I'm buying my son a gun for house defense. I'm deciding between the SD9VE and Taurus PT111 Millennium Gen 2. I have the SD9VE and it's a great gun, but reviews on the Taurus are good also. The Taurus is about $80 less. Any info on the PT111? Am I nuts to even consider the price difference?

Before thinking too much, make sure you can find the Taurus. A local gun shop in my area was talking about there being a rebate on them which brought them down to or even below $200 depending on where you buy it, and they said they hadn't been able to get the 9mm from any warehouse for several weeks and very few of the 40cal. I also looked online and everywhere was out of stock. I've read the good reviews on the Taurus too, but having said that and since the gun will be for defensive purposes, personally I would go with the S&W

The PT111 mel g2 is a nice gun and not only a rebate on it now, but a free membership in NRA to boot.

That being said, my first one had a big problem. The trigger bar kept popping out of place. I sent it back. Got it back in a couple weeks. 2 shots in the trigger bar popped out. Sent it back, 2 weeks later 10 shots in trigger bar popped out. Sent it back. They sent a whole new gun.

Have had not a problem with it with I don't know, 4, 500 rounds. I like it.

One thing to note, it is bogged down to death with safeties. Even California might be OK with it.

That is not what I want with my carry. I have my SD40VE for that.

But, I do like to shoot the PT

Taurus pistols seem to be a hit-or-miss proposition. If you already have a SD9VE, it should be a no-brainer. Keep it and use it for self-defense and don't take the chance on a Taurus.

I, also, agree about the safety situation with Dr Denby. No safety on a defense pistol is just right to me.

I recommend the SD9VE hands down. No ifs, ands, or buts. Great gun, especially for defensive purposes. Not to mention you can't beat S&W for Also right now I say stay away from Taurus. Within the last year they have been having problems with their autos. I found that out the hard way. They customer service blows.

I had the Taurus 24/7 .40 S&W G2 and it was working fine for about 300 rnds, then all of the sudden started failing to feed and extract alot so I sold it and got the SD40VE in its place and that gun has performed perfectly so far with alot more rnds through it. Also Taurus just had a huge recall, make sure that pt111 G2 is not on it, I think the G2's may not be, but I'd make sure. I'd go with the S&W SD Series instead of Taurus myself. I keep my SD9VE by my bedside ready to go as a home defense gun but I carry a Glock G19 Gen 4 on me when out and about, just my preference. My Glock G22 .40 is two steps away ready to go in my closet right next to the S&W SD40VE.

Good choice.

The SD9VE is an underrated pistol. Judging the pistol via its specs, price tag, and dry fire, I wouldn't want one. Got it in my hands for some live fire, and the pistol performs better than its price point alludes.

I have owned a PT111 G2, but sold it. I probably would have kept it but I just don't want to chance having to deal with Taurus if there is a problem. Their service is hit or miss, with some experiencing months long waits for their guns to be returned. Plus, Taurus won't pay for shipping after a certain period of time (I think it may be 90 days.)

Not only is the SD9VE a good, reliable pistol but S&W service is top notch, fast, and they pay for shipping.

I would take the Smith any day, some swear by Taurus, but usually only the higher end models. If my life depended on it and those were my only two choices, I think that the Smith would be more reliable particularly in the hands off a less experienced shooter.

Didn't see the all-black option prior to purchasing the two-tone, but it looks pretty tough.

I have both Taurus and S&W (among others) and the gun snobs get on you for having a Taurus and don't with the S&W.

I had mine cerakoted in graphite black and the other in coyote tan. I didn't like the factory 2 tone.

I've owned several Taurus guns, and none now. It's not a "snob" issue with me...I really like several of the Taurus designs, like the PT 111 Millennium G2, for example...but I just don't want to own guns made by companies with ****** service. While I have only had one serious issue with a Taurus gun, I don't want to chance the hit-or-miss service, of which there are many, many accounts of multiple trips for repair, and waits of several months for the repairs.

I will stick with companies that do have excellent customer service, like S&W, Ruger, and Springfield Armory. I'd rather own a Hi-Point than a Taurus...many people make fun of Hi-Points, and I admit they aren't BBQ guns, but they do work and Hi-Point service is excellent. I watched a video last night where a guy did a torture test including dragging the gun behind his truck down a dirt road until it would no longer work. He called HP, told them what he had done, and they said to send it in. They rebuilt it and returned it to him at no charge.

All my firearms-handguns, rifles and shotguns all have "Made in USA" on them. I've shot some of the other guns available and some are pretty nice, but S&W and Ruger are mighty hard to beat; so that's
where I stay. I have both the SD9VE and SD40VE, along with an assortment of M&P's. No need for me (personally) to look any further :-)
