The SD9VE was my first ever poly/striker fired pistol. I kept seeing/reading all the reviews, and when it went on sale at a LGS, I purchased it. Over 1,500 trouble free rounds and I still enjoy shooting it. Bought the SD40VE to keep it company.
When the poly/striker bug bit me, it bit HARD! I now have all 3 Shields and 3 FS M&Ps. I enjoy them all. IMO, the SDVE series pistols are the new Model 10 of our time. It is a no frills, get the job done pistol for the average shooter. Being Made in the USA and having a Life time warranty doesn't hurt either :-)

I was looking at a Glock 17, I like the looks and the way it feels in my hand. It's the only Glock I was interested in, none of the others fit my hand. My dealer told me he'd sell it to me but he thought I'd be just as happy with the SD. I've known Larry a long time and trust him. I took the two guns apart side by side, went home and did some reading and went back the next day to buy the SD9. Two weeks later I bought an SD40. Two more weeks later I bought an M&P Shield. I sold my other 3 pistols I kept in my rotation and now I just carry S&W.
Oh, and for the record I actually like the SD's better than the Shield. They fit in my hand better but the Shield is good for my wife and daughters to have around.

I got a Kahr CW9 for concealed carry and have become accustomed to its manual of arms. I had my father's Llama 9mm as a nightstand gun, but it wasn't very reliable. I got to searching for a replacement that mirrored the Kahr in everything but capacity. The SD9VE fit the bill, almost perfectly. I traded in the Llama + $30 and had a new S&W.
Kinda fitting, considering that my dad traded a S&W Chief's Special for the Llama thirty years ago.

I don't know much about these things yet but that sounds impressive.

It's impressive when you consider the will power that he has! I can't let it go that long...I have OCD. In fact, mine is so bad that I have to clean my gun each time I shoot it.

I should send my guns to you. Gun cleaning is like kryptonite to me. I I could get away with never ever cleaning them I would! Unfortunately that's not possible so I make a point of cleaning at least once a year

I know I'm reviving this thread, but I just purchased a SD9VE. I too have pistols that were surplus and reasonably priced when I bought them for HD use, a P6 for example, and now have increased to the point I wanted something less expensive for HD/truck gun use. The SD9VE reminds me of my M10 revolver, everything you need and no other frills.
I have several S&W revolvers and have had great experience with S&W service. Plus, after close to 35 years of gun ownership I wanted to try a poly framed striker fired pistol-except for a M&P 22 all my other handguns are steel or aluminum framed and hammer fired. (I know the M&P 22 actually has a concealed hammer but it is poly framed)
I've shot Glocks, but they don't fit me quite right. I'm not fond of the slab sided Ruger grips, the SD has a nice bit of palm swell that I like. While I prefer the grip and ergos of the full sized M&P, all of the comments about the generations of triggers make buying a used one ($ value) kind of iffy. So, with the rebates I thought I'd try a SD9VE. So far so good!

For me, it started with taking an interest in the mighty Sigma. I toiled over buying one until I was pushed over the edge by reading this: I believe this is a real value (S&W Sigma)
Without ever having shot one I purchased it. I immediately loved it's ergonomics, simplicity and reliability. I read countless, countless threads of Sigma bashing, mostly from snobs and cowboys who couldn't handle the trigger pull.
Then came the SD (the improved Sigma), bought one, really liked it.
Most recently I purchased the hi-viz SD from Academy and it's the best one yet. The trigger "seems" to be a touch lighter and the sights are amazing.
All this for a "great price" makes it a win for me. It's all personal preference, but I for one am happy as a lark with mine.
I still prefer revolvers, but the SD9 fills my semi auto needs quite nicely.

I have not owned a striker fired pistol or anything from S&W before this pistol. I had a Bersa Thunder 45 on layaway. (I was already having second thoughts about it when I picked it up) Once I got it, it was accurate, but the empty casings would always nail me in the forehead. Then the finish started flaking off. Wasn't impressed. Then I took the extractor out and the finish under it looked like it was flaking off too. So I had the thought that I would pick the flakes off with a toothpick (yea a wood one) you know, keep them from coming loose and messing things up. So I ended up sticking the tooth pick through the extractor port into the firing pin hole. At that point I put it back together and took it back to the Pawn Shop. Told him what happened and he told me to pick something else. I honestly never meant to buy this pistol. Or even something like it. But after handling it I got the appeal. And that is usually how the best relationships start. Getting something you never knew you wanted.

I was originally looking at a Glock 19 and did some research on the SD9ve. It basically came down to price. A Glock 19 at $500 (or higher) or a SD9ve on sale for $269. In addition I figured I couldn't go wrong with another S&W.

$238 with the rebate for me was a big factor. Just got the 9mm the other day, havent had a chance to go shoot yet but my opinion of this gun is excellent so far. I like how it feels, fits my hand, the weight and the quality of construction, more than likely will buy a few more in the coming month.

It was cheap (you get what you pay for) and turned into a project to improve it's trigger and function. Once completed, I'll probably gift it to my Grandson.

Really!? that's surprising. I installed a $20.95 DIY Apex trigger kit - which took under 30 minutes. My M&P's standard trigger was actually worst than the sd9 - after a Apex kit was installed in the M&P it made all the difference in the world.
Cheers!

Function and improvement is largely dependent on the original pistols manufactured tolerances AND MANY can be very different.

It's a Smith & Wesson. 6 1/2 years ago it was the right gun at the right time for the right price.
