Exclamation SD9VE Holster for Front Sight Training

Howdy Folks -

I'm a proud new SD9VE owner. I've managed to fire a few 100 rounds through the gun so far. I'm planning on taking a class with Front Sight in Nevada https://www.frontsight.com/firearms-...g/handguns.asp

They require a holster for the SD9VE. I'm not sure how to interpret the requirements or where to find a suitable holster. Does anyone have any recommendations for which holster to use which fits their criteria?

Thanks jimbo

See below:
Recommended Holsters
  • Firing side, outside waistband (OWB) belt holsters are recommended for all handgun classes.
  • Inside the waistband (IWB) holsters, depending on style, are permitted for all classes, but are not recommended.
  • IWB holsters should not be worn forward or past the firing side hip for range use.
  • Holsters must have full trigger guard coverage.
  • Holsters should have a vertical cant.
  • FBI cant holsters are allowed, but discouraged.
  • Holsters with a cant greater than 15 degrees are not allowed.
  • Thumb-breaks must be taped out of the way.
  • Blackhawk Serpa or similar holsters requiring trigger finger release mechanisms are not allowed.
  • ABSOLUTELY NO THIGH HOLSTERS, even for advanced handgun students.
  • Leather holsters are acceptable provided they are rigid enough to remain open when the gun is withdrawn and their thumb-breaks can be taped out of the way.

In general, we recommend Kydex or injection molded polymer holsters when possible. Factory supplied Springfield Armory XD/XDM holsters are not recommended. They are excellent carry holsters but do not perform well when used in our courses as they are not designed for the frequency of use we demand of them.

If you have a question regarding the usability of a specific holster, please email the Front Sight Pro Shop at [email protected] or call 702-837-7433 x200.

Preferred holsters are the Blade-Tech Classic or Revolution, and either two single magazine pouches or one double magazine pouch. Visit the Blade-Tech website, and enter coupon code FSTACM13 to receive a special Front Sight discount, and priority shipping within 2 weeks. Blade-Tech’s IDPA Competition Pack is a perfect example of great gear for you to train with.

Fobus holsters, while most styles are usable in our courses, are specifically NOT recommended due to retention and fit issues.

This. I use them, and they work great for M&Ps. Haven't tried the fit with an SD.
In general the Kydex OWB holsters approved for IDPA are suitable.
I'm using Safariland holsters for my Sigma/SDs. Look at the model 567.

hi okfc05 -
is there a specific Blade-Tech holster you are using with the SD9VE?

The Blade Tech site shows something that might be close with "S&W Sigma 9/40VE /Sigma Enhanced SKU: HOLX000842453246 Price: $64.99"

But I'm not sure this is ok for the SD9VE as I thought it was no longer a Sigma.

The IDPA competition pack is not immediately available for the SD9VE.
Thanks
jimbo

I'd use the Blackhawk Serpa. I got mine on line from Natchez Shooters Supply. It was about $38 delivered which is about $20 less than most places charge.

Lots of holster companies out there for the SD9VE now. Even Bravo Concealment makes a Range Time Model. These guns are becoming very popular. Hope to get mine soon.

Except that one was listed as NOT RECOMMENDED by the course info he listed.

Unfortunately, as listed above and original post; the serpa holster in not allowed. That's too bad, as I just bought one for my SD9VE and not only does it fit perfectly, with practice and familiarization, I'm starting to like it quite a bit!

I am waiting for a new leather DeSantis Speed Scabbard that I ordered from amazon.com. It is an open top, 3 slot pancake with tension adjustment. Comes in black or tan and was on sale for $43.99. MidwayUSA also has them for the same price, but with amazon I got free shipping. I would think this would meet the requirements.

There's not a lot of choices right now for the SDVE series; but there are a few like Uncle Mikes, safariland, bianchi, etc. and most offer some form of kydex/polymer holster and mag holders/carriers.

Good luck and let us know what you end up with.

You should take a look at these guys. They come with a lifetime warranty also.

Bill

FYI, I do not have any affiliation with the company.

Was wondering if the OP had any luck with a holster? Found several doing a search on E-bay; most very reasonable in kydex/polymer.
