Rumor Has It
I had gone to quite a few Academy stores looking for an SD40VE and three different employees told me that the SDVE line has been discontinued. I don't know if they are just not going to sell them or if S&W have stopped making them. Anyone else heard about this? Just curious.
By the way I was able to get one from my LGS so now I have both the 9 and 40.

Wonder why they would stop making gun that's flying off shelves and gets good press?

Yeah, I asked them why it was still online and they said that there are some stores that may have them and will not take it off until they are sold. I asked the person at the gun counter if they could check to see if there were any in the area stores so that I wouldn't have to drive all over town and three different stores told me the same thing.
I agree with them selling a lot but maybe they aren't making the money they want to and believe that if they raised the price they wouldn't sell as many. Not sure.

I doubt that S&W has discontinued them...they are still listed on the S&W website, and in fact they now have a CA compliant model (10 round mag, LCI, non-microstamped.) If they were discontinuing them, I don't think they'd make a CA model.
Academy Sports may not be carrying them anymore, I don't know..I know you can't ever find one in stock; as soon as they get one it sells. I can't believe they'd stop carrying such a hot seller unless they just can't get them to keep in inventory.

I doubt it also. I really like mine and it wouldn't make sense to stop selling a good inexpensive product that is in such demand.

My Academy was sold out last week. I was in there looking for ammo and this guy was asking about two-tone pistols. He was looking at a Taurus (the 92fs knockoff) and I told him to ask about the SD9VE because it's two-tone and a real quality firearm to boot. Lo and behold, they didn't have any in stock.

I'm not a bean counter but I sincerely doubt a gun that is perceived as both inexpensive to manufacture and sells a fair amount, would be discontinued.
From my layman's perspective, it's a market share ("budget" guns from reputable, world-class manufacturers) that's sizeable and that S&W seems to be doing quite well in.
On the other hand, the M&P line is only ~$150.00 more. One could reasonably argue the M&P's would fill the "budget" pistol slot.

I doubt they will discontinue it for a bunch of reasons.
FWIW: when they discontinued the sigma, they simply took it off the website. We discussed this at great length here in the forum at the time. Keeping an eye on the website is key. i wouldn't hang my hat on anything I hear at Academy. I got mine there, but other than price and convenience there is no other reason to buy there.

The most likely answer is that the Academy employees have an order book or online "book" they can order from. They can order whatever they are allowed to for that state. Academy's purchasing dept mgmt has probably made the decision to drop the item, NOT S&W. A store level person ordering is limited to what his home office says he can buy. That's true with virtually every retail chain whether it is guns, food, clothes, etc. Privately owned stores will be the true barometer. If a LGS says he can still order from his wholesaler, then don't worry.
In addition, sku's are usually limited by state or region. That is so that a clothing clerk in Miami can't order a bunch of heavy ski jackets. Your Academy clerk in CA or MA probably can't even order high cap mags even if he wanted to. Just because HE can't order it doesn't mean it isn't available somewhere else.

I agree with everyone's points and I have a theory as well. The ones that told me this looked as though they didn't really know enough to work behind a gun counter and in turn did not know what they were talking about. I took it with a grain of salt but wanted to know if anyone else had been told the same thing.
I believe that they would be able to order these in Texas. Just an opinion.

Hopefully other manufacturers will take note. S&W put a high-quality product out there at 2/3rds to 1/2 the price of the competition, and stores can't keep them on the shelves! In this economy, price sells guns.

I have no information that would lead me to believe that the SDVE pistols are to be discontinued. In fact, S&W's press release concerning the California microstamping legislation would seem to indicate the opposite.

I've noticed that my local Academy had less SD's on the shelf, but more Shields, and the Shields were about $400. I think it's marketing on Academy's part. They used to have more CZ's, but I don't see them anymore either. But they always seem to have lots of Taurus models-----something is seriously wrong here.

My local Academy can't get either of the SDVE models, and there aren't any in any of the stores in the DFW metroplex. (I called them all, looking.) My local store has a good selection of .22s, but no ammo. They also have a few SIGs, Berettas, 1911s, and a lot of Taurus guns (but not the PT111 Millenium Pro G2, which is a hot seller.) They've never had a Shield in stock.
One store told me they were very frustrated with their (Academy's) stocking program, because they can't seem to get the guns that they put on sale, advertise online, and in flyers. People come in to buy them (I always call ahead) and get mad at them when they don't have them. Academy needs to revamp their program, for sure.

If you are looking for one and in the mood for a road trip there is a gun store here in San Antonio that has quite a few in both calibers in stock for $329.00.

Their demise had been announced in 2012. Perhaps S&W changed their mind. You can search the boards here, there was some discussion about it at the time.

-That's what I paid for mine. $351.44 out the door. No regrets what-so-ever about buying this pistol!

I looked back on those threads, and the discussions were about the SD9/SD40, which indeed have been discontinued. In their place, S&W now makes the SD9VE/SD40VE.
Having owned a SD9, and now owning a SD9VE and a SD40VE, I think the trigger is slightly better on the VE models. The rear sight is plastic, and the front sight isn't a night sight. The slide is stainless, rather than melonite...other than those, I can't recall any differences between the SD and the SDVE. Anyone?

GKC is correct almost ...the internals are the same on SD and SDVE S&W dumped the SD in favor of the SDVE. It didn't make sense to offer the sigma for $300 the SD for $400 and M&P for $500. Most people would either buy the sigma or just drop an extra $100 on the M&P over the SD. I do like my SD though.
I'd wouldn't trust any counter jockey for accurate info besides what time his next break was

I agree & the counter jockey would not want you to wait on one, or go looking else where, they want to sell the ones they have.

Well those counter jockeys are officially wrong. The Academy near my house has an SD9VE and SD40VE for $299.99 each. I didn't believe that they knew what they were talking about to begin with but now there is proof.

I have heard the most amazing "advice" and "information" provided by Academy clerks to prospective buyers who obviously know nothing about firearms. It just makes me cringe...

Just bought sd9ve at academy
I just picked a sd9ve up Sunday at academy for 299 so they still get them just few and far between. I know deans gun shop has them also for same price. For the record this is a much improved version of my sw9ve.
