Default SD40VE Bulge in spent casing

I've got a new SD40VE that I just took to the range for the first time this past Saturday. After firing 35-40 rounds I noticed a bulge in the casing near the rim of the spent brass. Is this normal?
I actually wrote S&W and they told me it was necessary to help feeding of the round, but this is the first I have ever seen of anything like this so I thought I'd post the question here.

Seems like a common occurance.

SD 40

SD40VE Shell Bulges. Typical?

New sd40ve owner, hope it's a good move

Bought my first Smith, a SD40VE (with range report)

Any idea what might cause this?

there is another post going on right now on the same subject. this is normal in most all 40 s&w cal guns. if you think your case are bad you should see some of the cases from the first glock 40 cals guns.
