Default Uses for SD9VE

I was wondering what role your SD9's are being used for? Is it Home defense, everyday carry or just to take to the range? If you are carrying it what kind of rig are you using?

My SD9 is for Home Defense as I keep in a rapid access safe by the bed, loaded with Hornady Critical Duty with the second mag beside it.

I also use my SD9 for EDC in an IWB hybrid holster from FOXX holsters. I wear it at 4 o'clock and tuck my shirt when I am not wearing a coat or long cover garment.

I thought it would be interesting to see how others are using the SD9. Happy Holidays!

My SD9VE is used primarily for home defense. I also carry it in the car when we are traveling. Shield 9mm is the carry gun (until there is a Shield 45. )

Merry Christmas,
The SD9 is strictly a HD and vehicle carry. Great low cost firearm that fits my hand well..
I find it bigger than I want for my EDC. For that I prefer the Ruger SR9C and LC9.

I wouldn't even buy that model . I've seen way to many fte and ftf at the range . Just spend the extra money on an M&p which ever cal u perfer . If u want a great all around gun I'd get a m&p compact or shield . Or if the m&p are a little high for ur buget . Try the Ruger SR series

Seems like a strange place for someone to post that does not even own the gun under consideration. It is amazing how much people can "know" without owning or using a certain gun. My round count is around 1,000 give or take a few and have not hade the first FTE or FFE, I trust my life with it. I have considered the M&P shield though to use in certain carry situations because of it's smaller footprint, but even then I would not make it my primary.

Mine is for defense and casual target shooting....fired a couple thousand rounds now without trouble except....it does not like ammo under 165 grain.... I shoot mostly 180 and 165 jhps with no troubles..... I have a Glock, a Beretta, 2 different Sigs, an M&P9c, and a 3rd gen 5906, and I never feel under gunned when travelling with the SW40VE....and it is very accurate. I found that the Bianchi accumold made for the Glock 23/19 fits perfect for both the SD and the 5906 and carry them when hiking or biking in the mountains....enjoy!

Last edited by mikeruns; 03-08-2014 at 10:50 AM. Reason: corrected model nomenclature #, mine is a SW40VE.....not the SD40VE

That isn't consistent with the preponderance of reports and experience here. The SDVE series guns are generally very reliable.

It's difficult to assess a make/model of gun just by what you see happening at the range...especially if it's an isolated incident. The shooter may be limp-wristing, may not have maintained the gun properly, or there may be a problem with the individual gun (which can happen to any make/model.)

Unless there have been a number of malfunctions in more than one gun, with experienced shooters, I'd be reluctant to condemn a gun based on just an observation at the range. Of course, relating first hand experience by actually owning and shooting the gun is the best review.

i had a few FT feed, polished feed ramp and have had no issues with it since. its reliable enough to be my EDC.... that says how much trust i put in this SDVE to protect my life. just because you see something in a range and the shooters are having issues doesnt mean the gun is bad or the series. as mentioned above

I am glad to here that there are others that feel the same way that I do about giving an opinion about a gun you have no expereince with. I am also happy to see the confidence that you all have in you SD's

Mine must be defective in about 2 weeks its had 800 rounds by me and others shooting it and no malfunctions of any kind and I and the others who shot it were actually hitting the target , reliably , but then what do I or anyone else who actually owns the SD or Sigma series know about them .

send it in to S&W tell them its working too well, see if they cant make it misfeed or something everytime

seriously for the price i got a much better pistol than i was expecting. i have no issues with mine, i love that there is no secondary safety. just point and pull the trigger and it will go bang everytime. also on a side note i did have issues in the cold (im in northern michigan at times) it ended up being my cleaner and lube. started using m7 pro cleaner and oil on recommendation from a local LEO friend. no issues in the cold since

Well, I don't own one either - I have M&Ps. But... my brother was looking for an inexpensive range and HD pistol, and I talked him into one. Several hundred rounds and its been flawless. A couple days ago we used it to plink away with some Tula. My thought is, if it shoots that OK, it will be good with most anything else. From what I've seen, its a great inexpensive pistol that can fill a variety of roles. Enjoy your pistol and use it how it fits your needs best - it will serve you well.

