Unhappy SD9VE Field Strip Issues

Hello there,

I purchased a SD9VE close to a year ago. I had some reservations about this particular pistol from previous research I had done, however I decided to bite the bullet and purchase the firearm. One of the main complaints that I saw many owners having was the horrendous weight of the trigger pull, and not surprisingly I found myself complaining about the same thing. After doing some more research on the web, I discovered there were a few different trigger kits that included a new trigger assembly which, once installed, reduced the trigger pull weight substantially.

So, long story short, I purchased one of the kits and attempted to install the new trigger assembly (and from what I've read, thus voiding my factory warranty.) It took me roughly 1.5 hours to install, with the hardest part being the re-assembly of the new trigger assembly. After everything seemed to be in order I put the slide back onto the pistol frame, lined it up, and pulled it back to lock it into place aaaannnnnddd oh *****, something doesn't feel right...

I try to field strip the pistol immediately and see that it has become "stuck" on something inside. In other words, I can pull the slide all the way back, it will stay locked back as it normally would without any ammunition in the pistol, and it will return to the normal "resting" position. However, to field strip a pistol, the slide must be able to freely move forward, which it does not. The pistol moves about 1/8" forward before getting "stuck" on something internally.

Since I'm about 99% sure that I've voided the warranty, I figured that taking it to a local gunsmith would most likely be the cheaper option. But I wanted to first create an account on the forums and see if I could get any opinions from some more experienced users. I have messed with this pistol for hours on end attempting to get the slide free again, but I've had no luck.

I guess my first question is, do you guys think that it's possible to get this gun apart again? Which kind of leads into my second question, if it is possible, do you think it's worth it? Most of the local gun smiths in my area charge $50-$75 per hour. For the unaware, this pistol is available for under $300, so my concern is that even if a gunsmith looks at it and messes around with it for 3-4 hours, and is unable to fix it, I've essentially wasted the same amount of money trying to fix the pistol as it would have taken to just buy a new one.

Any thoughts/advice/recommendations are extremely welcomed.

By the way I'm located in Houston, Tx.

Thanks guys

I guess you are not a qualified S&W armorer or gunsmith. So I have to ask why would you take it into you own hands to work on a great pistol like the SD9VE?

There's nothing fundamentally different from an entry level handgun like the SD9VE versus any other entry level handgun, so I'm not sure that I understand your question.

Modifying just about any handgun by yourself will void your factory warranty, and I was well aware of that before starting the modification. Sometimes things work out, sometimes they don't. I'm seeking help for fixing a problem that I ran into, not really looking for a conversation on a different topic.

Some guys like to understand their firearms from the inside out, and want to be well aware on how to work on their firearms should issues arise down the road. Some guys would rather shell out $75/hr to a glorified gunsmith for a menial task such as installing a new trigger assembly. Different strokes for different folks.

Thanks!

Thought you were not looking for a conversation on a different topic.
,
None the less ,,,, did you see the offer from the kind poster above to help if you just look at your P M.
The only time my slide got stuck like this was because of the guide rod not being installed properly.
,
bite the bullet , horrendous weight of the trigger pull ?
,
I have to ask then why did you buy it ?

Have you pulled the trigger to release the slide? Is the take down lever installed back in the right position with the groove facing the grip of the gun, not the flat part of it or is it pulled all the way down enough to release the slide? I can't think of what else could be hanging the slide up during field stripping, if the trigger was installed right and everything else was put back in right other than the take down lever position or the trigger itself not releasing the slide. Are you trying to field strip it with the magazine in the gun? Remove it if so, I'm just throwing stuff out their to see if it helps you.

Someone has offered to help you clear the problem. Apparently he sent a private message of instructions. Did you follow them?

My own take on this is:

1. If it took you 1.5 hours to do the trigger install you may not have followed the video instructions.

2. I would never consider modifying a gun at the outset, you may have liked it just as built.

3. A similar problem has been discussed, more than once, on this forum. Try to find those posts.

I think he just forgot to update.

Last I heard, he was up and running again.
