Default Need help with SW40

Put my new springs in my SW40VE: a guide rod assembly and magazine springs. I decided to load up the mags and see of they would extract. The first round never did and there were problems after that with each mag. I should add that it was having problems before. Will this translate to real shooting?

Second, how hard is it to replace the extractor? I tried to find a youtube video on it with no luck. Please remember, I am not mechanically inclined. I do have a son that can help if it's pretty involved.

Didn't pop up immediately but Apex Tactical has at least one video on YouTube that includes extractor removal incidental to another product.

They also sell some sort of enhanced extractor, so have a look at their website. Also, someone will post a link before the day is out . . . .

Thanks for reply. I will take a look. No other responses though, I guess no one is fooling with the Sigma anymore. Smith and Wesson won't sell me one. Said I'd have to send it in, but I don't really want to do that yet. Not sure either whether it would be on my dime or theirs.

Smith and Wesson is gonna fix it on their dime after I told them what it was doing. Hopefully this will take care of the problem as I like the pistol.

Just saw this.

Started carrying my SW40VE again after retrieving it from the AZ house. Was going to suggest sending to S&W for service but you've done that. Every time I've ever dealt with S&W they've been very accommodating and have never charged me for either parts or service when I send the weapon back to them for work.

Thanks, that's encouraging to hear. They didn't balk a bit with me either as I told them right up front that I had just bought it used. They said no problem, would you like us to email you a label to send it in? That's CS that is hard to beat.

Default springs?

Are the parts you used stock?

S&W will repair your gun but expect it to be returned to stock.

Best put your stock parts back in before returning it.

Good Luck

Yeah, I put my original guide rod back in and they told me not to even send a magazine, which has the 5% op springs. The other spring I replaced shouldn't even come into play, I don't think, since they are replacing the extractor. If they do find it and return it to stock, will they send back the spring they replace?

They'll likely toss any parts they replace after inspection. If you want it returned, you may want to enclose a note with the gun, but don't be surprised if they don't.

No big deal if they don't, but I don't see how they will know with this spring unless they take the gun apart.

Out of curiosity, how long should I wait before checking on their progress on fixing my pistol? They did send me a RMA number and said to call in if I had any questions. It's been a week exactly. I thought I would give them two weeks and than call.

No need to call. Just got an email and it will be delivered on Thursday. Not bad at all.

Got my SW40VE back with a new extractor compliments of Smith and Wesson. They didn't notice my replaced spring, nor that the pigtail spring had been removed. I didn't think they would. So I still have the great trigger pull. At least great for a Sigma.
The big test is tomorrow when I go shoot it. Oh, and I did get a new GRA free of charge as well. They also polished the barrel and chamber.

In case anyone is interested, which isn't likely since I have been the only one posting on the thread lately, Smith and Wesson did a great job fixing my SW40VE. I finally shot it and shot it and shot it today and it didn't miss a beat. Handled hot ammo, cheapo, and everything in between. It now will have a place on my nightstand. I can't thank Smith and Wesson enough for the professional way they treated me even though I bought the pistol used. Their service is one of the main reasons I keep buying their products. I know others have had problems with them, but I never have. Anyway, now I have a great .40 Smith for next to nothing.

Good to see you have it back. It is agonizing to have a gun gone for repair. Hope my SD holds up, I really liked my SW9, I would have kept it if I was the original owner and it was under warranty. S&W would not replace the sear for free and $50 for a new one from an outside source just made no sense when $80 and the SW got me a new SD9VE.

Sorry Bronc, I'd been following the thread but I haven't been unable to get over here for a couple weeks.

Glad you have it back and it's doing well for you. S&W service is second to none, IMO. The polish job was a nice surprise, I bet. I would like to do a trigger job on mine as well, to cure its really long pull. Been carrying it for a month or so since I returned from AZ, may go back to my M&P for awhile and kinda rotate them.

I keep my Mak at the bedside.
