long story short,

the bad, i didnt find out until i put the slide back on. now the hammer wont fire all the way and the slide is stuck.
HELP!!! now what?

I am very familiar with Sigmas, but from your description, I can't tell what you did. Exactly what spring(s) did you mess with?

The trigger spring is the small spring in the frame that simply returns the trigger to the forward position. The SEAR springs are in the rear of the frame, and the STRIKER spring surrounds the striker spring in the slide.

There is NO hammer in a Sigma. The trigger operates through the trigger linkage so that the SEAR pulls the STRIKER rearward, then the sear releases the striker at the end of the pull, allowing the striker to go forward and hit the primer.
Here's a link to a SW40F schematic and parts list, so you can use standard terminology:

there is a return spring that isnt shown. it attaches to part #44 (trigger?), via a small hook on the end of a spring. the opposing side of the spring attaches to the trigger pin #16. yes it was lots of fun putting the trigger assembly back together. i used two punches to help guide everything into alignment.

That is the trigger return spring. The Sigma will fire and function without this spring EXCEPT THAT THE TRIGGER WILL NOT RETURN FORWARD (If this spring ever breaks, just push the trigger forward to reset, and the gun will function).

Two comments: 1. Even if that spring were GONE, it would not lock up the gun. Nor does changing it help the trigger pull enough to matter. The heavy trigger pull in the Sigma comes from the SEAR and striker springs, and there is precious little you can do about it without affecting reliability.
2. It sounds like the sear is not being pulled down to release the striker, and THAT WILL lock up the gun. If that is the case, and the slide can be locked back, I'd take the back plate off the slide, remove the striker, which will allow the slide to come off the frame (catch the little spring out of the slide when you remove the back plate!!)

Then you can see what is messed up with the linkage. ALWAYS check sear function BEFORE putting the slide on.

thank you for the wise words. i finally got the slide off, will look tomorrow at the situation. too late. i used a dental pick to slide the slide release.
thanks again!