Given the trigger, its a house gun period. I love the grip, have experienced no failures, generally like it. When I am not rushed I shoot it accurately at close range 7M and less.

That S&W saw the need to produce a U.S. made sidearm that would compete with lower priced imports is my take. That they would build it one size fits all in terms of trigger compliance, again my take, makes sense.

One should I believe accept the SD9 VE for what it is or leave it be. Mine was $325 out the door, about what I would expect to pay for a 5 shot 3" Rossi. An excellent value.

Both my SD9VE's are 100% reliable with anything you stuff in their magazines.

They're good all round guns; use varies from range, to truck gun, to concealed carry, to loaners and anything in-between.

Depending on their use, they ride in Blackhawk Serpa's; Galco or Bulldog leather belt holsters, Uncle Mike's #16 IWB, or Black Hawk #3 pocket holster.

I agree with you. I do tend to "tinker" with 1911s, but even then it's mainly accessorizing...things like grips, screws, etc. I also have had trigger jobs done, since they do have a thumb and a grip safety. On a gun without external safeties, I like a heavier trigger. Of course, it's up to each person what he or she does with their guns...I'm just stating my preference.

I paid $289 for one on sale, which made it $313 out the door. I paid $319 for a second one, or $346 out the door. I don't know why I say "out the door" since I've NEVER left the gun shop without buying ammo (if they have any), magazines, mag pouches, additional cleaning supplies, and even jerky or other essential gun related stuff.

Mine sits in a closet, and sometimes I take it out and shoot it. I can't afford enough ammo to practice regularly with it, so I can't hit the broad side of a barn with it.

Mine is the original SD9 with the black slide. It still looks almost brand new, despite having about 500 rounds through it.

Wish ammo was cheaper, as I'd shoot it a lot more.

Have the SD40VE. Now an EDC + HD. 1000 rnds thru it, not 1 problem. Accurate enough 3" 10 shot group at 10yds is pretty normal. That will stop most threats. Enjoy your SD9VE.

SD9VE was the first handgun I purchased. I ended up selling it, but wish I had not. It ate everything I fed it, and never gave me one ounce of trouble. At that time, I wanted a single action CZ, and sold it to help finance the buy. I do like the M&P line better, but who doesn't? Anyway, I used the SD9VE as a nightstand weapon and open carry as I didn't have a CC permit at the time.

I haven't had a SD9 in a while, so this is from memory...but, the SD9 had a black slide, front night sight, the rear sight was metal with two white dots (I think), and a slightly better trigger pull than the Sigma. The SD9VE has a stainless slide, metal front sight with a white dot, polymer rear sight with two white dots painted on (not recessed into the sight), and a better trigger than the SD9 (I do have a SD9VE, and the trigger is long, smooth, and about 8 pounds or less.)

The SD9 sold for around $400 when they came out here, and the SD9VE routinely sells for a little over $300. Academy Sports has them on sale right now for $289. Any sights that will fit the M&P 9 will fit the SD9VE.

Yes, mine was on sale for $399 at Academy. Not sure, but I think "regular price" was probably $449.

So, the SD9VE triggers are actually a little better? That's interesting. I wonder what about them Smith would have changed? Mine has a pretty smooth trigger, but the pull is very long. Have not measured it with a scale.

For me it's all of the above. I plan on having a lot of range fun with it for sure.

Default SD9VE uses...

Home defense/self defense, travel companion (car gun) when driving longer distances, most of all as a plinker/fun gun with cast bullets.

Show it to the Glock guys and say "Try this, it's better".

Seriously, full-size home defense option for my wife since I'll have a 12 gauge.

I think the guide rod in the SD9 is metal, and plastic in the SD9VE.... Sights are different, as well as a better trigger on the SD9...

It sure is a sweet easy shooter!

