive experience as well as their fine products that I've used over the years.

I've owned one of these for about ten years and fired over 300 rounds during that time using three different mags. Unlike most contributors here I have had no problems with reliability. It has fired +P and ball ammo. I don't shoot it often due to the distinct recoil of the straight blowback operation. My carry gun is a Kahr PM40 which handles recoil surprisingly well.

I actually feel the little SW9m was ahead of its time in 1989. After each firing I pull the rear pin and field strip, clean, and lube well. It is a great pocket pistol in a pinch with no levers or safety to catch on anything. I knew a guy who had one in 380 that never worked reliably.

I picked up a copy of the Bruce Willis movie, "Mercury Rising" recently. He's an FBI agent and his carry gun is a SW9M. It must have been the only one that worked right.
I looked it up on one of those movie gun websites and they just say he had a Sigma, but it looked awful compact when he drew it.
The stories in here should be made available to more gun buyers out there. How many other companies would take care of you like S&W does? Not many, I'm sure.
