Default Lighter than normal recoil spring for SD9VE

I was surfing the net to see what was available for my new SD9VE and ran across Galloway Precision guide rods and springs. They say that the 17 pound springs are standard but they offer a light 15 pound spring as well.

Has anyone used the lighter recoil spring in their gun and how did it work?

I have been working up some handloads using 700X and 115 FMJ for the new gun.
4.0gr (FTE)
4.2gr (fires and ejects fine but will not lock slide back on empty)
4.4-4.5gr (100% functional)

I was thinking that a lighter spring would allow me to use lighter handloads for beginner shooters that would still function 100%. What do you guys think?

Makes sense. Lighter recoil spring will also solve any brass-to-forehead issues sometimes reported with the 9mm (as will hotter ammo with the standard recoil spring).

I have their 15lb on my sigma 9f. I shoot x-treme 115gr plated HP using 700x at 4.1gr. except for being a little pricey it's a good product IMO.

Yes, when the slide locks back and the empties land 3 to 6 feet away, you have the correct recoil spring for that load. However, if you then shoot +P and the brass lands 15 feet away, you risk damaging the gun. Easy enough to change recoil springs for widely different loads, like the .40 shooters do to shoot minor power .40 S&W.

Thanks guys for confirming my thoughts about a lighter spring value. I may pick up the fifteen pound spring just so I can download some of my reloads for beginners. Its so easy to change springs out that it seems a no-brainer. I have some nieces, nephews and a grandson that I think would benefit from a lighter recoiling gun.

I'm very happy with the SD9VE so far. It feels so much lighter than many other full and midsize 9mm's and the ergos just fit me. The Glocks feel like a twobyfour and even the M&P doesn't feel as good to me. Having grown up shooting the S&W wheelguns, the trigger pull is not a problem. Its nice and smooth and doesn't stack in pull weight like I have experienced in some other guns. It's just a straight nice pull through with a predictable release. Yes, its not two pounds but it is very manageable and for me at least, a perfect self-defense trigger.

Of course, I might have just got a great pistol with a trigger better than most but I doubt it. Most every one I have handled has had a good smooth trigger.

Waiting on my SD9 to come back from smith and Wesson, for that same reason. I shoot target 115 exclusively, and I was having numerous fte. My guess was too heavy recoil spring. But I figured I'd let them go over it anyway. I've heard about a few .40 springs accidentally put in 9mm handguns... Doesn't hurt to let them check it out... If it comes back and does the same after break in, didn't have a problem till 500 round mark, then I'll switch to a lighter spring

I don't see SD recoil spring assemblies on the Galloway web page. They are offering "discontinued" flat wound springs only, for the SD, in several weights. Discontinued Flat Wound Recoil Spring for Smith & Wesson Sigma VE and SD VE Pistols :: Sigma and SD Performance Parts :: Smith & Wesson(R) Performance :: Galloway Precision

If using an aftermarket recoil spring assembly with a metal rod, recommend care in observing for impact on the frame -- hammering marks or even cracks. As discussed in previous threads, some metal recoil rods have been noted to beat up the SD frame.
