Lightbulb Custom SD40VE guide rod

I've just purchased my very first weapon, an SD40VE. I haven't had time to go out to the range with it yet, as I finished the purchase 30 minutes before having to be to work. The only thing I'm not a big fan of is the plastic guide rod. While I'm sure it functions just fine (or S&W wouldn't have used it), I'm looking to get a metal rod. I have a gun enthusiast buddy who is a highly skilled machinist. We are going to make one out of 7075 aluminum, and probably anodize it (more than likely silver as it would have a nice contrast with the frame). Has anyone done something like this? I would very much like some feedback on the idea, and also if anyone thinks there would be a market for it, or would like one themselves! I'm not sure what costs would be, but we would be more than happy to crank out a few if there is enough interest. I will be posting start to finish photos as soon as we get it done, more than likely this weekend. Thanks in advance for anyone's suggestions or help!

Steel guide rods are already commercially available for the SD. Personally, I would not trust aluminum to have enough impact strength. I use the stock rods and springs.
Whatever you do, be sure to use the captive flat-wound recoil springs, which are superior to piano wire springs.

Yeah, I saw those, and if I didn't have a friend who would make me one just for cost of the material, that's probably what I would get. Thanks for the info though!
