Default S&W SD9 Finger pain issue

I bought a SD9VE last year and notice every time I shot arround 50-100 rounds I end up with a painful trigger finger, almost feels like bruising on the very bottom of my trigger finger.
To also put this in perspective I am 6'6 and have large hands.

I never have this issue with my 1911's or my P08, I am wondering if this issue is specific to the SD9, all polymers or a combination of large hands and polymers.

I have shot a couple rounds though a glock and never experienced this but that could have been due to the low round count.

Does it have the stock trigger? if so and you don't mind spending $37 or so try the apex, the regular one is a two piece skinny thing while the apex is a solid, more akin to a Glock type of trigger.

It may or may not help.

Its has stock trigger.
I will look into the apex but if this is a know issue with the gun, I would prefer just to sell it.

For as much shooting as you do, IMHO, sell it and get a M&P PRO; half the trigger pull.

SD is an adequate defense gun, not a target gun.

Must be a large hand thing or a flaw on your specific trigger. I just put 200 rounds through mine today and then went home and did a handful of dry fires after cleaning. No pain. As for the continued bashing of the factory trigger weight, I have no issues making a decent ragged whole in paper at 10 yards or with making 8" steel plates ring at 25-30 yards.

I am starting to think the main problem is the curve at the bottom of the trigger, even when dry firing I can feel this starting to dig into my finger. When you compare it with photos of the glock trigger etc the SD9 has a circular profile where the glock etc is a slight curve.

Yeah, I can see that for some fingers. It does not affect me, but my fingers are not as large as yours are, I am sure. I am only 6'2" and 275ish.

Shot my SD today, then my buddy's G-19 Glock ! While I like the Glock trigger better (better mechanical advantage, IMHO), my SD trigger felt fine. It has smoothed up considerably since I started working w/ it at the range. I was told this would happen by the good folks here on the forum and it's true. It's STILL about 8#, but getting smoother w/ use. If I could find a reliable 'smith in my area (who hopefully has worked on SD's) I'd get it smoothed up even further. I have arthritis, so a smooth pull is something that's needed, not necessarily a "light" pull !! OTOH, if I was having that much trouble, I'd buy a G-19, they're great also !!! Good luck !!

The problem with issues like this is that everybody's hands are different, and what affects one user may not affect another. I briefly owned a .40 Glock 23 that would badly abrade my trigger finger as well, and I sold it because I couldn't take shooting a full box of ammo without it getting sore. My 9mm G19 also rubs my finger, but not nearly as bad and I can usually go at least 200 rounds before I'm ready to put it away. What a lot of folks don't realize is that polymer frames flex during recoil, and they'll sometimes abrade your finger while shooting even though they don't do so during dry-fire practice. You often don't know how a given firearm is going to feel in your hands while shooting unless you rent one out first, otherwise by the time you've bought one and tried it out on your own it might be too late. On more than one occasion I had the hots for a new gun but decided to try a rental first, and ended up glad I didn't waste my money buying one.

I was just thinking about this issue. I put 65 rounds through my brand new SD9VE over Memorial Day weekend and felt like the trigger guard was whacking the bottom of my trigger finger. I don't remember having the issue when I owned an SW9VE. So I was thinking two things:

1) Does the SD9VE have less room under the trigger guard than the SW9VE? The SW9VE has a gentle curve under trigger guard where the SD9VE looks like it has a more squared off trigger guard.

2) Do I need to be more conscientious in my grip? Perhaps I could be more conscious about where I position my finger before and after the shot.

I'm certainly not going to give up on the SD9VE. It had been a couple of years since I last went shooting and I'm thinking their may be something wrong with my grip or technique that I may need to work on. I definitely didn't have the issue back when I had an SW9VE. Very curious . . .

I don't think this is a 'known issue' with SD-VE pistols. I don't experience this problem, and I haven't seen a lot reported on it on this or other forums. That doesn't mean it isn't real -- at least one shooter (big_e_ca) is experiencing it.

My guess is that it is not the shape of the trigger as it touches the finger -- fingers can accommodate a lot of differently shaped objects -- but perhaps a vibration or pulse that is transmitted via the trigger when the round is fired or when the slide cycles. Recall that S&W puts a piece of cotton in the trigger return spring of SD's and M&Ps to dampen 'high speed oscillations' as that spring vibrates after a shot (back in the early days of the M&P, S&W had problems with the trigger return springs actually snapping from this high speed oscillation). So I am thinking this is something along those lines -- perhaps accentuated in the OP's pistol, or perhaps something he is configured to perceive more than most other people do.

The Apex trigger is a possible solution. Changing placement of the trigger finger might alleviate the problem too.

It might still be a technique thing. I was searching around on this and one common sense suggestion I ran across is to maintain a very tight grip on the pistol through the whole shot. I'm thinking pushing the right hand with the pistol more firmly into the palm of the supporting left hand. This may help control the muzzle flip that smacks the trigger guard into the trigger finger.

It makes sense to me. I switched from shooting a .22 and then mild .38 S&W and then graduated to 9mm during my last range session. I'm thinking I might not have had as good of a grip as needed. It's just a theory. But, next time I go shooting, I'll definitely try that and see if it makes a difference.

I have about 200 rounds on my new SD9VE, and that trigger does feel pretty hard to use.

If I really concentrate I'm pretty well right on target, but my normal shot is low. Every gun I have shot I have been low with, so obviously it is something I am doing wrong.

Overall I still really like the gun, just not to sure about the JERK behind the trigger.

No pain when I use my 9 but the 40 beats up my trigger finger very badly. I have resorted to using my foremost inner knuckle for longevity.