Anyone who cries about this trigger needs to take up knitting or something.

in defense of many, they may not like the long pull similar to a DA revolver. what they fail to realize is that there is NO SAFETY on this firearm. the heavy long pull is the safety mechanism. yes it has a learning curve, but once conquered it is a hell of a firearm. last thing i want is to be funbling with a safety or not being able to disengage when i need it most in a life or death situation. that alone is the biggest factor in why i carry my SD daily

-That is a big ol' BINGO there!! Our pistols don't have any safeties, hence the need for a heavier trigger pull. Could you imagine carrying a 1911 cocked with no safety what-so-ever, and having a light 3 lb trigger pull? That's a recipe for disaster there! I'll keep my so-called "horrible 8 lb trigger pull" and have piece of mind that it won't go off unless my finger is inside the trigger guard pressing the trigger back...

L8R,
Matt

This is true...and the other thing that I don't think that many stop to consider is that this pistol was designed as a self-defense (hence the SD designation) firearm, not a target gun. Yes, I know it's important to be accurate even at close range, and yes, I know you can still miss a man-sized target at close range, so that's why you practice to master the trigger as it is, and insure that you have acceptable accuracy. In most cases, if you are involved in a self-defense shooting, it's going to be at close range...in fact, if the range is very far, it may become questionable as to your need to shoot.

I've gone back and forth over the trigger/spring kits, and I just don't feel comfortable with them...better sights, yes; extended take down lever, yes; even a stainless steel recoil rod, yes; but, for ME (and YMMV) I want to leave the fire control group stock. It will definitely serve my intended purpose, and I don't have to worry about inducing malfunctions or invalidating the warranty. Again, this is MY preference, and no criticism of anyone who decides differently is meant or implied.

When Bersa first introduced the BP9CC, I bought one...and it had the lightest trigger on a stock gun I've ever felt, even compared to my 1911s. If that trigger was over 3 pounds, I'd be very surprised...and it had no external safety. I traded it back in unfired...it was just too scary to carry.

I have very little experience with the SD cuz mine is new, but I did let the old sigma rip for a couple of years with no problem shooting a decent target. When I first shot the SD, I thought man, this is just icing on the cake, easy to shoot!

I've still yet to hear of a accidental or negligent discharge with a sigma or SD.

Single action guns are great for targets and boosting one's ego, but when you can shoot one of these well, it's an ego stroker in it's own right.

What weight did you get? (I can't remember if you have a 9 or a 40.) I'm thinking about getting the 20 lb version for my 40.

22lb for my .40

i shoot 180 GR rounds. both defensive and fmj for range

they recommend 20-22 for the .40 i figured since im a bigger guy and have plenty of strength racking the slide wont be an issue for me

will do soon as i get it in and make a trip to the range

"Custom made for the SD-VE and Sigma VE pistols these guide rods are made of Stainless and come pre-assembled to your selection. Factory spring rates are 17lb for both the 9mm and 40 models. We offer several rates as well as options on the retainer finish, black or polished stainless. We recommend the 20 or 22 for 40s/w pistols and 20 for the 9mm as upper limits. The 15 for light hand loads only."

This is JMHO, but I want a 4 to 4.5 pound trigger pull on every pistol I own, regardless if it's a DAO and/or lacks an external safety. I personally wouldn't have bought my SD9 if Apex hadn't already released the spring kit. Yes, 3 lbs. would be "too scary to carry" but an 8 lb. pull would wear out my finger too quickly at the range and tend to make me flinch, even with practice. Everyone's got their own preferences. I do lots of dry firing...as a result, my trigger finger on my right hand now has a six-pack and looks like it belongs to Arnold.

Can't help but notice nobody is saying they use their SD's for security or law enforcement. Is it not considered right for the job? I was a cop for 21 years carried s&w revolver, then the 4506. Only cause I got super deals on them. We had some guys carry Sigma 9's. Am going back to work, security this time and plan on the SD40vE going with me. Still have my 4506 but honestly that thing is just too heavy (39oz empty) The SD goes bang every time and I hear holsters are available. I can see no reason get anything else.
