Does any one compete with their SD/SW/Sigma?
Might be a stupid question, but just curious.

I cannot imagine any sort of competition in which that model series would be competitive. That is not to say that some do not use it for such, but if it were the right tool for the job, professional shooters would use it at least in those matches calling for a "stock" type of pistol.

Did quite well in IDPA years back. Really got the hang of the pistol and made it run. ...
A few years later I picked up a Browning Hi Power. .... Wow, I got even faster

I've shot a few IDPA matches with my Sigma, did fine. Since I carry it, this seemed a great way to get as good as possible with it.

I was considering trying IDPA and using my SD9VE. It seems to be very accurate and I shoot it very well. I would like to try IDPA, and hopefully improve my shooting skills, with the guns I actually do carry for CC.
Besides the SD9VE, I also have an M&P 45 and a Ruger SR1911. I would like to try something other than punching holes in paper. And all my guns are factory stock. So, thoughts?

We had one Sigma at the IDPA match today. Although I normally shoot an M&P 9 5" Pro, I sometimes shoot one of my Sigmas in a club match to make a point: it's the indian, not the arrow!
Frankly, until you get the hang of the game and start getting good hits, it is pointless to buy a gun just to get faster. In IDPA, you can't miss fast enough to win.
If you want to try IDPA, take what you have and go to the next match in your area. Be safe, have fun, maybe even learn something.

The next match around our area is 1 1/2 hours away on Dec. 6, 2014. I was thinking of going just to observe and see what it's all about. I'd like to see how I'd do in competition, with my stock handguns. They are the guns that I carry, feel comfortable with and am accurate with them. But I want to see how I'd do under pressure with them and how my skills would hold up.

Take your rig and shoot. You'll be sorry if you don't. If it is like most clubs, you'll get plenty of help and encouragement.
The score? Look at that after you learn the game.
We've had fellows worry about being good enough, having the perfect rig, winning, etc. and hem and haw forever without actually getting out there and shooting....what a waste! JUST GO SHOOT!

Okay, where to start.... Im new to pistol's for the most part. Ive looked on the web, and seems to me that IDPA matches are mostly a cover/real life scenario competition.
1.How do I get involved in this type shooting.
2.I have a meager income,so cost "IS" a factor.
thanks in advance!!

First up would be to log on to the IDPA website where there is a host of new shooter information.....club listings for your area etc.
As far as gear goes, use what you ALREADY have...a handgun that is IDPA legal and 3 magazines/speedloaders, a pouch to carry them in, a cover garment, a quality holster either Inside the waistband or On the belt....the holster if it is on the belt must cover the trigger guard.
Leather or Kydex matters not...use what you already have FIRST and then you can make some informed decisions AFTER you have shot in a few matches.
Eye and ear protection are mandatory...a range/gym type bag to carry your gear in and usually I bring 150 rounds of ammo just to be on the safe side...If you reload make sure that you meet or exceed power factors....if not simply use factory ammo.
Clothing that is suitable for the climate you are in....what I use in Montana may not be a good choice in your region.
So....find a match nearby, attend the new shooters meeting, and go have a BLAST!!!!
You will have many old hands VERY willing to help you be safe and have a great time all at the same time!
Sincerely,
Randy
PS. I usually use my REAL carry gun which is a 3913....other times I still like shooting Stock Service Revolver with handloads that certainly make power factor. (Essentially a reproduction of the FBI load)....Sometimes my 1911 SC Commander size comes out and enjoys a day on the range as well....
My real point is that for many in IDPA , using their real carry guns gives them great practice and confidence.

Growr, thanks for the info and encouragement. I'll check with the local shops. I know of one that does have IDPA competitions on a regular basis.

Have never tried to compete with my SW40VE, but I sure as heck like to shoot it. It has never failed me.
