Default FTE after apex spring kit install

First post Here!

Just as the title states, my sd9ve won't eject after I installed the apex spring kit. It will fire properly but will not eject the case. I tried it with one shell, and a fully loaded magazine, it does the same thing. I gave the gun a good cleaning and it still won't eject. Any ideas?

Default SDVE9 Ejection

Since you didn't mention the ammo you are using and assuming that it is the same factory new and not reloads. The two areas of concern will be the ejector and extractor. On some Apex kits the ejector will tend to be loose and have some movement which you can check after removing the slide, it has to be replaced properly and make sure it is up against the rear Block, the extractor is a little more difficult unless you have worked on several S&W SD's or M&P's. It needs to be adjusted to the factory spec's. Since the proper tools to check it are only available to certified S&W gunsmiths I would call APEX for assistance. But if you have enough experience working on the SD, remove the slide and take either a fired case or preferably a new case and slide it up from the bottom of the slide to make sure the case is being held firmly against the breach face and that it is not tipping to the right. If it is then some very lite adjustment needs to be done to the extractor. The extractor should be removed to do any modifications or you could damage the firearm. You need a excellent quality stone to polish the hook on the extractor and can only remove enough metal to be able and slide the empty case firmly up and against the breach and extractor hook. Before I attempted to modify it though I would try a different type of ammunition to assure the issue is with the firearm, ammo or shooter. I would guess that you have fired a minimum of 200 rounds through the SD before you modified it. Hope this helps. I have put Apex kits in over 300 S&W's without a problem. If you can find a good Gunsmith in your area you might have him take a look to make sure all the parts are correctly installed and functioning as expected.

First welcome to the forum.

Did the gun operate properly with the factory hardware? If so, why not put it back in?

Yes it did work properly. I just didn't like the heavy trigger.

Chris, thank you for the detailed post. I have been using both Federal, and winchester shells. I tried both, and the problem still exists. Prior to the modification, I have fired somewhere in the neighborhood of 6-800 rounds. I have contacted Apex, and they sent me a link to a trouble shooting video. I watched it, and then checked everything they mentioned.

I do have a question (probably dumb one), but is the extractor supposed to move? I dont recall it moving prior to the modification, but now I can move it with my finger. Is this normal?

Default Apex Kit in SD

There can be a very small amount of movement but normally it should require some force. Personally I would remove the APEX Striker Block Spring and put the factory spring back in. This is the one spring I never replace on all apex kits. It almost sounds like a slow ignition issue which could be caused by that spring. I have installed over 300 od APEX kits in both the M&P and SD and based on the use of quality ammunition with a history of working this is where I would look as well as the movement I the ejector. My personal M&P 45 has 48000 rounds with out a single failure to function and the ejector has a very slight amount of movement but again I have to apply a moderate amount of pressure. But if it worked prior I would change the Striker Spring first and check for function also make sure that the trigger return spring is in properly and the front of the spring opening is up through the top of the of the transfer bar. this alone could cause your problem by changing the angle of the trigger release. Hope this helps. the only other choice would be place it back to stock and polish everything to help the trigger pull.
