There are numerous difference, but primarily the SD9VE is the next generation or emanation of the SW9VE. One could think of the SD9 as a merging of the enhanced Sigma design and the M&P. They use the same magazines (but not the same base plates) however the SD9 series has a more ergonomically enhanced frame, standard rail system, better slide milling, will accept M&P sights and has an improved trigger. There is nothing wrong the SW9VE, but the SD9VE was made to be a more marketable gun with less of the stigma associated with the SW9 series (aka Sigma).
