Default S&W SD9 VE broke

For the life of me, I could not find the proper name of this part. But I bought this thing a week ago or so, besides the typical sight issue, it's been great.
Went shooting with a couple vets today and they even had issues with the sights. When I got home and went to clean my gun, I noticed a notch missing from the black tab behind the ejector port. No idea what it's called. But it's busted. Any help labeling it?

Are you referring to the extractor? They can sometimes get broken/chipped by dropping the slide on a chambered round (i.e, singly feeding cartridges into the chamber, then dropping the slide). This is primarily a problem with the 1911, or other pistols with internal extractors, but isn't unknown on pistols with external extractors like the SD9. When a round is fed from the magazine, the extractor hook comes up under the cartridge rim as the slide goes forward...the slide does not snap over the rim as it's forced to do when dropped on a round sitting in the chamber. This is one way you can potentially have problems. Just FYI in case you didn't know this.

S&W or a competent gunsmith can fix it.

I believe you and I are taking about the same part. The part shows up the in picture looking just like a black line. After a couple cleanings, I can imagine how the part functions by looking at it after your reply.
There is now a chunk missing out of the front corner if it, where it rounds into the slide.
Will have to wait till tomorrow to call S&W to get information on sending it in. Just wanted to get a label on the part to be more helpful when I'm on the phone.
side note, I never single load into the chamber. Always let the mag feed it.

Can't see the chip, even after enhancing your photo. In any case, S&W will take care of anything that broke. I suspect they won't let you install a new extractor yourself since some springs and other pieces are involved in holding it in.

Good luck and keep us up to date.

The extractor has a hook or "notch" on it to capture the shell cases rim for extraction from the chamber. It's suppose to look that way.

With no offense intended, as far as the sights go, I'd be willing to bet a bottle of you favorite beverage that it's pilot error as in "jerking the trigger".

None taken. First pistol so I wouldn't object to that assumption at all.

Default update

Ok, so I had a chance to call S&W. Have a prepaid FedEx label to return gun to get reworked/repaired.
Painless phone call. Very please with Customer Service.
Had a chance to take a picture of my actual gun to show damaged part for your viewing pleasure.
