Default S&W SD40VE

I took my gun to the range about a week or 2 after cleaning it and it jammed multiple times. I am a new gun owner and shooter. Could someone help me figure out what could have possibly caused it?

First; Welcome to the forum and I think you will find many knowledgeable shooters and gun advocates here! Most all will welcome you as a new shooter and try to help you with any gun related issues.

You don't give us much information. Is the gun new, or a used one? What kind of ammo were you using at the time the gun jammed? Did the RO (Range Officer) help you get the gun back to the unjammed and ready to shoot again state? If you have never shot a gun before, especially a large caliber.40S&W you may be " Limp wristing" it. " Limp wristing"is a phenomenon commonly encountered by semiautomatic pistol shooters, where the shooter's grip is not firm enough and the wrist is not held firm/straight enough to keep the frame of the firearm from traveling rearward while the bolt or slide of the pistol cycles.

Try to supply as much detail as you can so the readers and posters on this forum can help you! Again, Welcome from Illinois!

My sd40 is brand new, im using .40 fmj rounds. After reading your message maybe jammed is not the right term. The slide would move back and as it loads the chamber it gets stuck. I would remove the magazine. Pull the slide and free the round. I could free it myself and continue firing.

Failure to feed can be caused by
wimp ammo
wimp grip
improper cleaning/lube
changed/modified springs
sometimes, a defective gun

If you were in one of my classes, we could check it out; over the internet...well, hard to do. Any good range officers or instructors available?

The SD40VE is easy to initiate Failure to Feeds.

Usually, it is not necessary to drop the mag and pull the slide. As simple light tap on the back of the slide will generally cause the slide to return to battery and chamber the round. When that happens, it is most likely because you are "limp-wristing" the gun. i.e. not keeping your wrist tight and locked when firing.

If you are experiencing an issue where a tap on the back of the slide does not cause the round to chamber, and it is required to drop the mag and pull the slide back to eject the round, then it is most likely the ammo. My SD40VE was very finicky with different types of ammo. Perfecta and Winchester would just not chamber properly at all, but I had much better luck with Federal and PPU.
