SD40VE -- Putting a $$$ On it?
I'm seriously considering selling my SD40VE and buying full sized M&P 40. I'm trying to figure out fair asking price for the SD. It's in perfect condition. About 18 months old with about 250 rounds through it. Truglow TRITIUM/FIBER OPTIC sights. I'll do some research locally, but I welcome your opinions.

I've "heard" in these forums that most LGS's will give about 50% of the retail value. That might be a good place to start, then add some value for the sights. If trying to sell locally, you'll have to consider what new ones go for.

In Texas lowest price new is at Academy - $350.00 out the door plus about $100 for sights with install. I'm hoping to sell to an individual rather than via a LGS. I'm thinking ~$350 ?

$350 is an ok price to ask, but there's no guarantee people will take it. I sold my sd9ve, and I just think it would've been better if I kept it. I had 2 extra mags, and the apex trigger kit installed. I think I got a whole $25 over retail. If you really need the money, ok, I say sell it. Otherwise you might just be better off keeping it. As you can see you're not getting anymore money than what you paid for it. Heck, I think in that deal I even had to throw in ammo to get that price. I had just about as much as you did put into it...
And of course, now I am in the market for one again as the gun I replaced it with is not as fun (sig p250)

Well, if I'm going to make the case for an M&P 40, I'll need to sell this one. I then plan to get a 9mm and 357 sig barrel, a few 9mm mags. And then I hope to get a 45c. It is a conspiracy to get more guns. Don't tell my wife!

Swap the sights with factory.
Keep the TFO's for the M&P.
Not worth taking a hit on Night Sights you will probably buy again anyways.

$350 is a good starting price.
Try selling on your local guntrader or Armslist.
Academy sells for $319 or on sale at $289.

On sale New SD's go for $289-$295 here in SC. Non-sale prices run $309 to $329. Dealer cost is $259. Sorry but I can't see a used SD even with Night sights bringing more than $300, and you'll be lucky to get that. You're better off keeping it as a backup or loaner and saving for the M&P 40.
Best Regards,
ADP3

So you don't like the gun or the sights ?
If the gun is stock I would say maybe a little over half the retail price. To many questions when buying a used gun , I would not buy one at all that I could not try out first.

Around here, the new one goes for $289.. I agree with switching out the sights and reinstalling on the M&P, otherwise you're going to take a hit on those too. Selling it yourself, no night sights, maybe 2 and a quarter. 25 more with the night sights. Selling it to someone who has to retail it, probably 50 bucks less.

A dealer would give aprox 2/3 of what they expect to ask for it used, probably in low 200's. In my area typically retail new for +/- 399 . So for a private party sale , you could ask optimistically for 350 , but be willing to negeoate for more like 300.

Hmm, That's a lot on input and I appreciate it. But you are changing my mind. I wouldn't sell it for less than $275 and I would hate to sell it at that. You may be right -- Keep it as a backup. It is currently my HD.
I love it, by the way. It is a great firearm for the money. I do wish I had opted for an M&P first, though. I'll give it some thought before putting it up for sale.

I have decided to retire my SD40 and give it to my son. It is a very fine, accurate and dependable piece, but having recently purchased an M&PFS9, I no longer shoot it. I checked with my LGS only to learn the best I could do on a trade or consignment would be $245. Selling it on line, or through a newspaper ad would be a hassel! This way it stays close to home and I know he will appreciate the gift.

Just to echo what others have said, low price new in MA is $289. Recent sale price was $279. Both are cash prices. Asking price for used ones is right around $225 in good shape with 2 10-round post-ban magazines. Pre-ban magazines, if included in a restricted nanny state, add a lot to the asking price. Night sights are the wild card here. Guess it all depends if you can find a person who wants an SD40VE with night sights. That wouldn't be too common around here. I would remove and reuse the night sights on the new M&P if it were me.
I picked up a used SD40VE for $199, but it had a damaged rear plastic sight. I replaced the damaged plastic sight with a metal M&P one for $15. Good as new. In fact, better than new.
The usual criteria of wanting to save at least $100 by buying "slightly used" is strained to the max when you are talking about a gun that sells for just $289 (+/-) brand spanking new. Best to just swallow very hard and take the hit now if you must... or, even better, keep it for back-up.

I would love to buy a used SDVE after selling my first SDVE. But I don't see much. I think because you can't really get much out of it. I should have just taken advantage of that Academy sale of 289. It will come again though, but as of now it's back to the original 319...Anyways, I am considering .40s&w now (if I can find it first for a good price), but I really would prefer the 9mm.

the problem is the cost of a new one is hurting resale. just keep it. save up your lunch money to buy the new gun.

Exactly. When you can buy a brand new gun of that quality so cheaply, where is the motivation or incentive to buy used?
Even in my situation where I was able to buy a used SD40VE for $199 ( plus $15 for a new rear sight), I'm still sort of sad that I didn't pay the extra $65 it would have cost me for a brand spanking new one. I like the platform that much.
Truth is that sometime in the future, if and when the opportunity ever presents itself, I might trade up to a brand spanking new one just for the Hell of it. $65.00 is nothing in this hobby. No rush or anything, but why not?

Dealers would give you depending on condition of pistol,$165-300 dollars. I happen to be a wholesaler-dealer and in the book, blue, the dealers would give in that ball park range. Just hope Chad doesn't have a hissy about the prices to me again.
