Default Guide rail spring strength? - SD40VE

Hello forum.

I'm swapping out my plastic guide rods for steel.

I'm on my SD40VE and am wondering about the spring strength. What's the factory strength, and what are you using if you swapped? 15,17,20,22 lbs are the options.

Thanks,
JT

Thanks for the info! Still not sure I I'll go with the 17 or 20, but now I know what to consider.

I have the 17 lb spring in my 9mm. I would surely suggest that you use the 20 lb in a .40. I actually wish I had put the 20 in my 9.

I chatted with a gunsmith at Galloway Precision about which spring to go in my SD40VE. I told him I wanted this gun to be reliable with factory 165 and 180 grain loads, and the gun was to be used for EDC. I wanted rid of the plastic guide rod and 100% reliability! He suggested the 20 lb spring was my best option. I ordered the stainless guide rod with the 20 lb spring and absolutely love it. Gun has functioned perfectly since the guide rod/spring from Galloway.

Was it less than perfect before ? I looked into doing this but could not find a reason to.

Gun ran perfect with the S&W factory 17 lb. spring. Was told by gunsmith that heavier spring would help some with recoil, muzzle rise and would help longevity of gun. I've been shooting 9mm for about 30years, my SD is the first I've owned in 40 cal. Big difference in recoil and energy for sure. I can't understand why S&W would use the same spring in both the 9mm and 40 cal . Value Enhanced maybe?

The Galloway guide rod comes apart with a hex wrench. Spring changes should be fairly easy and can be purchased for about 8-10 dollars.

Quick question all, I have a sw40v and want this trash plastic guide rod gone. I have looked at the Galloway on Amazon, but they specify it fits the sd, and sw VE models. Will this guide rod fit the V model?

I would go to Galloway Precision's website and email or call them to make sure their guide/spring will fit your gun. You can also order direct from Galloway.
