I have the spring kit in my SD9, it is an improvement over the stock springs (still have them in case I have to send it back to S&W). No issues with it. Trigger, I couldn't tell ya don't have it

Same as above. Did the spring kit and it made a difference. Haven't done the trigger and don't feel the need to do so

I did the spring kit in my SD9, haven't felt the need to do anything about the trigger. So I can't speak to it. However if it's anything like the trigger for the M&P it will be an improvement.

This is a much discussed topic here.

I see no need whatsoever to change the stock configuration on the gun.

I ran a poll on this a while back.

To modify or not to modify?

I don't plan to modify my SD9VE CA. No plans to do match shooting with it or carry it. If I ever carry it I will appreciate the greater trigger pull.

Anyhow, these guns are so far different from those we used for match shooting in NROTC and Navy that I really don't expect them to do more than hit a standard target most of the time. In match shooting, you often touch, or completely take out the black dot in the center of the target.

These DA guns are just fine for my needs.

I have a sigma 9f, a pre-runner of the SD. The trigger was really bad (Gritty and 12lbs), at least in the one I bought (decades ago). Since the Apex kit and plastic trigger, it is now 5.2lbs (wheeler trigger scale) and smooth. Also the trigger reduced the takeup by approx. 20% and I sense no over travel any more. I now enjoy my Sigma and shoot it a lot more.

Mine has the full kit except for the striker spring. I went back to the original striker spring because I was getting light hits on some of my reloads. It may have been primers too deeply seated, but I wanted some assurance. The feel of the Apex kit is superb. The trigger pull is shortened and the reset is much quicker. Obviously, I like mine.

Default Apex upgrades are great, but there''s another option

Folks who go the Apex route are very happy with the results. In addition to the lighter springs they offer a new trigger that has a flat, solid feel to it, has a smoother pivot and geometry, and lessens the take-up and over-travel. They also offer a stainless steel guide rod and new spring.

The only hesitation is would be if you've got two left thumbs. It can get a little tricky fiddling with the small trigger springs - gettng them in and out. Having two small punches on hand will help. If you watch the video several times, you can probably do it in under an hour.

The other intriguiguing option is what I saw on Galloway Precision.

They also offer SD enhancements like a Reduced Power Spring Set, a Lighter Sear Spring, a Wide Body Take Down Plate, an Assembled Stainless Steel Guide Rod, (and a set of Traction Grip Overlays. )

Galloway Precision :: Smith & WessonŽ Performance :: Sigma and SD Performance Parts

They don't offer the AEK Trigger like Apex, but you can always get one from there if you want it.

Mix and match to your hearts content.

Default Still searching for the elusive Apex vs. Galloway comparo

First of all, one thing I can confirm is that Galloway's stainless steel guide rod & spring replacement is a unanimous winner for everyone who bought one. All but three of the 123 customers who rated it gave it FIVE STARS. The other three save it FOUR STARS.

Pretty darn impressive. So, right out of the gate, the Galloway replacement guide rod is a must buy. They also have a choice of recoil spring weights. The normal spring weight on the SD9VE is 17#, but they also sell a 16# (use only for light loads) and an 18#. For the SD40's, they sell a 20# and 22#.

Now, about those spring kits. I did ask that questrion, as someone else on here did, too, but never got an answer - so I'm trying again.

It will probably take an experienced reviewer (like those on TTAG, the Truth About Guns or The Firearm Blog) to actually have two SD9VE's - one with the Apex kit and one with the Galloway kit.

The only downside to the Galloway kit w/o knowing about its performance, is that you are paying $4 more for the enhanced trigger pin that you may never buy. But, if you did, it also comes with the same pin. Galloway needs to give the buyer the option to order the spring kit without the pin, or the spring kit and trigger kit with just one pin and not two.

The major difference in terms of pats is that Galloway comes with a lighter sear spring while Apex does not, claiming that they designed the kit to work with the stock sear.

Since Apex had their spring kit out before Galloway had theirs, I'm inclined to go with Galloway on the basis of seeing a need to include the sear spring. Whether or not Apex excluded it because they felt it added an unnecessary spring or added an unnecessary additional step for the gun owner.

Short of a direct shoot-off, so to speak, the other option is to bring together two owners of brand new SD9VE's (that are hopefully indistinguishable): one who went the Apex route and the other who went the Galloway route - put them both on the range and let them take turns firing each other's guns.

Or, even before heading out to the range, insert a mag with snap caps in each gun, blindfold them, and then play "musical guns" - taking turns dry firing the trigger about 10 times per gun, and then ask them the $64,000 question:

"WHICH GUN FELT BETTER TO YOU IN TERMS OF TRIGGERS?"

Either the results will be equivocal or there will be a clear preference for one over the other. If the winner turns out to be Galloway, then there is something beneficial to swapping out the sear spring.

If the results are even, then Apex would be the one to choose UNLESS you order the SS guide rod, and maybe the wide slide release also, Galloway would give you a discount.

OK, your turn. Thoughts, please?

I prefer mine stock.

The more you shoot it the better it, and you get.

Stock means no worries about factory warranties.

And if you live in a state that is not "gun friendly", less to worry about criminally or civilly if used in self defense.

I hear a lot of good things about the steel guide rods, including the fact that they don't bend and the polymer rods do bend.

However, doesn't Glock still uses them?

Beretta announced their new military M9A3 at the SHOT show in Vegas and it features a "POLYMER RECOIL GUIDE ROD".

They have delivered 600,000 of the previous version to US government departments and have an order for 100,000 more. A commercial version will be available in the future.

I believe I had posted once that I was considering getting one, but am not really sure its an important factor.

I'm receptive to opinions of users on both sides of this.
