Greetings one and all. Well, I finally did it. I am the proud owner of a S&W SD40VE. I've only fired 75 rounds and I've noticed a problem. Not with the gun. OMG it's fantastic. It's my eyes. Now, bear with me for a moment.

Due to an uncorrectable vision issue, I have difficulty lining up the stock sights with the target. Short version...with my bi-focal safety glasses on, if the sight dots are clear the target is blurry. So, of course, if the target is clear the sights are blurry. I can hit the target, no doubt, but accuracy is guess-work. Here comes my question...

Is there a way to make a Pursuit x1 Mini Reflex sight mount to the SD40? If not, any affordable red-dot sight recommendations?

I don't know about mounting a red dot to SD slide, but can offer you some reassuring news, regarding your vision: Everyone else has the same uncorrectable vision issue.

You can't focus on rear sight, front sight, and target, simultaneously.

The method that seems to work best is to align sights on target with some back & forth focus, ending with final focus on front sight post (with rear sight and target 'visible' but fuzzy) as you press trigger to release.

I've been wearing "computer glasses" (focus near front sight) and shooting fuzzy targets for many years, in competition.
If I'm not wearing those glasses, I've learned to shoot with whichever pair I'm searing in a defense situation. Defense shooting is not like bullseye shooting, so ultimate precision is not the goal.
Your situation with your eyes is not even unusual.

Oh, and to answer your question about the hardware, no the SD is not an easy one to put optics on it. S&W makes an optic ready CORE M&P that is purpose made for that.

Yes, you can mount a cantilever pistol red dot/scope mount on the SD models.

Go to Amazon and type in: pistol scope mount. Next look for a model mount that wraps around and also uses the gun's lazer/light mount method of attachment on the underside.

The mounts are more/less universal in nature, but some ride higher than others, so check out the measurement specs to be sure you get one that not only clears the slide, but the front sight, as it also slides back.

Keep mount low, as the scope will ride fairly tall. Use a Micro Red Dot for these as great shooting option.

I recommend Primary Arms or HoloSun. Military like durability, small, with pricing less than $200 for different selection of models to choose from. I suppose Bushnell TRS25 could work also if you have poorman's budget like most of us do.
