Default SD9VE ?

Hi,

I am looking for a home defense handgun and I am considering a SD9VE to fill that roll. I have read mixed reviews, some good, some not-so-good.
I have shot a M&P9 at the range and it is a great gun, however, for a home defense gun, I didn't want to spend all that extra money on the M&P9.
I have other handguns that i use mainly for conceal carry guns, but would like a dedicated "home defense" handgun...
Any comments/suggestions would be a big help...

Thank you

I don't know what kind of encouragement you are looking for---alot has been posted recently about the SD9VE. read the posts. I have owned both the M&P40c and the Shield 9. I bought a SD9VE two days ago and much prefer it over the M&P or the shield. I shot mine yesterday and am carrying it today with my 642.The SD9 is a very well made weapon fully equal to the M&P. Just not as fancy. The front sight is steel and the rear is plastic. If you can find one I would buy it.

Thanks for your replies... I guess my original post was a little premature... I have since found MANY posts here in regards to the reliability and fondness of the SD9VE. Yes, I think the handgun will fit my needs!!

Wink

From what I have read, it is an under-appreciated gun.
The Army armed some Iraqi cops with it, and that is a testament in its favor. Having a lousy gun in Iraq is certain death, or near-enough. The stories & comments that I have seen, have been all over the place. I would buy one, if that aids in any enlightenment.

I don't mind if a gun is ugly or considered "less than the top". My Ruger P-97 had an undeserved low opinion, in the esteem of a lot of "aficionados/devotees".
AND: Don't be afraid to try long shots of 25/50/75/100 yards, after you get the gist of things.
You may well be amazed at what a good pistol can do. That goes for any high quality brand, it should group well.

And if you have been flooded with info, then I guess you came to the right place.

The SD9VE or the Sig P2022 would serve you well for your intended role. Both are excellent guns period, not just because of their value prices.

Just an observation. I have several guns. I'm finding that when I go to the range to check one of them out, or try a new load, I usually throw the SD9 in the bag to check baselines. If i can't hit anything, I pull the SD out to see if it's me or the other gun. Most typically, I can put a mag in a 9 inch circle withe the SD. It's just a very good, very accurate, very reliable gun. A while back, I bought a set of Trijicons for my Shield. After a bit of thought, they went on the SD9.

Thanks for the alternative!!

I have considered the Sig 2022, but it's a little out of my price range. The lowest price I found was online for around $450 (plus FFL fee). However, I have seen the SD9VE listed online for around $310 (plus FFL fee).

For my intended use (strictly home defense), I think the S&W will probably be the one I go with.

Thanks for all your comments and suggestions!

More than one online vendor has had the 2022 for around $350 in the past month or so. Can't go wrong with the SD though, especially when you can snag one for $300 or less.

I call the S&W SD9VE the "Thinking Man's GLOCK" with better ergonomics.

Since their introduction here in 1986 I've owned nearly every model GLOCK has made. They're relieable and accurate but always fit my hand like a piece of scrap 2X4" lumber.

The SD9VE fits my hand as if it were molded to it. It's good looking, 100% reliable and accurate at about HALF the price of a GLOCK.

I was so impressed by the first one I bought, that I bought it a stable mate 10 days later.

You can check out a thread I started when I bought my SD9VE, I update it weekly with a range trip/report. If you've read it, you know how happy I am with mine-with over 1,100 rounds in about 5 months.

Mine is all stock and I like it so much, I see no reason to change anything-inside or out (well, maybe add a light to the rail-maybe).

Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions! I have decided to get a SD9VE. Now, I just need to find a "fair" deal on one. I have visited (3) gun shops in my area, but none have them in stock. I asked each dealer for a quote for one if I decide to order one from them. The quotes range from $325 to $379. I am also looking online to see what kind of a deal I can find there. I have also checked to see what the FFL transfer fees are here locally (most are $25). One shop said they charge $75 for the transfer!!! WHAT!!!!! I just need to decide where to buy it from.

Bud's Gun Shop has them for $311, but with $25 transfer not as good as you can get locally. I paid $299 at a local shop, who usually runs them at that price on a regular basis.

Hope you find one; I just bought the SD40VE yesterday at a gun show, now I have a matched set! LOL :-) My first 40 cal. and hope it's as good as my SD9VE.

Look for a GUN SHOW near you. Thats where I got mine for $299.
It has been a while but still could be your best bet & they are fun to go to.
The Gunshop / Range I use has raised the price on them to $334.
For a few dollars more or less it is still IMO the best self-defense pistol out there.

Academy Surplus was running a special on them last week. $299 for the SD9VE or the SD40VE. I have the SW40VE with Apex spring kit and lighter sear spring, bought the SD9VE for wife. With the Apex polymer trigger the SD9VE is smooth and crisp.

I guess I will be the odd guy out here but I hated the SD series. They are good guns for the money but it soured me bad enough I almost wrote off S&W completely. I say save your money and get a M&P.

I have found lots of places that sell the SD9VE with the 10 round mags (around $300), but the 16 round mags are hard to find. The SD9VE with the 16 round mags start at around $325.

My advice is go ahead and buy with the 10 round mags(probably gonna need um) and purchase the 16's as extras. My lgs has blister packages of 16's in stock. My SD( came with the two 10 rounders, I purchased extra 16's to add to kit.

Mags can be expensive. Don't buy a pistol with 10 Rd ones with the intention of buying 16 rounders.

See my thread on this page where they were on sale. The cheapest I've seen the SD is $299. If you can get one local for $325 it's still a good deal if no one local does cheap transfers

I found one locally with two 16 round mags for $319... I called the gun shop and had them hold it for me. I went there after work and picked it up. I was ready to order one online but I took one more look locally. I'm glad I did!!!
