SD9VE and Southpaws
Being a lefty, I'm used to having to adapt to whatever firearm I'm shooting at the time. I'm an old retired band director and have been shooting for many years from the wrong side, reloading and casting bullets, etc. so I'm not new to the game. I do have a couple of questions for you fellow lefties...I just acquired a like-new (the previous owner's wife told him to ditch the gun before he'd put more than a couple mags through it) 9VE today and would like the mag. release on the right side, as well as the slide release. As stated, I'm a totally new owner... I know guns but am learning this one. I assume that since the VEs are budget guns, you can't swap these out-I see no locking slot cut on the other side of the mags, no slide release cut on the frame's R side, etc. Help me out here-anyone have any ideas about these things, plus info on holsters? (I could Google holsters-I prefer guys who've used certain models and like/don't like 'em). We lefties are like the shooting family's foster stepchildren, last in line for improvements, gadgets, ease of use, etc., it seems.
Any thoughts, fellow southpaws?

As a fellow lefty who carries and uses Glock....use it as it is or buy something else. You can't make that gun ambidextrous. Not unless you're willing to sink hundreds of dollars. The slide can be cut, probably cheap but the release mechanism is going to have to be a one off. Same with the mag. The slide release is a slide STOP. Sling shoot the slide to release. Mags can be dropped with your middle finger without breaking your grip.

Lefty Solutions
Yup, I agree...I was just curious how many other lefties used an SD9. Being an old 1911 guy (before ambi safeties were so prevalent), I got used to dropping the mag with my middle finger. And, you are right...on some guns, it IS a slide release but due to the way it's built on this gun (and many others), it's just a stop. The lever is not built up at all, in order to keep the gun slim I assume. Anyway, I was just curious. (I did read on another forum that the SD9 mag release can be made ambi by reversing the spring but that sure doesn't cut another slot in the mag itself on the other side! No way you can switch it). Thanks for the reply!

I'm a cross dominant shooter. I'm right handed, but left eye is dominant. I had to teach my self how to shoot left. Took awhile, but I ended up pretty good.
I originally started with an M&P40. Moved over the mag release to the right side and all was good.
With my SD40VE, I now had to teach myself how to effectively use/manipulate that pistol. So now my M&P40, mag release is back on the left side to keep everything consistent.
I did notice that the M&P & SD slide release are very similar in construction. I believe if the right portion of the M&P side release is removed and spot welded onto the SD slide release, it will work. I have not had the time to experiment with it, but I will when I get around to it.
Google up some pics and share your thoughts.

Ambi Slide Release
Yeah, I think that would work except for the slide-no relief cut on its right side like on the left. Not sure if I want to go to all the trouble and $$ to make it a lefty. I'm pretty good at using the controls as given; I was just curious if any other lefties out there had issues. It works ok for me.
I am R-eye dominant but shoot left handed-just like you getting used to your situation, I have done so, too. Been shooting this way since my first you'll-shoot-your-eye-out-kid BB gun...am now past 60 so I guess it works OK! (At least the deer I've killed over the years would think so)...
Literally dodged a bullet today-was shooting some of my loads and evidently one missed the crimp die-had a no-go on the trigger, racked the slide and saw loose powder. Primer pushed the bullet into the barrel, so I took it apart and knocked it out. Guess that's ONE way to slug a barrel! It helps, being a bit cautious with my loads. That was the only problem. The trigger is smoothing out a bit, too. Anyone else have a story, right OR left-handed?

I'm a fellow lefty and on my sd9ve I use my index finger to release the mag still working on the slide stop. But all in all it is a nice handgun I've put 200+ rounds through it and it has worked awesome. The more you get use to the sdve the better it gets.
