Default S&W SD9VE Pin falling out

My very first gun was the S&W SD9VE that I purchased back in August 2013. The first thing I did was trade out the 8.5 lb trigger for an APEX 6.5 lb trigger. I have since put at least 2000 rounds through the gun, and clean it on a regular basis.

Recently, I've noticed the pin located underneath the barrel, right next to the takedown lever slides out after shooting it. I talked to my local gunsmith, and he told me it was because I was shooting too many rounds through it too fast (I shot about 200 rounds in under 30 minutes). That doesn't make any sense to me, especially since it does it after the first few shots.

Anyone else encounter this issue? - any thoughts?

Sure you put it back in correctly? Sounds like it may be backwards.

I never took this pin out to begin with. Even while cleaning, this pin was never touched.

In order to change the Trigger you have to take the trigger pin out, otherwise you can't swap neither the trigger nor the trigger return spring.

I had a gunsmith do this for me, so maybe he put it in backwards. Maybe that explains what happened...

If you still have the aluminum slave pin that came with the spring kit you can use it to push out the trigger pin. The trigger pivot pin has little notches and has to be put in the right way. Apex has a video on youtube that shows the procedure of swapping out the spring kit. The frame assembly starts at about 8:00 mins. It helped me a lot with my task of swapping trigger and spring kit of my SD9VE and I never encountered any problems with pins moving out of position while firing.

I have a different problem. The video shows the pin popping right out. I can't get mine out. Only about 200 rounds through weapon at this point. Is there a trick? I tried wiggling the slide lock lever as per the video, but that does nothing.

I popped mine out to the left because it won't move to the right neither. Worked fine for me.

Wink

It's strange the pin is walking out. There are notches on the trigger pin that the trigger spring and or slide lock spring sit in. They lock that pin into position. Try working the pin back and fourth till the springs get in the grooves.

As for the guy with trouble getting the trigger pin out try pushing from the other side and or pull trigger and flick slide lock to get the springs out the pins grooves. Do not hammer the pin, damage may occur.

I'm not a pro on this pistol I've just ran into and fixed both of these issues already.

Did you call S&W or did you just order new trigger pivot pin and slide release?

I called S&W. It literally was a 45 minute wait to talk to someone.
Guy had a bad day on top of that..
However, I told him I didn't want to send a 2 week old gun (at that time) back already...
So, he said the parts were not available to order yet. He said he had to move them to the parts bin, then he could ship them to me. NO CHARGE. So, I was happy about that. Said it would take a few weeks. It's been a little over a week.

I can tell you that you should NOT have to hammer or hit the pin out to remove it. You should only have to wiggle the slide lock release and gently tap on it with the slave pin. After it clears the slide release groove, it should damn near jump out of the gun.
If this new one does the same thing, I think I'm going to take a tiny bit off that lesser groove, so the slide release/spring have something better to sit on/rest in.

I should add, when it walks out, it's a few mm. I push it back in until I feel it "snap" or click.

When I.did my apex kit I had to beat on it to come out. My pin also moves. It only moves slightly until the right side of the pin is flush with the frame. I push it back amd it does it again. This seems like a common prob after installing the kit. Hopefully were not damaging the frames

Ok thanks for the reply, I have not modified anything on my pistol. Just weird that the trigger pivot pin worked loose after a few hundred rounds.

So...just a little update, not much...
Friday, I get the Apex spring kit for my girl's SD9VE, Galloway Grips as well. I get home, and I have a package from S&W for my 40VE.
He sent me the slide lock but the wrong piece for the trigger. He sent me the tiny little pin that holds the trigger bar onto the trigger itself, not the actual hinge pin... Oh well.

I put the new slide lock on my 40 and hit the range Saturday with hmbiohazard.
My buddy from the Detroit Police showed up to shoot, so honest, I put about 50 down range with my SD40VE. I put about 100 down range with my new (used) MP40c (turns out that picky little prima donna only likes new rounds, not reman..boo...lol)
Then, I spent time shooting my DPD buddy's ARSENAL he brought with him.
So...tomorrow I'm going to shoot. I plan on putting about 200 down range with my SD and another 100 with my 40c. I'll let you know if the new slide lock changes anything...

If the pin is installed correctly, the spring is resting in the groove and the pin still walks out, try using a toothpick to put a small dab of clear acrylic nail polish on one end of the pin, making sure a tiny bit flows between the pin and frame. Over the years I've found that it works well as a fast drying, low strength sealant and thread locking compound that doesn't harm the finish of the weapon. As an alternative, you could use a drop of flat black Testor's model paint. Either one will keep the pin in place after it dries. Hope this helps.

Interesting....will most definitely try that.
I'd think the violent nature of it being shot would make that fall out in no time, but I'll be happy to try it.
Thanks!

After taking that pin out and just reinstalling it, I shot over 150 rounds yesterday. The pin did not move at all.

Default Trigger pin SD9

I was at the range and I noticed the trigger pin coming out. It locked up the slide. I got the chamber cleared and sent it back to S&W. The gun hadn't had 300 rds through it. A friend found several comments from folks who had the same problem. I don't know what they did to fix but after 5-600 rds that problem hasn't come up again.

Update, after another 150 or more rounds, pin does not move. Reinstalling it worked in my case.
